My first real job was "gas jockey" at the Sunoco Station in the middle of Vandalia. I worked full time during the summer. Got paid $1 an hour for 40 hrs. I spent my entire, very FIRST check on a bicycle for my little brother, from Western Auto. It was for his birthday. Oh, I forgot, I was 13, and had just graduated Junior High (8th grade).

Lonebear, I too was a gas jockey in Vandalia. It was at Estill's Sohio on the southeast corner of 40 and 75. My best friend worked at the Pure station next to the carryout. I remember that gas was about 25 cents a gallon.

Yeah jfox68, cheapest I ever bought was 22.9 cents a gallon. I remember filling up those big ole Caddy's with the 30 gallon tanks for less than $8! My next job I had was at the Aullwood Children's Farm out on Frederick, part time after school, I was in charge of the animals, liked it a lot better.

My first real job was at S.S. Kresge Co. variety store downtown Dayton. Started working there when I was 16, took bus downtown to work and worked part-time while I went to school full time. I really enjoyed working in the toy department during christmas and also worked in the candy department. Back then downtown Dayton was thriving. Really miss that and the variety stores also.

Two days after graduating from high school, I went to work in a factory in Eaton. I think the pay was $1.80 per hour. I didn't like it much so five monthe later I joined the USAF. This was in 1959.

Right after graduating from high school in 1963, I went to work as a waitress at the Frisch's on Woodman just north of Patterson Road. I made .65 per hour and tips averaged $5.00 a day. I had to take the bus and transfer downtown for another and the whole thing was quite an education. Did that for about 2 months before heading out to California for the first time and found out how cool I'm not.

JBlair:
That Frisch's stopped being affiliated with the Big Boy 'company store' four or five years ago, before finally selling out. I can't remember the name it changed to, (Marx(?) or something similar) but they were not allowed to use Frisch's sauce on 'their' Big Boys. Also, until they closed they purchased their ground beef from East Dayton Meats at Smithville and RT35. I knew a waitress that worked the drive-thru window.

I picked up bottles (bottleboy) at the Thunderbowl in Englewood when I was 13 years old. Received free bowling at first instead of being paid, then worked myself ALL the way up to $1.10 per hour before long. (I think it was cheaper to pay me rather than let me bowl for free).

Telephone soliciting. Navy mothers' club (I think). Unknown office somewhere downtown as I recall, like maybe in the Arcade. The job was found by a friend of mine and she wanted someone she knew in the office with her. Fifty cents an hour. 1952. Lasted the summer.
When I ran across a name I recognized on the calling list, I gave a fake name. Don't even remember what it was now, but it was a nice name.

Working for NCR in Branch Accounting in 1960 was my 1st real job. I suppose I was put there because I failed "manual dexterity" testing (!). My boss was William Hahn, and he had a brass spittoon beneath his desk (again !). He was such a nice man, so "old school"..wore suspenders. It was the start of the computer age, and the summer I worked there (5th or 7th floor, I believe) it was so hot, and when they built a glassed in area for the new (and huge) computers, they air conditioned the room. So while the rest of ourselves had fans to cool us, the girls selected for that area wore sweaters and waved at us! I made so many friends within those few months..wish I still had contact with them. We had an hour for lunch, ran down thru the tunnels to get lunch and then back up to the Auditorium for the free movies. They had a post office and a mini-hospital there as well. My father and uncle both worked there and were both long time employees, later retiring from NCR. I am so proud that I was a (very small) part of it, and was saddened to hear that NCR left Dayton. It was a very special time in my life.

I worked for Van Dyne & Crotty off Linden Ave taking shop rags out of the washers and putting them in the dryers. That room must have stayed at about 95 degrees. Made $1.10 an hour. Next summer started playing Keyboard ( Wurlitzer Electronic Piano with Marv & Betty & The Triumps. I made more money in a week than I made all summer at Van Dyne Crotty, and a heck of a lot more fun.

After my three years delivering the Journal Herald in Riverdale, at 13 years old I worked at the Famous Clothing Co. in Belmont as a stock clerk/janitor. It helped that my father was manager, but he sure didn't cut me any slack. lol

Painted parking lots, working for a good friend of my Dad's. Started at age 13, by time to go to college, had saved most of the money I needed for my first two years and travelled to most every state east of the Mississippi in the process.
