Seems like Thurgood Marshall was a U.S. Supreme Court Justice -- first black man or maybe Chief Justice.

And, the 64 silver dollars were the top prize in an old time radio show.

But, what was the tobacco company settlement about?

(And, that's all I know.)

@wabash73 - my uncle graduated from Colonel White in 1971. I'm sure you remember the riot that year.

As far as school closings, the first one to close was either Wilbur Wright or Roosevelt. Not sure which one closed first but those were the first 2 that closed. Beyond that I'm not sure, but it seems like Roth was the next one to shut down. I also joined the AF in 1971 and came back to Dayton in 1975, then transplanted to Florida in 1981.

jack1953 - Yes I was there for the 1971 riot and all the other riots during my 4 yrs (69-73) at CW. It was a tough and dangerous time to be a student at CW. I don't think students at other HS in the area really knew what we were going thru. Thank God for sports and a great set of friends or I probably wouldn't have graduated.

Roosevelt closed in the mid-1970s. I think a lot of the others closed in the early 80s: Roth, Wilbur Wright, Kiser, and Fairview. I think Colonel White closed just after the turn of the millenium.

historybuff-

Nineteen sixty-four was the last year that the U.S. Mint used silver for its coins. Therefore, after that, a "silver dollar" was no longer actually silver.

And yes, Thurgood Marshall was the first black (or African-American) Supreme Court justice- he was not chief justice, though.

Hey, and I wasn't even born until 1973. Heh heh...

Wasn't Colonel White High School renamed Thurgood Marshall High School? Or is it an entirely different building now?

Colonel White HS was torn down and a new building was built. They named that new building Thurgood Marshall - so two different things. And I know that Kiser HS was converted to a junior high in the 80's (83 maybe?) because I went there for grades 7-8-9. That building was torn down and rebuilt as the Kiser Challenger Learning Center (PK-8).

I went to Colonel White for grades 10-11-12.
