I came to Dayton in 1971 and can remember a lot. These Dayton area stores have come and gone.

Goldman's, Rink's, Ontario Stores, Gold Circle, Hill's Department Store (there was 1 in Springfield), Service Merchandise, Sears in Downtown Dayton.
PK Lumber, Carter Lumber (I think there's still 1 left in Beaver Creek), Furrow's Hardware, Builder's Square, Wagner Wood, Contractor's Warehouse on Woodman Dr.
Spectrum Audio (741 S., near the Dayton Mall), Camelot Music, National Record Mart (Dayton Mall).
Fazio's, Stump's Groceries, Fulmer's (in Fairborn, the 1 in New Carlisle is still open).
SS Kresge's, Woolworth's, WT Grant, Rikes, McCrory's in Fairborn.
Hook's Drug Stores, Rite-Aid Pharmacy, Grey's Drug Store, Rexall Drugs

Restaurants
Church's Fried Chicken (there used to be 2 of these in Fairborn), Roy Rogers Roast Beef (I really miss them, their real roast beef sandwiches were great), Woody's Market in West Carrollton, Friendly's Ice Cream (Fairborn), Lum's (in Fairborn, it burned to the ground)
Ponderosa-they used to be all over the place. The one at Airway and Woodman is the only 1 left. Another at Chambersburg near Brandt in HH., N. Broad in Fairborn, Woodman & Dorothy Lane
ChiChi's -There was 1 on Col. Glenn and Poe Avenue, The Airway Inn (burned to the ground), Tuty's Inn (the original burned to the ground),
Sacksteder's Cafeteria, Bonanza (they were all over the place too) Perkins at Airway & Woodman, Jed's Steakhouse (there were around 6 of them, their BBQ chicken was great),
Burbank's Bar-B-Q (Cincinnati based, but there was 1 on Col. Glenn in the mid 90's),
Fish & Chips places, H. Salt, Arthur Treacher's, Long John Silver (The only real survivors), London Bobby
D'Jack's Mexican Food on Kauffman Ave. in Fairborn.

State Liquor Stores, Carlin Audio on Salem Ave. (Don't know if the 1 on Dorothy Lane is still open), Lafayette Radio, (S. Dixie & Dorothy Lane).

Car Dealers
Stenger's Ford (I bought a Ford Torino from them in '72, it was the worst car I ever owned. The dealership was nothing to write home about either.), Morningstar Chrysler in Fairborn. (The owner, Jim Morningstar is still around and a member of our model airplane club)

Robert Hall Clothes on Col. Glenn, Western Auto, Nationwise Auto Parts, Brandt Sales, Metropolitan Shops, Sohio gas stations, Clark stations, Fotomat, Donenfeld's, Buddy's Carpet Stores, Concord City.

There's a chicken joint in Huber that was first "Famous Recipe" ("Worth crowin' about! was the motto) that later became a Church's (or was it the other way around?) Now it's a Lee's Fried chicken.

There was still a Clark station in Huber last time I was in town (2008). It is (was?) on Troy Pike.

I do like the way Ohio has "privatized" the State Stores. I wish Governor McDonnell here in Virginia would come to Dayton to see how Ohio does it and avoids a ramshckle hovel on every darn corner with shady characters hanging out.

Funny, I was just on Troy Pike an hour ago. 2 Clark Stations in Fairborn are now gone. There was another on Col. Glenn, it's gone too. The State Stores were all Political Patronage, it was who you knew that determined if you got a franchise. Many of the grocery stores (Kroger's and the like) now have a liquor department. I have seen some smaller stores which sell booze too.

Here's some more...

Chobing Inn and Koreo Inn, both in Fairborn, (Koreo Inn closed after failing a health inspection and the story got into the newspaper)
Totenko at 741 & 725 (likewise closed after failing a high profile health inspection)
Teddy's Restaurant at the Page Manor Plaza (a real greasy spoon place)
Shades of Jade on Col. Glenn, now occuppied by El Rancho Grande.
Rax Roast Beef (There was 1 in Fairborn during the 80's)
Vegas Club in HH (I think that was the name, on Brandt Pike during the early 70's. The cops were constantly being called to the place. I used to live nearby when 1 night a couple of drunk hillbillies who had just been thrown out, came back and torched it. It burned to the ground.)
Shooters, another DJ nightclub on 48 South, just north of where 675 crosses it. From the 1980's.
The Peasant Stock and BR Scotese's

Big Lots is still around. There's one on Salem in the strip mall where Best Buy is.
I loved Rax roast beef and thought it was better than Arbys. There was a Rax in Harrison Township at the corner of Main and Turner. My favorite fish and chips was H. Salt. I wish some of these places were still around.

One of my favorite restraunts was the Tall Timbers on Troy Pike(?).
I know it burned down, but I don't remember when. Haven't been there for a while. Has anything been built on that spot?

Man - I hadn't thought about Service Merchandise in years and we had one here in FL to.
I remember there being a great Gun Shop on N Main St probably at least a mile out past White Allen. It was on the right side of Main St on the S side of a corner.
Someone mentioned places on Col Glenn (Airways). There was a Frostop Rootbeer up where National came out, a Cassanos down near the Wright field gate, an Ice Cream shop in Page Manor Center.
In Fairborn there was Georges Gun Shop. It was in a little bldg in the back alley behind a barber shop. I think they moved back there because originally it was in the back of the barber shop behind a wooden wall. George had a large tree stump he would let people try shooting a pistol into. I wonder how many ears were lost in the barber shop?
We had a Throckmortons hardware near Spinning & Kemp that had one item on display and IBM punch cards above it. You took a card for what you wanted, gave them to someone at the back counter and a kid on rollerskates ran aroung gathering up your order. Thought that was pretty HIGH TECH.
Is the skating rink still behind the Beaver Bowl?
Ah, fond memories.

Here's some more:
Boston Market (Beavercreek & Bellbrook)
The Peerless Mill in Miamisburg. They rebuilt after a 2003 fire, but then went broke in '08.
Grindstone Charley's on S. Wilmington Pike.
Ryan's Steakhouses. They were pretty good, but began shutting down around 4 years ago. None left.
Traditions & Empire Restaurants at the corner of Dorothy Lane and County Line Rd. They were start-ups by Jerry Office, I think who also started the Ponderosa chain. They closed in the 90's and were replaced by a Chinese food place (China House). It also closed and the building torn down.
Mr Steak at the corner of Linden Ave & Woodman Dr. It became a Chinese buffet (Happy Palace) for a number of years, but then closed abruptly and the building was razed by the township.
The New England Deli in Fairborn, near Kauffman Ave & Dayton-Yellow Springs Road.
Nofsinger & Bashor Appliances, I think they were on Salem Ave in Dayton.
World Bazaar at the Dayton Mall. They had some interesting items.
Kay Bee Toys at the Dayton and Upper Valley Malls.
Roberd's Furniture & Appliances in West Carrollton, near Woody's. The chain was HQ'ed in Dayton, but became obsessed with opening stores in Atlanta to the point that it dragged the whole operation under.
La Cantina del Rio at Rte 48 & I-675. It caused a big stir because the neighbors complained about it's authentic stucco exterior and said it looked like a dump.
I mentioned Chi Chi's before, I think there was also 1 near 741 & 725.
Miami Valley Decorators on North Dixie Dr.
PanelTown on Linden Ave, recently closed.
JR's Carpet in Fairborn.
Brown Derby at the corner of Whipp and Bigger in Kettering.
Color Tile stores
Miami Valley Hardware I think on N. Main st.

Some more car dealerships:
Gene Young Toyota in Springfield. I bought a Toyota Starlet there in 1981.
Dick Osman Mazda also near 741 & 725. In the days of the 80's when Japanese cars were really in demand, I remember he made the news by not only charging full list price, he had the audacity to add up to $2,000 per vehicle as "Additional Dealer Profit". I can't imaging anyone so stupid as to cave in to sales pressure like that, but apparently there were some who did. However, I think he went bankrupt around 1988.

Joe,

When I was growing up in Fairborn, I got my hair cut at George's Barber Shop. I remember when he started the gun shop in the back. I was never there when anyone fired a gun, though.

PaulH and jfox68, a couple of years ago, I was taking some photos of what was left of Tall Timbers, trying my best to do it as quickly as possible before the police arrived. Just when I was about to finish, a Huber Heights officer rolled up onto the property. I walked over to him and informed him what I was doing. He told me that I was trespassing (as I already knew), but was very courteous and respectful. At the time, the building had been mostly boarded up and vandalized. During a one month stretch many years ago, I took three different women there for dinner (one date was all they could take from me). On the third one, the greeter told me matter-of-factly in front of the latest one, "Boy, you come in here every week with a different girl." That made a big impression.

Some great memories in this thread. I had moved from Dayton to Sidney around 1979. I actually worked at the sales leading Empire Restaurant at 75 & Rt47. Awesome w/e buffets and cheese soup to die for! Empire started in Celina by 2 gentleman, John Irmscher & Ed ?. They sold the chain to Jerry office who changed the name to Traditions and it slowly died. John now owns the CJ's Highmarks chain.
