I remember the pool on Frederick Road ... The worst burn I ever got I got at that pool. I remember it was really white (the sides of the pool and everything). I don't recall the name, but it was a public pool.

Millers Grove is no longer open. I don't recall when they closed.
The football HOF is worth the visit. I've been there twice.
I can't think of any kid friendly things for kids. You might visit the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. I think it has things for kids to do. It's what use to be called the Dayton Museum of Natural History or something like that.

Circling back to JeffN original post. I was born in Dayton and lived there for 25 years. In the 60’s and 70’s. I remember Parkmoor Chicken on Airway. My mom would take us there. The BHA commercials used to feature these kids who couldn’t sing. They were horrible! Don Wayne was the channel 7 news anchor. He was on every evening. I had a good friend who died in a car accident in 1972 and I can still remember Don Wayne saying on his broadcast. “A grinding car accident has taken then the life of a Beavercreek youth, Gary Knapp”. Steve Kirk… “Hi gang Kirkie here!” WONE-FM was changed to WTUE. Get it, W1 to W2. WTUE competed with WVUD, the University of Dayton radio station. I won a bunch of LPs from WVUN on contests. I still have them. I remember Hara arena, I saw a lot of concerts there. I saw Steppenwolf there and we used to go to Gems hockey games there.

Wanna go way back?? Who remembers Cassanos on Airway? Across form the Airway inn? The Air Force Museum when it was in Fairborn? Salt Walther? The Bargain Barn. Eastgate Ford when it was Dayton Xenia next to the Diary Queen?

Remember Sam's Bar & Grill on W. Fifth St? Lots of good music played there. The Hotmud Family band was a semi-regular feature - I remember they were playing the night Tom Severs pitched a perfect game for the Reds & they played the Red Legs Rag. Sam's was across the street from the current Spaghetti Factory and is now a parking lot.

msabo-Remember Patti Spitler at WVUD? She just retired from an Indianaoplis TV station (WISH) a couple of years back. She is almost completely deaf from Menniere's Disease of the inner ear. I saw Kirkie from WING just last year. He's living in FL and looks and sounds the same as he did on WING in the sixties(except his hair is pretty thin and white). Dan Pugh, who also worked at WVUD, has a gig now on ESPN. He and Dan Patrick are one and the same guy. (Daniel Patrick Pugh, get it?). The only concert I remember going to at Hara Arena was Kiss and Ted Nugent. I think I may have seen Foghat there, too. I mostly remember going there for Big Time Wrestling and the Carl Casper Car Shows. Kind of blows kids' minds today when I tell them I saw Ted Nugent in concert over thirty years ago! I remember working the infamous Who concert in Cincinnati where the kids were killed trying to crash the gates. I didn't find out about it until after the show. Not one of my favorite memories.

BTW-Who remembers the Witch's Tower and Suicide Hill at Community Golf Course in Kettering? How about The Shed on Brown Street where Bramble used to play? Anyone out there old enough to remember when Frank Zappa lived in Lebanon and worked on his parents' turkey farm?

JohnC - I never knew Dan Pugh was Dan Patrick. That's too funny. I remember recording albums off of WVUD onto cassette tape. They would play a whole album side and then send a beep so that you would know to flip your cassette. They were like an original Napster! Patti Spitler was on in the morning but I think she went on to WTUE. Was the Shed the open air bar?

I just remembered the name of one of the Spin-Kemp taverns. It was called Clancy's. Here's a factoid for you. The cook who burt down the Airway Inn (grease fire) was hired on as a cook at Clancy's. Also the wife of the owner of the Airway Inn, Peggy Stultz, was hired there as a waitress.

I think Kroger's was the original grocery located next to Clancy's. The other shopping center had a Super Duper long ago ... it was next to Jimbo's/McGuffey's, if I remember correctly.

I had friends who lived in the platt close to Stebbins High. I also had a bunch of friends who graduated from Beavercreek in 1978-1980.

I remember a market on Cornell back in the early 70's but don't remember the name. I lived just a few blocks from there but the area is a high crime area now. I won't even drive through it.

Bettmans is now located at the corner of Catalpa and Hillcrest in an old Rite-Aid store. I was surprised when they moved there as Ray's Pharmacy is just up the street at Catalpa and Fairview.

Anticolis is now located on North Main out past Shiloh Springs Road. I think it's called Anticolis Cafe now.

Does anyone remember when it seemed like there was a gas station on almost every corner?

In my neighborhood, a Sohio station stood at Salem and Otterbein. It's a Goodyear place now. There were two stations at Salem and Catalpa. One is a auto repair place and the other location is a vacant lot.

Where Bettmans is at Catalpa and Hillcrest use to be either a Marathon or Mobil station. The convenience store across the street use to be a Gulf station.

The beer dive-thru at Rays at Catalpa and Fairview use to be a Sohio station also.

There was also Hoot Gibson's station at the corner of Salem and Philadelphia. It's either a CVS or Walgreens now.

There are many more but I'd be writing a book if I pointed out all the locations. I think you get the idea.

I just posted some new photos of things found in Dayton in the 70s on the Nostalgia page at www.mhs77.com I have uncovered more photos which I will post this weekend (September 7 - 9).

There was a Howard Johnson's on Far Hills at Stroop in Kettering. We used to get fried clams there on Fridays after football games. They had 20 flavors of ice cream, unheard of in the days before Baskin Robbins.
The Country Kitchen on Dorothy Lane, mentioned in Life Magazine in the late '60s as one of the top 10 places in the U.S. to pick up a drag race.
Kettering pool on Stroop, and the roller rink he built next door, where he later started holding dances with bands.
The Kettering Village Inn.
Metropolitan clothing store, nice place.
Suicide Hill at the Community Golf Course. Great scary place to sled.
King Cole's downtown.
Dorothy Lane Market and Cal Main's one-man fight against blue laws.
Timothy's on Brown Street, which I think is still there, college bar where you didn't have to worry about fights.
WVUD when they were album rock and played a new album start to finish at 7 every night so you could tape it.
Gene By Golly Barry and his Sunday night dedication show, "Hello cats and kittens, no dime, no record time."
Jim Quinn on WING and the broadcast studio downtown on Ludlow, I think, where you could go watch him from the street.
RKO Theaters downtown with their old, ornate furniture and carpeting.

There was an IHOP next to the IGA. I like IHOP better than Bob Evans.

By the way, as far as TV shows go Phil Donahue started his show in Dayton. Dr. Creep's show was called Shock Theater and featured B horror flicks. For some reason the Voss Hoss comercial that was always a Shock Theater sponser was creepier to me than any movie that Dr. Crep played.

I also wonder if WKEF has tapes available of Clubhouse 22. That would be fun to see. I remember Malcom Mcloud's intro was (As best as I can type this): Manamenum, it's time for Malcolm, manamenum and his friends too, manamenum it's time for Malcolm, Malcolm, Malcolm and Clubhouse 22. The first time I ever heard the Beatles song Drive My Car was on Clubhouse 22. They broke for and came back from commercial breaks playing the Beep Beep and Beep Beep Yeah part. Joe Smith's theme on Clubhouse 22 was: Joe and Duff on Clubouse 22 - Joe and Duff on Clubouse 22 - Joe and Duff on Clubouse 22. Here's Joe!

I graduated from Stebbins in '71 I just recently stumbled on this sight, and all of you reminded of places that I haven't thought about in years.

Speaking of the Salem Mall, does anyone remember the Tijuana Lounge that was out by there? Trudi and the Hopple Street Exit from Cincy used to play out there on a fairly regular basis.

And please, please can someone name the signature burger served at Parkmoor???? For almost a year now, some friends and I wrack our brains a few minutes at a time to think of it.

What was the name of the record shop downtown at Fifth and Main or Third and Main. Was that Meyers? It was right on the corner.
Here's a really old one. Remember Joe Longstreth? He was Australian and hosted movies on one of the TV stations in the morning.
And Uncle Orie, the kiddie show.

Yes, it was Meyer's that had a record store at Third And Main Streets, underneath a jewelry store...what an odd combination of businesses! Do you remember Golden Rod Music on Main Street in the 70s? They sold records and marijuana paraphenalia...a combination which made much more sense in the 1970s!

Bill77, I had completely forgotten that silly Malcom And Duffy Show theme song! Now I can't get it out of my head!

The record store you're referring to was Mayors records, not Meyers. It was owned and operated by Mayors Jewelers. They had a shop right next door to their Dayton Mall Jewelry store and one in the Salem Mall, too, as I recall.

The Malcolm theme was actually a one time top 40 hit by the Dave Pell singers in the UK called "Ma Nah Ma Nah". How's that for useless trvia?

Speaking of Goldenrod, remember their competition The Forest Records and Tapes. It was run by Tom Weiser who now runs an internet oldies search site. I used to work for Camelot Music and walked into the Forest one day and found them selling bootleg vinyl. I picked up a red, white and blue pressing of the then unreleased Paul McCartney "Wings over America" and shipped it off to Capitol Records. As I remember, it only took a couple of days before they were shut down. They eventually re-opened. Another great place was Dingleberry's in Centerville. They went from hole in the wall to mega music and media store to hole in the wall in just a few short years. They were in business until just a couple of years ago.

Since the statute of limitations has expired, I will admit to drag racing out at the Country Kitchen. You could always find a good race there. I remember some good friends running for pinks-and losing out there. There was a very famous silver 1968 Corvette that used to hang out there driven by a gorgeous blonde. She had a very racy bumper sticker which I decline to go into detail about, but it was quite famous in the tri-state area. Classic urban legend stuff. I used to drive a big block Roadrunner and spent many a Saturday night at Country Kitchen, Parkmoor on Woodman Drive, Frisch's on Far Hills, and west River Road.

All you motorheads out there-remember Kilkare Speedway and the Saturday drags? Run whatcha brung!

BTW- the little snippets of famous songs like "Drive my Car" on Clubhouse 22 are called "bumper music". More useless trivia...

I'm from the south end of town and remember more stuff from the Kettering/Centerville area. Places like:

The Golden Nugget Pancake House
Hills and Dales shopping center
Pete Rose/Johnny Bench Lincoln Mercury
Witches Tower (across from Suicide Hill at Community Golf Course in Kettering)
Woody's Market in West Carrollton
Marions Pizza (the one by Dayton mall burned down)
Cassano's Pizza -"La prava in el gusto"
Putt Putt and Rolandia Miniature Golf in Kettering
The Burger Cart in Miamisburg
Charles Chips
Old Hickory on Brown Street (best ribs and Bar-b-que in Dayton)
NCR
Salt Walther upside down on the main straight at Indy-1973
Dayton Gems and Cincinnati Stingers Hockey
Baseball at Crosley Field in Cincy
Opening day at Riverfront Stadium in Cincy
The original and "real" WEBN fireworks show

Yup...but I'm not going to finish the quote here. Sounds like you spent a Friday night or two at the Country Kitchen. To the best of my knowledge, no one ever beat her, so the urban legend remains. As a rule, I never raced Vettes or Shelbys. You never stood a chance...

Street racing was a very big part of my youth growing up in Dayton. It seemed to be ingrained in the culture of teenagers from high schools all over the Dayton area in the 70's and early 80's.

I lost two good friends from school back in the early 80's when their Trans Am jumped a curb at over 100mph at the cemetery by Neil's Heritage House restaurant. Both were dead before the car came to a stop. I drove up on the accident minutes after it happened. I had another friend paralyzed when he was hit by a fishtailing car while marshalling illegal drag races on West River Road. He died a couple of years ago.

Not all my memories of growing up in Dayton are happy ones.

Does anyone remember from the 1960's a hippie store called the "Underground"? Also do you remember a place called the Loretta where girls stayed while attending school? They used to have dances there quite often. Also there was a couple of other nightclubs at Forest Park: The Cavern, and the Hollobaloo(Spelling). I saw Grand Funk Railroad, Ted Nugent and the McCoys (Rick Dehringer). I dated him for a while.

JeffN- Rick Derringer's real name is Rick Zehringer, and yes, he lived in the Beavercreek area for awhile. If I remember right, he went by Rick Zehrig in school. There were lots of great musicians from our area. Frank Zappa grew up on his parents' turkey farm out around Lebanon.

There are some other famous people from around Dayton, too. Kevin Yagher who did the makeup for the Nightmare on Elm Street films went to school with my wife in Centerville. Kevin's brother Jeff is a media icon for his talent in the area of sculpting. Google him if you want to learn more.

Someone mentioned in a previous post that Salt Walther was also from Dayton, although I think "infamous" is a better description than famous. His wife (at the time) Linda, used to groom our dog. David ("Salt") Walther is a textbook example of someone with way too much money getting in way over his head in a dangerous sport in which he had no talent. I remember A.J. Foyt referring to him as a "skidmark". I wonder if skidmark had the same meaning then as it does now?

Martin Sheen's brother, John Estevez, used to sell advertising in Dayton for channel 45 back when they went on the air in the mid 80's. He sold an ad package to us for our hobby shop. I think John lived in Centerville. Martin and his family (Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez) are from Dayton. Martin Sheen's real name is Emiliano Estevez.

Jeff - Rick did live in Beavercreek for a while and then moved to Union City Indiana. They was Rick Zehringer, his brother Randy played the drums, Randy Hobbs was a guitar player. There was another guy by the last name of Brennaman who also played back with him. I am aware of what Rick and Randy Hobbs did like playing the Edgar Winter band. Rick just played at the Fraze Pavilion this summer. I wasn't able to go.

An FYI. Orville Wright's home is available to be toured. They give tours twice a week. 2 on Wednesdays & 2 on Saturdays. The cost is about $20 and that gives you a tour of Deed's Park also. We were fortunate to be on the third tour and it is pretty neat. They allow pictures so take your cameras if you are interested in that sort of thing. I don't suppose anyone has a picture of the Parkmoor on Shroyer Rd or the one in Belmont. Also does anyone remember the hobby shop at the corner of Patterson Rd and Smithville or the department store at the other end of the building where Dot's Supermarket is now? Any other grads from Fairmont around 61? Thanks.

Oakday Swimming Pool
Kettering Swimming Pool
Phillip's swimming pool-club was torn down in August 07.
Remember Westward Ho on Brown Street roast beef dinner, salad with homemade French, Italian, 1000 Island or Blue Cheese (extra) dressing. Baked beans. Their delicious bean soup. Kosher pickles, hot-hot horse radish, cream pies.

I have a question about a "bit" Steve Kirk used to do rountinely while at WING in the 70s. It stated with an announcer saying somelike, "Coming down your street and up you block, it's Walter the friendly poet-philosopher." Walter would start by saying, "Hellooooooooo," and would then read a poem he'd written. He started out fairly serious, but by the time he got to last couple verses, he was laughing so hard he couldn't finish.

Anyone else remember this? I've often wondered if that was syndicated feature, or if Kirk did it locally. It certainly wasn't Kirk who did the voice for Walter.

By chance does anyone have an e-mail or postal address for Steve Kirk? Last I heard he was in Florida.

Thanks

I remember Walter on Kirkie's show. As I remember, he was another WING employee. I think Kirk wrote the scripts and this guy did the voiceover. I saw Kirkie a year ago this month. Not much had changed except what hair he had left was white. He's in FL now, but I don't have an address or e-mail. Sorry.

Does anyone remember Little Mickey from the TV 2 Saturday wrestling. He opened a club downtown near the Oregon District.

Does anyone remember concerts at Hara Arena? That was really the only place back then for concerts like Paul Revere and the Raiders, etc?

Also I went with a guy by the name of Dave Angi from Centerville and he had a group called Rush. They was another member by the name of Mike Sullivan. I believe Dave died from a horseback ride years ago. Help if anyone might known him.

I was born ('57) & raised in Kettering. I was on the Uncle Orie Show with my "Brownie" troop when very little. I also was on "Bowling For Dollars" in the early / mid '70's. So much for my 15 minutes of fame! I loved the pork tenderloin sandwiches from Sandy's in the '60's... they were thin & crisp with mustard, ketchup, & pickles. Never have found anything like them since.

I loved the old Sandy's too, Robyn. I always thought their burgers and fries were the best. We ate at the one on Airway Road until it changed over to Hardee's in the early 70s.

I saw a lot of concerts at Hara. Boston, Chicago, Jefferson Airplane. I had a friend killed on Shiloh Springs road walking home from a Rolling Stones concert in 1967.
I was also on the Uncle Orrie show. He was a shit as far as I can remember. I don't think he really liked kids. Nosey the Clown was pretty cool though.
I was also on a channel 2 show on Saturdy call 'Eager Beavers'. It was a baseball quiz show. I think 5 of us were chosen from around Dayton. I came in fifth. Oh well I got on TV.
