Maxed out - No, I don't go there. just Denny's and occasionally went to the 441/Southern Friday night meet (which I understand is defunct now). You went to Xenia? You probably went to school with my sister and brothers. They all went to Xenia and I was in Beavercreek (long story). Remember any JACK kids?

Rhino - yes, that was it. I remember when it opened.

Someone was talking about a Military Surplus Shop??? I remember one just East of the library on 3rd. Is that the one? Bought my first slalom ski there, lots of surplus stuff and fishing tackle.

I agree it is a shame that things disappear but it's everywhere. I guess our minds are the best place to relive all those good old days. I hadn't been back between about 1974 & 2002. Now THAT was a shock. Now I get back about every year for July 4th weekend and we always get in the car and drive around looking for old places. HA It amazes me how good my memory is at finding things or at least where they used to be.

Jeff N.......I try to get back to dayton a couple of times a year and I do take a few hours and drive around and see the old neighborhood, ect. What a disgrace what has happened. My old neighborhood if fenced off and you can only get in and out one way. I did go and visit Colonel White High School about a year before it closed. Brown School is history. I do take pictures everytime I go back.

It was across from the cement plant out on the East side of town, right? I DO remember there was a place called the Sugar Shack and I always told myself it was the place in the song. HA I didn't spend much time in Fairborn. All the car and club places were easier to get to in Kettering or Dayton. We had a cruise route - Country Kitchen then Frisches on Keowee then Parkmoor at Forest Park then back to Kettering. I remember a Frisches??? out past Langs in Fairborn and a Hasty Tasty out near there back in the 50's. There was also a Hasty Tasty in Bevercreek on Dayton Xenia Pike just West of the intersection near the bowling alley I think.

OK Folks. I posted more photos and content from Dayton in the 60s & 70s today on the Dayton Nostalgia Page at www.mhs77.com today. The page has links to sound clips, videos and photos of people, places and things from Dayton's past. The page has grown quite a bit in the past week. More content will be posted over the next week or so. Let me know what you remember and if you have suggestions, comments or content to add to the Dayton Nostalgia page. You may also want to see the Dayton List page on the same site, which contains a list put together from people on this board.

BruceF: Ok, game for one of the questions you asked, but it's only a guess...did Rick and the Raiders have to change their name because of Paul Revere and the Raiders? (Just a guess)! Haven't any idea what their name was before they became famous number one hitmakers..fill me in, please. Thanks, Dave

Just looking back...on Sunday mornings when we could pull in some TV channels from Cincinnati, does anyone remember the Skipper Ryle Show? As I recall, they also showed old Spanky and Our Gang movie shorts and some Three Stooges, and Shirley Temples...anyone else? nuck, nuck, nuck.....

(out of Miamisburg)...think that's the name, anyway. How about the "British Walkers" from Germantown? The "Intangible Tangerine" from Dayton? All locals, all probably better than those in the top 40's when we were kids...worked harder, being Ohioans...he he Was only joking about them being better...who am I to judge?

Never heard if anyone watched the 3 stooges on Sun mornings. That's where I learned the Curly Shuffle and made a name for myself with the hand snaps and nucks....gee youth was great.

SeeDavid - Rick and the Raiders was also called the Rick Z
combo. Randy Hobbs died in 1993. He was only 48 years old. I know that Rick was at the Fraze Pavilion last summer. Unfortunately I did not get to see him.

I have pictures taken of the McCoys when they played at Forest Park in Dayton. My girlfriend's cousin was real good friends with them and they played at several of her parties back in the 1960's in Springfield. I dated Rick for a short time. If anyone is interested in copies of these pictures, please email me.

OK, since we're on the subject of bands and clubs, I have been going nuts trying to remember the names of 2 nightclubs.

In the era of about 1968-1971, if you left the Diamond Club on Stanley and headed out towards Huber Heights, there was a large barn like club kind of out in the country on the left side of the road that was like one huge dance floor inside with the flashing white strobe light and they had projectors that covered the large walls with colored flowing bubbles, water, etc - Kind of like being inside a huge Lava Lamp.

Then around 1970 or so, they opened a place closer to Huber Heights that had a big Jacuzzi right inside the club. You could rent towels and a locker for your stuff then sit in the tub, drink and listen to the music.

Anyone remember these places?

Also, speaking or Wayne Cockran - remember the mini skirt contests at the Diamond Club?

Anyone remember the POETS and PRO POETS groups? (Piss On Everything, Tomorrow's Saturday)

Hey Terry, Do remember the Club on Old Troy Pike S. of Chambersburg Rd. in a strip shopping center..Hawaiian Theme..forget the name though...they had a big dance floor, but that pool was the first thing you saw when you went in.I remember they played lot's of Doobie Bros. songs and it was at th beginning of "disco", but not quite.

The other club you mentioned, no idea. Will try and remember the name of that Hawaiian place, though.

I remember going mushroom hunting with my dad....We were in search of the allusive morel mushroom (Sponge) and also the spike mushroom , aka (dog *****'s).. They were so good fried up in butter with a flour breading. I sure do miss the mushrooms living here in Florida. We would hunt them in the farm areas around Xenia and Spring Valley.

Allen, I remember paw-paws. I always thought they tasted like bananas. I was always told if you ate them when they were not ripe they would make you very sick.. There was also a song about them.."Picking up paw-paws put them in your pocket all the live long day."
Any of you hang out at John Bryan State Park, then going up to Young's Dairy for a shake?
Many years ago there used to be a black bear in a cage at Clifton Gorge. People would buy soft drinks and the bear would drink it all by holding the bottle up. Somebody gave the bear some alcohol and got the bear drunk, then they cut the chain to the cage and the drunken bear stumble off the cliffs and died.

to: Southparkerik,
I attended Van Cleve on W. Helena 1st & 2nd grades, 1951 - 1953. We lived in the 800 block of North Main, W side of st, just S of W Great Miami Blvd. At that time there was an Oldsmobile dealer approx where "Metro Door" now sits. (I am getting the names of these businesses off of Google Maps and as amazing as their website is, I can't be certain of accuracy.) Anyway, in the 1950's immediately N of them sat a concrete stucco tri-plex (approx where a bldg with the word "Audi" on it now sits). We walked to Van Cleve from there. I have not been back to the area in well over 50 years, but was "googling" and clearly saw Van Cleve Elem on the satellite map, but only a large empty lot when I went to "street View." I was having very little success finding any information until I saw your msg on this website. Can you direct me to where I might find additional info..... Thanks!!

Just got back from our annual July 4th weekend in Dayton. Had my Marions Pizza fix too. While we were there, they blew up the Stewart street bridge over the river. Soon to be replaced. I drove around a bit and noticed that it appears there isn't a boat ramp at Triangle Park anymore. I skied a LOT there around 69-71. Don't they allow that anymore? All I saw was a couple of rowing sculls (sp?). There were several articles in the paper about all the businesses that are closing down and about all the vacant buildings that are left. Latest is DHL in Wilmington going under. Also Delco is closing the Morain plants. Lots of places look like a ghost town. I just love driving around and remembering. Boy has the area on Keowee near the old Friches and over near the old Diamond Club deteriorated.
Anyway - had fun all the same.

I remember the Tall Timbers very well. My company held their Christmas dinner there for many years.

Yeh, I remember those pieces of plastic to try and make it look like you had color TV. My Dad put it on, looked at it, then took it off and threw it in the trash. It didn't work very well.

I worked for MISCO (McCalls Information Services Comp) as a computer operator (night shift)on the UD campus around 1968 and we used to walk down too the corner to I think a Parkmore for dinner. Other times we went to an Italian restaurant across the street from the Fairgrounds entrance for dinner and a beer and watch the UD Flyers on TV if on. I'm trying to remember the names of 2 bars down there (not sure of street name Brown?? One was S of Ray Bryant Chevy (Timothy's) and the other was N a few blocks from the Arby's that was across from the bowling alley. Can't remember that bar's name. I had a 66 then a 69 vette and a friend worked at Ray Bryant so I was there a lot. Bought 69 from White Allen though. Anyone remember a guy that drove around in a black herse with a gurney in back and a dummy on it? He worked with me at UD. People talk about Dr Creep but I remember another guy who had a spook picture show on TV that I think was sponsored by Strohs beer???

You bet Dayton has German influence! Saint Mary's Elementary on Xenia Avenue is where my mother went to school-Father Bergmeier was the German priest everyone was scared to death of! Mt grandparents on both sides were from Germany-exceot my dad's mother, whose parents were from Germany! My mother's aunts used to listen to Hitler on the radio (BEFORE World War II, of course!). They said they didnt like how he spoke! My mom's father would not speak English to his children-German ONLY!
BUT, the premier site for the peoples of the Fatherland was always Cincinnati!

Couldnthit - speaking of hippies, there was a little coffee shop somewhere (Wayne?) called the Lemon Tree where they had the guitar players on a stool usually. Peter Paul and Mary type stuff. There was a waterbed store next to it.

Also - the name LT Club ran a bell - does anyone know where that was? Still looking for the name of the 2 clubs out toward Huber Heights. Someone also mentioned pookie pokie club - was this the one near Huber Heights with the jacuzzi in it?

My parents are both from Dayton and my dad used to own a gas and service station at the corner of Catalpa and Salem. I'm not sure when he bought it but I think it was 1973 he joined the Air Force and we moved away (I was about 4 years old then.)

I'm pretty sure it was a Marathon station and I believe he named it "Bruce's Marathon." His name was Bruce Stout.

I was looking at a map of the place on maps.live.com; I found the house we lived in and I see that his station is now, sadly, an empty lot.

He passed away a few years ago from cancer and I've been teaching my sons about their grandfather.

Does anybody remember this station?

Sure, I remember the station. I live one block from there. Until it closed down, I remember it as Stoney's Marathon. It's been quite awhile since it was a gas station.

Goodyear had a service center there for years until they moved to Otterbein and Salem where Sterns Sohio used to be located. The old Marathon station is an auto repair place now. I think it's called Salem Auto Repair.

The empty lot you saw was one of the other three corners at that intersection. The old station is still there.

We used to live on W. Norman. I found our house on maps.live.com -- it is still there.

The BP wasn't built until sometime later in the 70's. Before that, there were a few small stores located there, one which was a donut shop that I frequented on a regular basis.

The stores were torn down when the BP was built and now the BP is gone.

I was one of the unfortunate ones that got laid off from DPL in the early 80's. But I do remember the little bar we all hung out at. All I can remember it was in the Leo, Stanley, Keowee st area, and they had the video game Frogger, and it was near a low income apartment complex. Anyone remember the name.. ? After that I hit the road and now work for the utility company in Florida.

There was a bar at the corner of Leo and Keowee called the "Al Rancho." I stopped there several times after work for a beer or two. The low income apartments would be Parkside homes, a block from the bar. They're being torn down now.

The bar closed down a year or two ago as the owner retired. I don't know if anyone bought the building and opened another bar.

There's Frank's Tavern on Webster across from the old Chrysler plant and Jays and Jeans on Leo. There was also a bar on Keowee just south of Stanley Avenue but I think it's closed now and I don't remember the name.

Did the bar happened to be located anywhere near McCook bowling alley?

I think the Al Rancho was called Leo's Al Rancho but don't quote me on that.

I showed my mom the aerial picture on maps.live.com of the building that still exists on Catalpa and Salem and she confirmed that it was indeed my dad's gas station -- not the empty lot on the opposing corner.

It was "Bruce's Marathon" in the late 60's and early 70's until he sold it to join the Air Force.

Even though it's only a picture, it is interesting to look at it and think of my dad. Silly, I know, but it means something to me.

driver - Yes, the donut shop. Was it Mr. Donut? I remember that the donut on their sign kind of aged after a while and looked kind of blue. I also remember that they had really good cake donuts. They must have had yeast donuts too but those don't stand out so much in my memory.

Another memory - the shop that was next door to the donut place was a pet store. My family bought various pet turtles and rabbits there.

Further out Salem (around Malvern maybe?) was a bike shop. A friend of mine worked there. Can't remember the name.

Anybody else take piano lessons from Louella Batdorf Ripsch? She gave lessons at her home on Auburn. She had one of those electric stair climbers that I always wished I could ride.

AMEN - I have totally enjoyed all the memories this site has provided. Places I hadn't thought about in 40 years. I love to find people I knew from back then and chat. Here is a good example you might get a kick out of. I dated a gal in Beavercreek for several years back in 68-71 before I moved to FL. In 2001 after 29 years, she found me on classmates.com and since we lived 2 hrs apart and were both recently single, we started dating again and now we are living together. We always reminisce about the Dayton days - especially when we go back to see her folks.

RCINKY - I remember all the Beavercreek stuff except Riffles???
I was actually in Biology class (Mr Snider) at Beavercreek when the Camberra came down. I saw it go by the window. It always amazed me how it managed to land in that u-shaped area. Now the tire that landed on the car was cool too.

Beaver Grill - yep ate there a lot when we could sneak out of school.
Remember Knollwood Pharmacy and the guy across the street that raced the Maroone Chevelle - wasn't his name Dallas Lundsford? How about the drive up photo dropoff in Lofino's parking lot?

I spent a lot of time at Airways Center since I lived near where Fairfields Common Mall is now. Rode bikes down to Page Manor too.

Where was Sackstedders? I have been trying to remember the name of a fancy restaurant just Soth West on Linden from Smithville.

Country Kitchen in Kettering was my hangout.

Maybe we need to take this off board, but I'd love to talk cars with you guys. I LIVED at those hangouts especially the Country Kitchen but maybe a few years before you guys. I remember racing at Shelby Raceway and then driving around the Kitchen with the top down and trophy on the passenger seat and the shoepolish still on the windshield. HA I left the area in Jan 72 but had a wild gold 69 vette painted by the Egyptian. Before that, a silver 66 vette with a radical L-88 in it. Raced and beat a lot of cars there. I don't remember any gal in a fast vette unless she showed up after Jan 72 because I had one of, if not THE quickest vette in the area and I knew most other vette owners. We would all park together along the fence at the Kitchen. Do you remember the night the 2 vettes came in the Kitchen with open headers and did burnouts and supposedly cracked the back window in the restaurant? One of them was me. I also had a friend named Kent Chamberlain (if I remember right) whose dad had a dark blue Shelby GT500. Ah - the good old days - still play though - high 10 sec 87 Buick Grand National hence the screen name - TLTURBO

If I remember right, as soon as you went over RT 35 on Smithville, (heading South towards Kettering) the next intersection was Linden. Turn right on Linden and the restaurant was immediately on your left. It was a fairly fancy place where you would take a prom date or someone you were trying to impress or (well, you know).

Also - if you continued on out Smithville, there was a pretty popular theater. It appears to be gone now. Anyone remember it's name?

The restaurant on Linden, over time became a greasy spoon inhabited mostly by drunks. Sorry.

The theaters this thread are referring to are The Dabel on Watervaliet and The Cinema East on Smithville Rd.

Cinema East lost out to the Mall mega theaters, went down the path of Midnight Movies and eventually closed. Torn down, it is now an empty building that was for a time a major pharmacy chain that washed out.

The Dabel burned down in the late 60's and is now the home of a beer and wine drive thru.

I miss the Dabel. It's where I saw all of the Sean Connery Bond movies, The Blue Max, The Sterile Cookoo, and a lot of Harry's stop motion, Greek Monsters.

Peace out,
MtM

Sorry to be nit-picky, but it WAS the Dabel Theater on Smithville. It was torn down and a Rite-Aid was built there, which is now also vacant.

Here is a link to the Dabel page on a website called Cinema Treasures:

http://cinematreasures.org/theater/10072/

The theater on Watervliet was the Belmont Theater. It may have burned down, but I think it was turned into some sort of business building -- I think the beer drive-thru is up the street from the theater's location. The last time I saw a movie there was "Gone with the Wind" when I was in high school ... about 1973 or so.

Here is a jpeg of the flyer for the Belmont Theater's opening:

I have been trying to find someone, anyone, who remember the bear that was chained to the light pole on Rip Rap Road (or it might have been Waggoner Ford Rd - the actual name of the road) at the Kennel just off of Needmore Road. I went to school at Trotwood Madison in the late 60's I remember Sam's Pizza was the greatest. Hara Arena, Hula Balu, i think that was the name, Frankies skating Rink, Melody 49,Victory Theater,Icelandia. I worked at downtown Rikes in the record department, remember the tunnel that went under the street that would take you to the trucks that had the store supplys. Drag racing on Hwy 49. Wolf Creek road and how dangerous it was. Able to lay in a yard and not be ate alive by bugs. Buying a dollars worth of gas and getting your windows cleaned. Riding my bike to the Salem Mall. I could go on for ever. I miss all those great times.
