Tom Hamlin used to do H.S. football games on radio, from Welcome Stadium (I believe that is now U.D.'s stadium, behind the arena). He would then be on the WHIO sports desk during 11 O'clock news. One Friday night, he started his show by recounting the ending of the game he called that evening, saying that he had never seen anything like it. I don't remember the teams playing, but the one who was ahead by 2-3 points had the ball as the clock ticked down. The QB watched the clock on the scoreboard, and as it hit zero, he flung the ball straight up in the air. He and his teammates started celebrating a "victory" (NOT). One of the opponents, realizing there was no whistle, grabbed the ball out of the air and ran, untouched, for the REAL winning score. Apparently the scoreboard-clock was ahead of the ref on the field who had the "official" time. According to his watch, time had yet to expire, even if by only a second-or-two, and since the ball was in the air, play was not done until the runner crossed the goal line - with his 6 points being enough for the win.
