A group of us were trying to remember who the Dayton Police Chief was in the early 1970's. Also, who the Montgomery Sherrif was during the same time period.

If you have the opportunity, you should visit Carillon Park's exhibit regarding the history of the Dayton Police Department. It includes uniforms, photographs, etc of the department through the years including portraits of all the police chiefs.

Grover O'Conner was my great grandmother's nephew. He didn't like my long hair.

Gary Haines was Sheriff for 12 yrs 1988-2000. He passed awy at 50 of cancer. They named the Mongomery County Childrens Center formally Shawn Acres for him in 2001 , Haines Childrens Center. He was a graduate of Stebbins High School 1968. Probably the best one we ever had. Dave Vore was elected next and was Sheriff for 8yrs and he retired before his term ended in 2008 and moved out of state. Phil Plummer is the Sheriff now.I'm still searching for who it was in the 70's.

I'm not sure of his name (Price, maybe?) a Dayton chief of long tenure in the fifties....
Dayton was such a great place in those days, that his phone number and address (Ridge Ave?) was actually listed listed in the phone book. Really!
Now, how about that fifties fans? ---------- Mikey, Gatlinburg, TN

If you would like to see the photographs of every Dayton police chief and interim chief from 1867 to present, click on this link (or paste in your browser) and scroll to the bottom of the page. It is the layout for Dayton Police History Exhibit at Carillon Park that historymom mentioned.
http://dph-foundation.web.officelive.com/ExhibitDisplayLayout.aspx
The DPH Exhibit - Patrolling the Streets of Dayton - is now closed. It ran from May to November 2008. However, the eight primary display cases can be seen on the first floor of the Safety Building, 335 W. Third. That smaller exhibit is scheduled to end in mid-May 2010.

I don't, Kenny, but you might try going to the Dayton IAFF 136 website. I'm not positive but I believe the Dayton firefighters' historian is also the webmaster. Maybe they can offer some info or direction. The website is:

My Uncle was a Dayton Police Officer out of 5th district in the 60's and early 70's. He arrested Tyree Broomfield for Grand Theft Auto. He resigned when Broomfield became Chief of Police.

When I was a young girl Paul Price was the police chief. My father joined the Dayton police in 1946,the year I was born.I can remember Paul Price coming to our house for dinner several times. It was a different time back then in the early 50's and I suppose it was a common thing for the chief to visit his officer's homes on occasion.
