WEST CARROLLTON ca. 2006 -- Woodrow W. "Woody" Bowman, whose dirt-floor, roadside produce stand grew into a local retail icon and a regional destination long before today's big-box supermarkets, died Saturday in Waynesville. He was 93.
Woody's Market, the landmark grocery of the Miami Valley, was founded and operated by Mr. Bowman from 1944 to 1999 on old U.S. 25, the Dixie Highway, in this city of 13,800. In its heyday, the store even bridged the highway with a popular overhead restaurant. People came from all over to shop and dine at Woody's. "Woody was an outstanding businessman in our community and provided so many opportunities for our youth," Mayor Maxine Gilman said Monday.
Mikey, Gatlinburg, TN...... I and nearly all of my WCHS friends worked there in the mid-fifties. Woody had a job for any local kid that was willing to actually work,

Woodys was a place that sold just about anything you were looking for in the way of food. Also had one of the best bakerys around. When they closed, the folks who worked and baked for them opened a place on Alex road. Haven't been down in that area for years and was sad to hear of its demise back in the 90's.

The bakery that opened on Alex Road was called a Taste of Elegance. They did a big business from a small store front facility.
About three or four years ago, they constructed a new, much larger building that includes not only the bakery but a cafe. It's located on the site of the old Woody's market. When they moved to the new building, the name was changed to Ele.

In the early 70's I used to go there on payday to cash my check. I think they charged you a dime and the line was pretty long on Fridays. They had a really large scale at the Dixie Dr entrance and I believe they sold Lottery tickets at that entrance also. Eating at the over-the road restuarant was always a family treat for the kids.
