Hey guys! Curt asked me to start a new thread where we can continue our wonderful ongoing discussion of glorious days past in Dayton. The original thread is a whopping 22 pages long and is getting a bit cumbersome.
I'm so glad that the topic has caught on so well ... there must be a lot of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s in Dayton. Aren't the memories fantastic?
Thanks for sharing your experiences. And if ever think you can't go home again, I just learned the Dayton Gems are going to be back at Hara Arena this winter. Yee haw!!

Hey Jeff,
Thanks for starting this up. Yes, the original thread is getting to the point where it takes forever to open and I am afraid that it may freeze up for good. I will go to the original thread and tell everyone to come here instead.
And to all of you, thanks to the over 1,100 people who have now signed up to Ask A History Question. I don't think Jeff knew what he was about to start two years ago, but boy am I glad he did! I have met several people from here in person now and consider them all good friends.

when i found this board 2 years ago it was by luck on a google search for the cavern at forest park.this is one of the few sites i post on.i enjoy everything i read here(new bookmark)

I miss walking down the streets of trotwood at night when it was snowing giant flakes you could see at the street lights. Running and sliding down the streets. This was in the late 60's and i haven't done it since. Now here in florida the heat index is 110. Youb better have a pool or stay in the house..

OK, I asked this a good while back and never got a reply SOOOOO, I'm asking again!!!!!
Back around 1970, there were 2 party groups for singles that had monthly parties on Friday Nights here and there. They were called POETS and PRO-POETS. Difference was PRO was supposed to be for more 'upscale' people and charged a cover to keep the riff raft like me out HA - didn't work... Anyway, POETS stood for P... ON EVERYTHING - TOMORROW'S SATURDAY. Anyone else remember going to them? Best one was they had a swimsuit fashion show at some club down south and I got asked to help escort the girls to and from the stage for the judging. THAT was a good night.

OK - someone left the door open and I followed you all on in here. And no tlturbo, I never heard of such a party back in the 70's. But to tell you the truth, I wasn't much of a party girl.
I just wanted to share that I have had my Dayton fix for the month. I buzzed up I-75 thru the construction and stopped at Charlie's Deli for some cabbage rolls and stopped at a Cassanos on the way home for a carryout deluxe pizza. Next month it will be Parkmoors again!

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ... I love the Cassano's deluxe too. Every time I go to Dayton I go back and forth between Cassano's and Hasty Tasty for the Parkmoor-like chicken.

We will be in Dayton for a long July 4th weekend and will of course have Marions and Cassanos. WHERE is a Hasty Tasty near N Dayton (Shilo area). Is the Parkmoor chicken only made that one night a month?

The Hasty Tasty is on Linden near Woodman ... it's been there since 1953 or so. It looks live a dive, but the food and service is super.

I love it. My wife gets pancakes and loves them. I think the chicken is identical to Parkmoor. all in all, great food!

Just wanted to say howdy to all of my internet friends...I haven't forgot you all. Me and my lovely bride are on vacation in Santa Fe , New Mexico. They have great food here but nothing like Parkmoor or Cassano's. Take care all

Mikey, ask Jeff, the shappy chic looks keeps lot's of kinds of peeps IN there, too. Dave won't allow Cindi to visit Bunny's ... I am de-tastied. Have fun in NM Max, too bad you all are going to miss the fireworks at the river this year. Hope to see you, Terry, and anyone else. Becky... deli cabbage rolls? Shame.. wanted to make you my Old N. Dayton ones. Terry, get with Ghman for a recipe if possible for you to take back to FL with you and make your own chicken.

1949 I lived on eugene ave. rode my bike up florence turned right on greenlawn. followed it to smithville. turned right and across the penn railroad tracks. across the street to dirt road beside the switch yards. followed to next dirt road. turned right. went about 100 yards to new diner opening called hasty tasty. no money to spend at the time on food. but probably visited there later on in my car 1 million times. remember conway twitty appeared there as part of radio promotion.

Does anyone remember ice skating on the lagoon near Island Park. Every night Box 21 would flood the ice to make a new surface for the next day. The city provided benches, lights and a bonfire. We had a lot of fun playing hockey there.

Does anybody remember where the bar called The John was located? The decor of course was "johns" (toilets). Also, what was the year?
...a week has gone by...
Can anyone direct me to someone or someway to find out where this was...it's driving me nuts!!!!!!

*****NEWSFLASH!***** Parkmoor Chicken Sighted in the Lone Star State!!! Elvis seen eating local Dayton delicacy with Bigfoot in Texas! Pictures at 11!
I made up the Elvis part. I can't believe it. I was feeling sorry for myself because I am way down here in Texas and unable to get to Frickers for the Parkmoor chicken. Then, yesterday on the fourth, the wife and I went to Babe's Restaurant in Roanoke, TX. Lo and behold-they were serving chicken that tastes EXACTLY like I remember the old Parkmoor chicken. Limited menu-chicken and chicken fried steak (Something you nawtherners have probably never experienced). A real taste of home. If any of the regulars on this site ever gets to the Dallas area, look me up. The chicken's on me! No foolin'.

I remember the Red, White and Blue Pool hall on east 5th street just off Main. I learned how to play pool and snooker there and I even slept there a few times after staying up all night.
I also remember Island Park in the winter, never had ice skates but went there and played on the ice as I was growing up. As a kid I loved the snow, clean white, pure snow. After I started working I was introduced to black snow which is not fun. I also remember scooping up a pan of fresh white snow, adding some of mother's half and half, a bit of sugar and some vanilla then eating until my stomach would ache. I stayed away from any snow that appeared yellow in color.

Hi all. Sorry it has been so long since logging in to this site but things have been really crazy. I am hoping everybody is getting together at Frickers again.I had it on my calendar to go but I had family come into town so I couldn't make it. Please let me know when the next one is and I will be there. Also, I have finally got around to making new posts to the Dayton Nostalgia website in all the different sections. I ate at the Sandy's across from Airway Shopping Center. They seemed to have the best burgers and fries back in the 60s and early 70s. I think the one I ate at went out in '73 or so ... they were replaced by Hardee's. Yuk.

ABOUT DAYTON BANDS
I read almost all of the last 2 years of postings. Does anyone remember "The Magnificent 7" band at the Diamond Club, or the "Gold River Band" at Rumor's in Kettering? I was a member of both of those groups. We played there for a couple years, but I never hear anyone speak of the band. Maybe it was unforgettle, hehe. I am retired now in Arizona, but still entertain people my age here. Here is my website: www.dallasdan.gobot.com In my spare time, I have managed to write a novel that tells about my and my family's lives from the 1940's til now. It's called "Dalton Shores". If you wanna read some HOT musician stories, about Ohio bands, read it. It's available on Amazon.com. I didn't use the real city and state name, but you'll know. If anyone remembers me, I'd like to hear from you. If there are any people my age on here, you may even remember "The Jaguars" my first band. The members were myself, Glen miller, later of "The Just-n-Tyme" band, Kelly Coffey and Ray Kelly. We were from the east side of Dayton and played sometimes at the KofC Hall in east dayton. I remember about everything you talked about on here. Is fun remembering. I went to Belmont High and Eastmont elementary and U.S. Grant elementary.

Hey Tom, I remember Forest park amusment park. I was just a little tike. They had boxing matches behind the amusement park. Everyone spread blankets out on the ground and had picnics as they watched the fights. I believe Forest park closed it's doors after a rollercoaster car came off and they got sued.

The St. Helen's festival is still great. It was held a few weeks ago, and I dealt Showdown there on Saturday night.

Some things never change! The festival was a real neighborhood event every summer. Do you live in that part of town Dan-O? I grew up on Spinning.

sweetpea ... my mom and dad were the original owners of 483 Spinning Road ... I was born in 1960 and lived there until July of 1979. It was a wonderful place to grow up!

for davew i remember the forest park billiards in back we would ride are bicycles up main from the five oaks/forest ave.area and play a few games.circa 1976.would love to know about more when it comes to the whole history of that place from the amusment park/"shopping mall" period are there any pictures anywhere on net that anyone knows of.

There are some images on the web. There's a guy (Scott?) that has a web site,soaphs.com (Southern Ohio Amusement Park Historical Society), that shows before and after images of Forest Park. On his site, search for Frankies Forest Park.
I too would like to know more about Frankie's Forest Park. From what I know, there was a roller skating rink (The Roller Drome), a roller coaster, and other rides. Scherer's Ice Cream was up on North Main (Covington Pike), and at the park, the electric trolly lines ended.Somewhere behind it was a car racing track. I have some images of the race track, but I don't really know exactly where it was located. If anyone has any bits of memories of Frankie's, and the area around it, I would really appreciate the information.

See David - I know that you love rock and roll. Remember last summer I had talked about the McCoys and having pictures of them. I still have them for you. Also today I went to a car cruise-in and they were playing Hang on Sloopy. Then they announced that one of the McCoys was there with his car. I went over and talked to him. His name is Terry Bach. We had a nice little chat. Really exciting. Rick lives in Florida and still plays periodically. OF course Randy Jo Hobbs passed away. Terry lives in Dayton and works on old cars. If you would still like these pictures, please let me know.

I used to live across the street from a Randy Hobbs, just outside of Englewood. He was a few years younger than me and I hung with his brother. That was back in 58 and 59. They moved to Indiana and I often wondered if Randy was the one in the McCoys. I know most of them were from Union City Indiana.

Dang! All these posts sure brings back memories, was born & raised in Dayton/Kettering, and had fame & glory right there in Dayton as the drummer in the all-girl band, Vicki & the Rest. See all about us (if you didn't see us in person back then) at www.buckeyebeat.com., oh boy!

i was with john bates. he was a meat buyer for super value foods. we were marking meat for shipment to stores in dayton, ohio and yellow springs. does anyone remember him or know what happened to him?

We moved into a house on Geyer Street in 1959 (I was 4 years old then). The really nice Houses were on Squirrel Road, down the hill from Five Oaks Park. I was convinced all the Rich Doctors lived there because they gave out the best candy on Halloween. I spent most of my summer days at Five Oaks Pool. Even on the colder days.
I remember Van Cleve Elementary School, Ms Bartels (Principal), Mr Kutcher (Asst. Man he could wield a paddle) Mr Shingledecker (Gym Teacher), Mr Hall (English), Mr Boehm (Reading), Mr Matte (Science), Ms Richey (Math) and Ms. Scharr (Music). Square dances on Friday night (We didn't know how else to dance) Mother's Tea programs for the 7th and 8th Grade. Poetry Contests (Lucia May Wyant speech award. My Brother won that one)
The Pharmacy catty-cornered from the school was owned by Mr & Mrs Yoshida. Mike Yoshida was in my class. Comics were 10 cents then. I about had a cow when they went to 12 cents. Hell, that was two more pop-bottles.
I remember Lynches marked on Geyer and Neal avenues and Mrs Millers store on Geyer and Warder with big sugar cookies & the "Speckled Ball" gum machine.

You can certainly tell from the photo of the band that was posted on www.buckeyebeat.com that you and Penny were sisters. Do you both still live in the Dayton area? I was only 12 years old in 1964, so your band was a little ahead of my time.

I do remember Frances dating a "Butch" Overstreet for a very short time, must have been his nickname back then, but I think I only met him once. Yes, Penny & I did look a lot alike only I'm a lot taller! We live waaaaaaaaay out in Wa. state these days, but 2 of the band still live back around the Dayton area. Gee, you were just a baby at age 12, no wonder you didn't know about us, they were fun times for sure.

Does anyone here remember the tornado that hit Kettering and Beavercreek on May 8, 1969? This was five years before the giant Xenia tornado. The '69 tornado was rated F3, touched down on E. Dorothy Lane less than 1/4 mile from County Line Rd, continued northeast, heavily damaged the Colony Apartments and the then-new Shell station under construction, crossed County Line and literally exploded a house and turned over a car. It continued on and a large 2x4 piece of roof support from the house that blew up came through my bedroom window narrowly missing me and I ran from that room to another and covered my head. We managed to keep our roof although it had to be replaced and 11 windows were smashed. A side entry door was blown in by roofing and our rear deck was destroyed. The tornado heavily damaged and destroyed many other houses in the Heather Trails development in Beavercreek for several blocks before it finally lifted. Gov. Rhodes flew in and surveyed the damage from a Kettering Police helicopter and landed in the farm field (now K-Mart) right behind our house. Late that evening our family ate dinner at Parkmoor on Woodman at Dorothy Lane. The next morning the National Guard was patrolling our neighborhood, but we stayed in our house despite not having any power for about a day.

Yes, I suppose you were a lot taller than Penny since in the picture you're almost as tall as she is and she's standing up while you're sitting down behind your drums. How long did Vicki and the Rest remain in existence?

Good point Dan-O! We stayed together as a band about 4 yrs., then all went our seperate ways, Penny went on and played in the Bittersweet girl band who came along after us, you can see them (Penny's giving details to buckeyebeat) soon on that site too. To Bigmo, I remember lots of close calls, and my parents were still living on E. Dorothy when that tornado happened, and I had just moved away from Xenia (just behind Kil-Kare speedway), been gone a month, when that BIG ONE hit Xenia, boy glad to be in nice calm Wa. state now (except for when Mt. St. Helens blew her top, with ash everywhere!)

My son visited Dayton several weeks ago and his stop there was at Joe's pizza. He said it was still as good as he remembered. We'll have to visit it again our next trip back.
Sure do miss downtown in the 50's & 60's. I remember my mom dressing up with her hat & white gloves (in the summer) and men holding the door open for her and tipping their hat's when she walked through the door. Ah the good ole days!! Rikes @ Christmas, Gallagher's drug store and the best Cherry malt's ever!!
