Joe's Pizza is on Airway right before it turns into Third Street heading toward Downtown Dayton. Great pizza!!! It's right next to Overlook Homes.

Bigmo-I remember the tornado in 1969. I lived off Indian Ripple at the time. My mom and me were really scared and my dad just kept watching TV like it wasn't a big deal. I remember putting the dog and a couple of bird cages in the bathroom and then sitting in there until it was over. lol

Forgot to add this to my post above. I was thinking about those Foto Fair and Foto Mats today for some reason. Those little places were popping up in parking lots everywhere back then. They were quite the handy invention though weren't they. Probably the first drive up place of any kind if you think about it...besides banks of course, or were there drive up banks then? I don't really remember.

There was one of those photo places in the parking lot of the Lofinos Market when it was in Knollwood. For a short time I dated a gal that worked there. Great looking gal and A TWIN. They lived in Beavercreek but I believe they graduated from Stebbins about 67-70?

I have a hard time remembering when certain things came into being in our lives like drive-up tellers, and for the LIFE of me, I can't remember the first McDonalds. We moved back to Beavercreek in 1960 from Memphis and I remember the Frisches, Parkmoors, Hasty Tastys, A&W's, Frostops, Vic Cassano's but NOT McDonalds back then. I KNOW there had to be some McDonalds around in the late 60's because when I moved to Ft Myers, FL in Jan 72 the local McDonalds was the local cruise hangout and it wasn't 'WOW - what's a McDonalds' so WHY can't I remember any in the Dayton area??

turbo...You are so right about McDonalds. I don't remember EVER eating at a McDonalds when I was a kid. We always ate at Burger Chef acrosss from Rikes Kettering, Burger King at Dorothy and Wilmington Pk., and of course Parkmoor, Hasty Tasty, A&W, Cassanos, Country Kitchen, Red Barn etc...at least in the 60s and early 70s I can't even think of where there were any. Living in Beavercreek, Kettering was pretty much where we went to eat and shop, since Beavercreek didn't have anything back then and I don't remember any in Kettering.

I have connections at McDonalds, my brother drives the local area Ronald to his personal appearances. According to the McD's website the first one in Toledo was 1963 and there was a least one in Cincinnati in 1968 - the fish sandwich was first served there. The first two in the Dayton area was one on Wilmington at Dorothy Lane in Kettering (which is still there and doing business) and the one on North Dixie Drive which has been boarded up for quite a few years. They were there in the early 60's, but not sure of the year they were built.

RFK61 - do I remember right that in Beavercreek there was a Hasty Tasty on the S side of Dayton Xenia Pike just West of the intersection with Belbrook Fairfield Rd? That would be the intersection just N of the BeaverBowl and skating rink area.

It's strange that there was a McDonalds at Wilmington and Dorthy Lane that I don't remember because I practically LIVED at the Country Kitchen at that corner from 67 to 72.

Turbo...There was a restaurant there that we used to eat at but I don't remember if it was a Hasty Tasty, the restaurant building is still there and has been renamed numerous times, it just closed again recently. Here's what I remember about that area. Toms Sohio was on one corner, and there was a Dunnigans Hardware in that area which is now Barneys Hardware. I think there was a sporting goods store attached back then. There was a bar/nightclub in the now Kroger shopping center by the bowling alley and skating rink but I don't remember the name, and there was a Goldmans there at the east end of the cneter and a movie theater. Those were all there in the 70s.
Was Country Kithcen at Wilmington & Dorothy? I thought it was at Woodman & Dorothy. What was the one by Shoppers Fair then? Was it a Parkmoor?

There was a gas station on the NE corner of Dorothy Lane and Wilmington Pike and the Country Kitchen was the next building N on Wilmington BUT it's parking lot ran around behind the gas station and there was an entrance from Dorothy Lane. Looking at the Google Earth map of that corner, it shows a McDonalds straight across Wilmington Pike from where the Country Kitchen was.

Woodman and Dorothy Lane was where Rikes Kettering was on the SW corner and there was that large Delco or someone elses corporate complex and park on the NW corner. Shoppers Fair doesn't ring a bell.

Ok,let me think...at Dorothy and Woodman was Rikes shopping center, then down woodman on the right was Top Value Stamps, and across from that (roughly) was Shoppers Fair Department Store, then next to that was a restaurant which I thought was Country Kitchen, but now I think it was Parkmoor. I was in that area at least every other day, so I should remember but I need to dust the cobwebs off! If you would go the other way on woodman, Delco was on the left. I'm starting to remember a little more about the Country Kitchen on Wilmington but for the life of me I don't remember the Mcdonalds...

Like I said,, I left Dayton in Jan 72 and I don't think there was a McD's across the street. Just N of the Kitchen was a Shoney's ? Pizza place and on N across the street was a Village Inn.

Sometimes what I remember amazes me and other times I can't remember something simple like McDonalds.

Shakey's Pizza on Wilmington...there was also one on Stroop Rd. between Dixie and Kettering Blvd, now a medical office. Does it still smell like oregano and tomato sauce?

There was a Joes that opened up on Colonel Glenn just before 444 but they didn't last long (not the same owners). The original Joe's @ Smithville & Airway can't be beat!!

rfk61, I used to work at Top Value Enterprises. That was indeed a Parkmoor across the street on Woodman Dr. I ate chicken there literally every other day. I paid $1.49 for 5 pieces of chicken, fries and cole slaw.

Does anyone remember when Paul Baby Dixon came to the Rike's Kettering shopping center to perform in the parking lot? He brought Bonnie Lou, Colleen Sharp and the Bruce Brownfield band with him on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't televised. It was just a local appearance.

Bigmo--All this time I kept calling it Country Kitchen. I knew we ate at Parkmoor ALOT, why that escaped me I don't know. Did Country Kitchen have a big statue out front of a boy dressed in overalls and a straw hat with a bee on his toe and a slingshot in his back pocket?

Can someone tell me all of the stores that were in the Rikes Kettering Shopping Center? I know there was a Kresge store there because I got my first Barbie Doll there, but what else? Was there a grocery store and also, was there a different grocery store in the place where Stumps is now, or was it always Stumps?

Rikes Kettering used to have a Kroger, a Winters bank, the Kresge and Rikes. I think that was it. My mom was getting groceries in that Kroger when the tornado hit in 1969 further up Dorothy Lane into Beavercreek.

Yes, the Country Kitchen was at Wilmington and Dorothy Lane, but I'm not sure if it had a Frisch's-like statue. But their mascot/logo was as you describe. He was called "Country Boy."

But of course - that was when it was over in Fairborn and was a small place. They decorated the Atlas missle that sat just inside the main entrance. I went there several times in the early to mid 60's before they moved it to the new location. I'm older than you but lived in Fairborn from 47 to 54 then back in Beavercreek (Fairborn address out near Fairfield Commons Mall) from 60 to 72. I spent a lot of time in Fairborn and would love to find a site like this to discuss Fairborn places with others. I would cruise to the drive in restaurant (Frisches?) just out past Langs Chevy in my corvette occasionally and I hunted on the base in the fall and was on the base rifle team during highschool since my dad worked at Wright Patt. I know Curt wants to keep this to Dayton stuff.

There was also a Gray Drug Store, later becoming a Revco in the Rikes Kettering lot. My parents had an account at Gem Savings in the same shopping center...not sure if that was before or after Winters.

Does anyone reemember the Beaver Grill in Beavercreek?

OHHH I amy DYING for a Marion's pizza. Then I'll go to Cassano's for one and maybe one of their steak sandwiches. I'm drooling now. Okay who here went to Meadowdale class of '72!!! I saw Tim Hagan's name mentioned. Tomorrow, when i take a break from my job searching, I'm gonna come here and see if I can figure out who is who and find some people and read all this and yes I skated at Icelandia and I remember the sonic booms. Now I live next to Johnson Space Center in Houston. Don't get the booms, but we have the rocket scientists and astronauts. I just had to post this real quick cuz I'm smiling now and haven't done that in a while!!!

Yes, the Beaver Grill was about 1/2 mile East of the High School on the corner of Dayton Xenia and Factory Rd.

I'll probably catch some flak for this but I don't think Marion's is as good as they used to be. I was raised on Marion's, like a lot of folks from Dayton. Anymore, the pizza seems too greasy and too often underdone. Something has changed, JMHO.

What I find totally aggravating about Marions is that they don't take credit cards - JUST CASH. I always use plastic so when we take the family (usually 6 of us) I have to go get cash first just so I can pay for pizza. Come on Marions - get with the times.

Julie1972-

You don't have far to go if you're looking for a job. Lots of 'em, and good paying ones, here in the Dallas area. Medical, aerospace, and sales professionals are always in demand here. Moved here twenty-five years ago from Dayton and haven't looked back. Miss Dayton-it will always be home-but it's also good to know where your next meal is coming from and that your city is not at the mercy of one big (financially troubled) company like General Motors.

Sorry Curt-I know this supposed to be about Dayton stuff. I hope one ex-Daytonian trying to help another one out is permissable. If not, feel free to delete. I promise not to make it a habit. Thanks.

ABSOLUTELY, ask the Marion's order taker to bake your pie 'crispy' in the old ovens (they call them "traditional" ovens), where they still heat the sandwiches and spaghetti. You will think that you're in pizza heaven.

Pepsi OR Coke on tap!

Say hello to Marion Glass while you're roaming around "pizza heaven."

rfk, I don't know why anyone would try to open a new restaurant with the way the economy is now. It is a hard job anytime. Speaking of BBQ, the Old Hickory on Brown St. was always my favorite. Not to many good BBQ joints here in south Floida. I miss Old Hickory's ribs. At least they were great 30 years ago.

Is this the Hasty Tasty I remember from back in the late 60's? It was just West of the intersection of Dayton Xenia Pike and Bellbrook Fairfield Rd (the old MAIN intersection in Beavercreek) on the South side of DX Pike. My first job was just West of there about 1/4 mile or so at Data Corporation. They had a large 2 story brick building then built their data center another 1/2 mile W down in an industrial park.

Yep - the main office bldg was about 1/4-1/2 mile West toward Knollwood on the same side of DX pike from the Hasty Tasty. Around 1966-67 they built a new large 2 story bldg in the back of a new industrial park about another 1/2 mile towards Knollwood. The road went in and made a big loop. The new bldg was at the back end near the railroad tracks. They moved the computer center there. I worked at the old place 1966-67 then at the new place for a year or 2. So I was gone from Data Corp by 68-69.

Alabama I read your post from back on Aug 02 and you said you met one of the McCoys and his name was Terry Bach. I grew up with Terry in Germantown and he was never a member of the McCoys. The closest he ever came to being an entertainer is standing on the street corner in Germantown doing Elvis impersonations as a teen in the mid to late 70s. I have heard he was potraying himself as one of the McCoys. Speaking of Germantown does anyone remember THE MUPHETS rock band from Germantown.

I have to tell y'all-I was back to Dayton last week on business and couldn't believe how much has changed in just the last year.

All the construction at the airport reminds me of Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere". Dayton's "Airport to Nowhere". I can't believe Dayton has deteriorated so much.

General Motors ought to be ashamed on so may levels. I went by the closed Moraine truck plant and it looks like something out of a science fiction movie. The parking lots are overgrown and buildings are out of repair. It's not bad enough they destroyed the lives of so many good people, they have to add insult to injury by letting the property they own fall into such horrible disrepair. Nice to know you're appreciated isn.t it Moraine?

Just for old time's sake, I decided to take a drive down Main Street. Uh, make that tried to take a drive down Main Street. I got one block before construction forced me to take another route.

It really is sad and makes me feel bad for all the good people I know who still live there. Why isn't the city (and the state) doing more to attarct new industry and new business? Maybe it's time to vote out the current administration and bring in a mayor and city council determined to revitalize what was once a really great city?

As much as I hate to say it, I'm glad I got out when I did. That said, Dayton will always be home and I really hope that someday it gets back to being a place people want to travel to and business wants to locate in...and most of all a city that the good people there can be proud of!

Dayton does seem to have a real knack for shooting itself in the foot since the exodus of the 50's, 60's and 70's. The Riverscape fiasco, changing architects in midstream, the fountains that never worked as they should have. The very disappointing 2003 celebration of 100 years of flight, no vision, poor planning feeble execution. You have to look at leadership, always too little too late.

There have been successes though. 5th-3rd field and the Dragons are a hit beyond expectations. The revitalization of The Cannery on E. Third. South Park and the neighborhood south of MVH are coming back. Brown St and the UD ghetto have been cleaned up. The Tech Town development is showing real promise. So there is good as well as bad, I have to believe Dayton will become a viable community again in time.
