We all had steak dinner and they do have a bar. Some one brought all the year books and they were on a table for everyone to look at. There is a site on classmates.com , Beavercreek 1965.com , you can look at alot of the pictures from different years, some obituaries and other notices.
The only other reunion I went to was the 20th at Walnut Grove. Do you remember the teen center on old route 35? GBU Hall on Linden Ave. Dances!!

I think I remember going to the GBU a couple of times. Was it in the basement of a building with an outside entrance? What did GBU stand for?

I never did know what GBU stood for and yes it's entrance was on the side and you went down in the basement. The building is still there. I don't know what it is now.

SeeDavid-

Sorry you're offended. I just call it like I see it. It really saddens me to see what a pitiful shell of a great city Dayton has become. Sugar coating it doesn't change a thing. I'm sure the folks that GM, NCR, and DHL left out in the cold when they deserted Dayton wouldn't feel a bit better if everyone pretended things were different and ignored the reality.

I miss Dayton. It's home. It always will be. That said, I am fortunate enough to be comfortably employed in a state that truly is a miracle in this sad economic climate. The point I sought to make is that Dayton will never again be the great city it once was until the people wise up and change the faces that run the city and the state. In doing so, they must avoid the tendency to hitch their wagon to only one industry and base the whole city economy on that one company. My wife and I moved to Texas right after the oil business went bust here and it too was in financial tatters. The state rebuilt and recovered through diversification to become home to a number of tech industries that have helped produce a thriving economy. They did it with NO state income tax and continue to run the numbers each year with a black pen and not a red one. Dayton could do that, too. The basic building blocks are there-the people. People are resilient, and so are states and cities. There is always hope, but things won't change unless people make them change. Ignoring reality is not going to make it go away.

Once again-apologies to you and everyone on the site if I have offended. I was just relaying my furstration at a really sad situation in the city I grew up in that hurts me deeply. It's true folks-you really can't go home-only because home is never the way you left it...

John C - Don't apologize for writing about the current state of Dayton. Granted, if you 'follow the topic exactly' unless this all happened during the 60's & 70's, it 'technically' doesn't belong here. BUT this site is called DAYTON HISTORY and what could be more Historical than the decline of a wonderful city. I agree that every time I come back and drive around, or even this week using Google Earth to look at various places, the amount of deserted buildings and vacant lots is amazing. When I left in 72 it was a vibrant & alive city. But I do remember when Chrysler, NCR and Delco all went on strike at the same time and the city about died for a year or so. The only people that did well were the Pawn Shops - they were loaded. I don't know exactly when things started to change. I think the loss of the major industries over many years one after the other probably was a major contributing factor. BUT Dayton isn't alone. Anytime you pull several major manufacturing companies out of a city, this will happen. Look at Wilmington since Fed Ex (I think that was it) left. Homestead FL after the AF Base closed.

I feel that pointing out the reasons behind the gradual decline of the city is indeed historical. It's not city bashing, it's pointing out actual situations. If all these issues are ignored, how will it ever be kept from repeating somewhere else. We need to learn from our mistakes and those mistakes need to be pointed out. Granted, we can't let this deteriorate into a discussion of political greed, misguidance, city management, etc. but I don't feel that discussing it is outside the scope of this board.

Curt - you are forgiven - HA HA Hope the contributions pick up again.

Cindi (SeeDavid)-

I guess my response to you would be that I hope today's kids can look back on their childhood memories twenty to thirty years from now and have great memories of Dayton as we do.

tlturbo-

Thanks for sticking up for me. I always try to stay on topic, and NO, I wasn't bashing Dayton. I was just passing along my impressions from my recent visit.

Curt-

As far as I'm concerned, no apology necessary. I would not have been aware of the situation had you not said something; and yes, it did need to be said. You are doing a great service for current and former residents of Dayton and more importantly, you provide a forum that we derive quite a bit of enjoyment from. That requires no apology.

There's a big costume party each year in the Oregon District. It's next Saturday, the 31st.

The Creeper is still out and about. He was signing autographs at Foy's costume store in Fairborn and hosts a yearly horror movie fest at the Cinema in Englewood.

Other than that, it's just the usual haunted houses, hayrides and corn mazes.

Hi all,
It's been some time since I posted. I went to Belmont High School, class of 1963 (old). Did anyone else go there, and is there any reunion you know about for that year? I have never attended one. By the way,I have a novel out that tells about my life as a musician in Dayton. It's called "Dalton Shores"

I am trying to find out if there are any films from the Uncle Orrie show in the 60s that would be stored somewhere. My dad was part of the Gentry Brothers group ( Rockabilly ) in the day and they were on the show and our family has been hoping to find a way to get a copy of the appearance. If anyone could help me..it would be appreciated. They were inducted in the Rockabilly hall of fame for the song "Swankey"

Heading home for the holidays to "Little D" (Dayton). Looking forward to lots of Christmas fun with the family. I have now lived here in the "Big D" (Dallas)longer than I lived in Dayton which was about 25 years. Although I am proud to be a "naturalized" non-native Texan, I still think of Dayton as my true home.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to all who write and read these posts. You have no idea how good it is to be able to travel back to the good old days of my childhood in Dayton with just a few mouse clicks.

Curt-A special thanks goes out to you my friend, for all the blood, sweat, and tears that go into making this site such a treasure. I am very pleased you made your fund raising goal and want you to know you can count on your friends here in the Lone Star State to kick in on all your future fund raising drives. You are what Dayton is all about-good people that come from a great city! Have a very joyous Christmas and a wonderful year in 2010!

I am trying to remember a cafeteria style restaurant
in North Dayton. My parents went there when I was really young. I remember the waitress carrying our trays upstairs to a dining area. It was a cool place to eat. Also for the guys who talked about St. Helen's. Its still a big thing for Riverside and the funnel cakes are still delicious!

Some of you have mentioned Dayton radio from the 1960's and 1970's.

If the moderators of this website will permit, you can get a dose of what radio was like in Dayton during that time at the Media Page of the Dayton Broadcasters Hall Of Fame website at the following address:

Wildbill66 - these places have been discussed quite a bit by those of us that hung out at them. I spent many hours at the Country Kitchen, Keowee Frisches and N Main Parkmore ALso several of the clubs mentioned.

Do a search on "Dayton in the 60's & 70's" part 1 & 2 for whatever one you want. And yes, that was a great time - late 60's - muscle cars, good clubs and lots of females.

What a great site and thread! I've seen many mentions of Marion's and Cassano's. It is a must to request the "old ovens" when ordering at Marion's. As for Cassano's, and I worked there in HS, it pains me to say that they are nowhere near what they used to be. BUT, there is an old school Vic Cassano's Pizza King independantly operated in Fairfield near Jungle Jims. It uses the ingredients closer to the old days and only uses the hearth ovens instead of the modern conveyor belt nonsense. It is as if you've timewarped when you go there.

Now I have a question: I seem to remember some sort of nursery/garden center type place on 725 at Mcewen, where Saturn/Subaru is now, long before Centerville Cinemas, YMCA/WTRC, or Saturn were there. Anyone remember this? Have a name?

Hello all, I have been missing in action for a while and deleted my posts because I had picked up a stalker who has since been neutralized. As I explained to Curt it was a guy I arrested many years ago for grand lArceny. I did not want him to pick up clues about my family so I freaked and pulled down everything off the net that I could.
In any case, I have started that police procedural novel set in Huber Heights that some of you might remember me speaking of. I must say that this site is a great help in remembering how things were, and seeing s how the time-set is 1995; a big help in referencing what the Greater Dayton Area looked like around then. I am trying to convey to the reader what the area was and is (in one flashback I tell the story of a (FICTIONAL!) Miami Villa boy who worked for his "dream car" from age 13 and died racing it on Rip-Rap Road, and there are references to the Stepp gang, plant closings etcetera) and believe me, if this novel ever sees the shelf of a Borders, DHBOL will have a special place of honor in the "Acknowledgments" page.
I have so far completed the "prologue"; ChapterI : Homecoming; and am 3/4 way through Chapter II : The Territory. I love Modern Scientific Technology, as the word processing program I have makes it so easy to change things (I recently changed my hero's girlfriend's name from "Barbara" to "Amy").
The working title is "The Peterson Investigation"; lthough right this red-hot second I have only a vague idea who Peterson is or what the investigation is about. My hero is a retired DC Homicide detective whose friend from Wayne is now HHPD's Chief and who asks him to come lead the invetigation section of the Huber police. So whatever Peterson has been up to - or even just who Peterson is - will be discovered by me right along with my main character. A lot of you guys can consider yourselves sort of "confidential informants"
Oh and thanx, rosewoodroyal for the info on a Cassano's that still uses the hearth ovens. Anything "baked" on a conveyor belt is not pizza. Not in my book.

I occasionally think of the John Bar if I happen to pass the building that housed it. (Now a VFW, if I recall.) I always thought it was one of the weirdest ideas ever for a bar, and frankly kind of disgusting. I remember the booths were made from bath tubs cut in half lengthwise, the bar stools were commodes, and featured drinks had names like The Plunger. A little too weird for me.

JeffN asked "Where is the old school Cassano's?". Well I just returned from a trip to Dayton. I hadn't been there in 20 years. I went to the Cassano's on Indian Ripple (I had never been to that specific restaurant before, all the other Cassano's I used to eat at have closed). I ordered a supreme pizza and it was spot on what we used to eat when I was a kid.

Apparently there are some Cassanos franchises still around which remain faithful to the hearth ovens and Mom Donisi's original recipes. I am going to be coming to Dayton in a few months to research the above-mentioned novel, and I will try both the Fairfield Cassanos and now, the Indian Ripple one.

Just BTW I had tried for years to get one local restaurant whose owners were willing to accomodate me, to try and duplicate the taste of the original Cassanos "Submarine Sandwich". By George, I think I have it! It's ham, salami, bologna, and the "lunch meat" we knew as "{pickle-pimento loaf"; Mozzerella and Provelone, pickled banana pepper rings, and Cassano's Pizza sauce in a thin spread. (Ragu plain is about as close as I could get, it needs a bit of punching up with garlic and oregano). Toast them in the oven and you get as close to the original Cassanos Submarine as any ex-pat is likely to reproduce in his own kitchen. Hail Cassanos!

"The proof is (definitely) in the taste" of an old time original Cassano's sub. Don't forget to burn the edges, to authenticate.

Cassano's is definitely "back" in terms of quality and authenticity. Having made my mouth water while writing this, I "do" have to admit that Cassano's can't touch a pizza from "Joes, Airway", No way, no how. Try one when you get back.... at the top of Airway Rd. near Smithville Rd.. Dayton's best pizza.
Good luck with the novel, sounds cool.
