I did not live there, but I did live one block away, on Knecht Drive. I went to Loos School, where many of the kids from Shawen Acres went also. I have an early life memory of a football field in the rear of "the orphanage", at Merrimac and Ashwood. My father would take us to ball games there. I don't remember if the players were from the home or not, or even what kind of games that were played. It was all taken out around 1968 for new construction. Shawen Acres had their own hospital back then. It was like a little city. I have a couple of images that I'd be pleased to share. Send your email address to me at liveandlearn@woh.rr.com

Marck1957,

I went to Corpus Christi grade school. When I was in 8th grade (1965-66), our CYO football team played a scrimmage game against Our Lady of Mercy at the football field in the rear of Shawen Acres. It’s now 44 years later, and even though I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning, I can still remember the score of that game – we won 14-0. Although we drove past Shawen Acres all the time, I think that’s the only time I was ever on the Shawen Acres grounds. It’s amazing what one can recall from one’s childhood.

Thomas6, I lived in shawen acres in the fifies and early sixties. i havent went back but would like to have pics also. I hate to say it but my memories of the place were not as great as yours. My favorite memory was dancing in the gym. What cottage were you in? I need to go back and see the place. Is the swimming pool still there?

thomas6, I didn't grow up at Shawn Acres but just wondered if you by any chance knew any of the following people? Jim Dishman, Otis Mundabaugh, Paul Savage and possibly Salley Poe.

so dan i am going to have to find your book,i guess if life was as mine was as a child, shawen acres, was heaven, natually judy i was in 11 when i first arived and then on to 5 for many years, and i am also writing about my exsperience there,it seems a bit fairytale like at times but like i said where i came from to there was quite a change for the better,no the pool is gone the football field all but the cottages and front seem to be there,so judy do you remember the movie theatre, the stage in the gym and i did a lot of one kid plays, the midnight swims at 8,the skating rink, roller in the summer, ice in the winter, and this is not a racist thing,it was what it was but we were seperated from the "colored kids" and had "colored cooks"that were all women but the food was so great,it took me a long time to realize what was going on and then came the day when they moved to desegragate and moved "a colored kid"into cottage 5 what a day that was any way i'm rambling

MikeH - No Mike I didn't live there but I visited Sheron often. I sold him most of his radio equipment and I also spent some time with him at his place at grand Lake St Marys in the summer. I designed and printed his QSL cards that he traded with other radio operators around the world. That must have been era of 1963 to 1979(?).

I'm sure that I saw you one time or another then as I had been to Pops' place at St, Marys many times. I knew some of his other friends as well: Leroy Gillaim, Don Porter, Bill Simpson. He'd go to the pool room at the Northtown Shopping Center also. I actually left Shawn Acres in 1968.

Hello everyone,

I lived at Shawn Acres (I can't even remember the spelling anymore) from the age of 3 - 5 and at 10 - 12 and again from 13 - 15 from early 60's (born in 59) and in the 70's. I also went to Loos School for a bit. While I can't say that all of my memories are fond, I remember a cottage Mom and Pop named Pennington and most of the time they were pretty nice to us. At 10 years old, I remember walking around picking up pop bottles and giving them to the cottage Mom at cottage 1 and she would pay us with brownies, fudge, cookies and other sweets. It later became a pretty mean place with Troutman's took over running the place and there were law suits going on and accusations that they were running prostitution rings out of there after I left. All of my Brothers and Sisters grew up there and only this past year have I been able to find and get in touch with most of them. We were the Abney's but I was finally adopted in 1975 when I was 15 and changed my name to my adoptive family.

If anyone would like to share photo's or stories about our lives there, you can reach me at timturner@tnturner.net or through my web site at www.timnturner.com. By the way, I didn't turn out too bad - I went into the Army and served 14 years as an Airborne Ranger in the Infantry and got out in 94. I now work as an HR & Recruiting Manager for a Subsea Engineering company in Houston and I know that I can handle anything life throws at me, simply because at one time...I was an orphan there.

Gob Bless

Hi guys- I was there from 1967-1971 with my sisters Diane and Sandra Couch. Diane and another girl Karen Gardner made local news from a bad beating from a staff member there. We retuned there in 2008 and took pictures and went in cottage 8 and saw pictures of kids who were there, perhaps some of you may be in some. I will try to post some of them. The place is big, but not as big as I remembered as a child.

I don't remember as much as my sisters but I remember enough that makes me wonder where in the world they got some of the people that worked there. Some of the buildings we were able to see in from outside really shows the renovation that is needed. I'de hate to see it torn down when there are people that have a lot of memories here. Does anyone remember me or my sisters? I believe Diane lived in cottage 8.

I have searched and searched for a way to get back in touch with "my family" at Shawen Acres. I was in cottage 7. Name then was Diane Christopher. I went to Loose school, 6th, 7th and 8th. I was there from 1965-1969. I had a sister named Debbie who is deceased. I remember Richard Kouts. I remember the beating of the two girls. I also knew Mike and Tommy Wheeler, Gary Burton, Telitha Miller, Dean and Doug Watkins. I do have some pictures of the place. Not many, but there is a picture of Richard Kouts in one I think. I have a picture of the front of the place and a snow castle I built behind cottage 7. If anyone wants to contact me my email is Dctcb5@aol.com.

If you are looking for records of the children in Shawen Acres, Mr. Aldman, (think that was his name) who was in charge of Shawen Acres, kept all the records of every child, their case records, everything that was ever written about them, down to who visted them,( I think I'm right about the visitations. ) The records are at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton and they are on micro film, so you have to go there to access your information. I live in Georgia and I emailed the AFB and they told me that they couldn't do the research in the archives, but I could come do it myslef. At this time I'm unable to do so, but I hope you will be able to find the info you need.

I have always wanted to have a reuinion of the children who were at SA. I have been trying to find a best friend of mine named Telitha Jean Miller for years. As I got ready to go to sleep, my mind was racing remembering so many other children. A lot of stories to tell here. My life before SA was a hard one, my mother was an alcoholic and was at "Wayne Ave", and I think while I was in SA she had a son, I found the necklace that they put around the babies neck when they were born, it was blue with Christopher on the beads, so the saga continues. Would love to hear more.

I went on line and looked up some information on SA and in doing so I found the story how Mr. Altman kept the files on the children. Can't remember the site as it was some years ago, but maybe it would be listed under his name in the history section. He had a lot to do with the donations and running the home. Do you remember the big glass window in the main office? You could look down at the basketball court and the stage. Do you remember the black boy, about 16 or 17 who broke his neck on the trampoline? I was there when he tried to do a double flip. It was sad to say the least.

Thomas6 I don't recall the boys name, I do remember he was a good kid, it was a traumatic time for me because I saw someone die right in front of me. The friend I am looking for was in cottage 7 with me, she was my age and walked with me every day to Loos school. At our 8th grade grad. Telitha sang and I gave the speech.
Shawen Acres for some of us was scary at first, but then you realized everyone was there because they didn't have anywhere else to go. Then a feeling of kinship grew between a lot of the kids.
Do you remember the 10 cents you got for allowance? If you were older you got 20 and 30 cents? Then they would open the little candy store for you to spend your allowance? You would only get shoes and clothes twice a year, Easter and the beginning of the school year. I just thank the Lord that Shawen Acres, in the good days was there for all of us.

ShaSha - Sorry, but I had to delete your second message. You wrote about something that happened to someone who is still alive, and mentioned them by first and last name, and they may not want that information known to the public. I understand that it was public information and in the newspapers, but it is not something known in general by the public and I must error on the side of the person/people you mentioned not wanting it brought to the surface again. That being said, if you have a specific date and subject that you want looked up in the newspaper, you can contact the Dayton Metro Library and they will search for you. If the date is not specific, then you can contact the Montgomery County Genealogical Society at carolynjburns@woh.rr.com and they can help you do a search for the information, for a charge of course.
I hope you understand.

Hello, I went to Shiloh school and had friends who lived at Shawen Acres: Brenda Brown, Karla and Phil Bonner. Do any of you know them? Would really love to catchup with Brenda Brown in particular. We lost touch in high school. Shiloh kids were sent to Meadowdale and our African-American friends at Shawen Acres were sent to a different high school, Roth or Dunbar. It was 1967.

It has been great to read all these postings! I did not grow up there but my older sister, Judith Blair, worked there in the early 1960s while she was a UD student. She and I and 2 of our cousins sang together then and Judi organized a show which happened on the stage in the gym. The "headliners" were Sonny Flarharty and his band and I forget how it happened but the drummer fell off the stage that night! I remember the residents dancing and being a really appreciative audience. If anyone remembers Judi, I'll let her know.

I grew up at 217 Fernwood, went to E.J. Brown and Colonel White, class of 1969. My mom, Lois Crews, drove a school bus. She drove to and from Shawn Acres many times. My older brother worked there on the playground one summer. I knew Don Hawker and since my mom knew Don and drove the kids to so many places I was welcome on the grounds at any time. I played there in the gym, swam at the pool and all over the grounds outside. I remember the name Anthony Bonner but can not place his face. I loved going there over the years and had many friends there just can not remember many names.

To Penny, in response to your Oct. 11 posting,
A great place to start with your questions is the basement local history department of the Dayton Public Library downtown. The employees love to help with such queries. Among other things, they'll lead you to Dayton city directories and census records. And it can be much easier than you may think. Good luck!
