I grew up in the Belmont area and remember Kelly Coffee very well.I think I was about 14 and used to go listen to him practice with my brother,Good times!
The "Pictiorian Skiffuls" was my brother-in-law,Vondal Moore's band. Here is what he says
"Vondal and The Vondells" was the name of my first group and we changed names and some members of the band at time of the English Invasion to form the group "Pictorian Skiffulls."
I got a lot of exposure in the mid 60's when teen clubs were popular. Some of the larger teen clubs (Forest Park Arena in Dayton Ohio), would have upwards of 1000 kids on Friday and Saturday nights. Our rival band at that time was "Rick and The Raiders," later to become the "The McCoys" of "Hang on Sloopy" fame.

While singing in Los Angeles, Hugh Jarret of the Jordonaires told me if I dyed my hair black I could do a great "Elvis" Impersonation. A dress tribute to "Elvis" was added to our show named "Tribute to Elvo Parsley," under fear of copyright infringement. Being heavy into martial arts and having the vocal style of my idol, it was natural and a very successful part of my show. At that time we knew of no one else doing a dressed Elvis show
This show gave way to other "Tributes" performed by me including Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney, Tom Jones, and many more. My group was called "Captain Kool and the Cadillac's" and our tributes were part of that entertainment package.

Vondal and my sister live in Lady Lake Florida now and he has a production company. The web address is
http://www.vondal-productions.com/Home.htm

I met Vondal in the eighties when he owned the "Music Man" club in the shopping center at the corner of Dorothy Lane and South Dixie. His house band was "Country Earth".
Frank Myers, one of the members of Country Earth went on to win a grammy for writing the song "I Swear" and he also wrote many other award winning songs including,"Just You And I"by Crystal Gayle and Eddie Rabbit. He is still writing and living in Nashville. He has a website
www.frankmyersmusic.com/bio.html

There have been many great bands through the years in Dayton and I was lucky enough to have heard many of them!

Jan - I've never tried to search for vintage music, so I don't really have any idea. I have the album on vinyl LP and cassette. I would part with the cassette (assuming I can find it), but not the LP. By the way, I live in Orlando, so possibly someone still living in Dayton would have some idea of where to find vintage local music, and respond to this posting.

Dan,
My brother is Tim Bryant.I wish I could remember all the names of the people he ran around with.It has been so many years and I was just a "hanger on" when he would let me go with him.
I do remember that once we went to some garage and Kelly was trying to think of a name for his backup singers.I remember everyone laughing at all the stupid names that people were suggesting.Lord,I hate getting old and forgetting all the good stuff!

Settler36 - Re: H. Bomb Ferguson

He was playing blues/jazz clubs in Cincinnati for a lot of years - along with Big Ed Thompson. Vaious wigs and no teeth - he looked like an H-Bomb mushroom cloud :-) He passed away within the last couple of years. Good showman.

I also remember Sunuva from both high school dances (I definitely remember one at Carroll high when I was dating a girl who went there) in the 70s as well as playing gigs in a club down on Brown street - forget the name. Decent local hard rock.

I really appreciate this site and the great posts. In the day, The Ohio Players were definitely the best for me. BTW, Dayton is know as the home of funk. I've lived in Michigan for over 25 years and even Detroiters acknowledge this.
Best Dayton band of all times? The Breeders--another great girl band.

Someone mentioned the Debbie Smith Band (on Homegrown II). I went to high school with Debbie, and man could that girl sing. Had kind of a Phoebe Snow/Janis Joplin vibe going on. Wonder if she kept up her singing?

One of the best bands in the Dayton area in the 70's was
Green Lyte Sunday. They played at the Livingroom on N.Dixie back when it was a decent place to go.

I remember the name Pictorian Skiffulls. I never got to hear them because I was always playing (1964-1966) in a band called The Intruders from Middletown. WING booked us at Forest Park Arena, LeSourdsville Lake and Kettering Skating Rink. We were Billy Joe Royal's band for the night when he played at Forest Park Arena when Down In The Boondocks first came out. That club was a great place to play. I heard Rick and the Raiders there - they warmed up for The Strangeloves (I Want Candy). I heard the Byrds there too. I remember some other Dayon band names too: The Stumps, and B.C. and The Cavemen.

I remember hearing the name Tom and the Tempests too. I never got to hear them either. Our band only played in Dayton maybe 6 times a year. Great memories playing at Forest Park Arena. I remember driving up there and a brand new song by the Rolling Stones had just been released that day, and WING was playing it about every 10th song- Satisfaction. That wa a fun place to play, as like you said, there was a sea of teenagers in there that loved to rock.

Great memories, best time of my life from 1965 - 1967 with local bands. I was in a band called the MODS. Probably not remembered by many, but we played most of the smaller venues; The Village in Miamisburg, Icelandia, Blue Moon Skate Club in Xenia, Piqua 36 Skate Club, Armory in Eaton, and Preble County Fair. Also hung out a lot at the Sound Shop in Miamisburg. Hard to believe it's been 45 years, wow!

DATES xxx was tremendously influential in my youth - still have the flyer where they played with Human Switchboard (will scan for MARYAGNES and BSPAHR). My KPR band sorta covered MACY's (new name tho) - and I still have that cassette. Still think that music was/is relevant. Would love to hear from anyone who can relate. MARYAGNES, are you still playing?

Wone...Battle of the bands..."The Warlocks" ...Lp named "The Dayton Scene"...band consisted of Stanley Malone, Ricky Casey, Eddie Broyles, Jerry Thacker and Dickie Bodine ....They were one of the twelve bands chose to be on the album.
If anyone has a copy of this album..Mid 60's....I'd be interested in buying it !

Eddie dove off of a bridge and broke his neck and lived his life in a rest home...he died a few years back...Stanley and Ricky both passed away last year.

Yuk, yuk,yuk.

I'm surprised at only one mention of Bob Pollard in this whole thread...Guided By Voices has been at it since about 1982 or '83, in various different incarnations, and the line-up that is currently recording and touring is the same group of guys that broke big in the mid 1990s...Bob also has his solo records and also makes albums with other groups of musicians, under vaious names (Circus Devils, Mars Classroom, Lifeguards, and Boston Spaceships, to name a few)- he released seven albums of original material in 2011 alone, and two more so far in 2012. Another GBV album is slated to come out in November, I think.

My step-father was in a cover band in the late '80s called The Barking Spyders (later changed the name to Hindsight)- their biggest gig was on Courthouse Square in 1989, opening for Dave Mason.

Others not yet mentioned- Cage, Brainiac- early/mid '90s, again.

Heh heh...yeah, I was in my late teens then, and the term 'barking spider' must have been passe even then, because I remember having to be told what it referred to. (And for anybody else who may not know, don't sweat it. It's not worth explaining here!).

Anyway, no, they covered a lot of classic rock stuff; Steppenwolf, Van Morrison, Beatles, and a lot of others...it was a good time for me, getting to go to bars when I was 16 to see them play, because I was 'with the band'.

Oh, and just within the past year, my stepfather gave me a CD of the gig at Courthouse Square that I mentioned above. They recorded a few of their shows from time to time.

Does anyone remember a band called"Livin'End"? This was the first time I ever saw a live band. They were practicing in the drummer's basement. My sister was dating him,and our parents wouldn't let her go unless I went too.He later went on to play with Blue Oyster Cult for a time.Another early memory is seeing "Jonathan and Leigh"practicing at a friend's house. I found their cd online called "Third and Main. Someone mentioned Soul Inc.,I found a publicity photo of them a while back, not sure where it's at now.Over the years I've seen McGuffy Lane several times, and think they're great. Lottsa talent from the Dayton area.

Randy and the Viceroys, from Wilbur Wright, 1964-1965. Nelson Calloway, Marvin Smith, and "Cold Sweat" at the Diamond Club and the Rat Cellar on Linden, 1969-1970.

The Viceroys became the Forum when I left for College in 1965. Nelson Calloway came from Big Jay Bush and the House Rockers, Marvin Smith came from Marv and Betty and the Triumphs, and Jeff Black on trumpet came from the Magnificent Seven. I played saxophone with both bands and then joined Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders in 1971.

WOW!! Vicki and the Rest!!! Here's the 411 on them:
Vicki Van Winkle-lead singer,a classmate of mine (Fairmont East '66)
Frannie Davis-lead guitar (Fairmont East '67)
Penny Cash-rhythm guitar (Fairmont East '67)
Merry Hill-bass (Julienne)
and
Leslie Cash-drums (Fairmont East '68)

I dated both Penny and Leslie Cash before they started the group and found out a very important thing---you should NEVER EVER date sisters!!!!!!
Leslie got married and moved to Washington State, not sure about "the Rest" of them!

I remember seeing Gary and the Hornets on Skipper Ryle one Sunday morning. They did "Hi, Hi Hazel (Who the devil names a girl kid "Hazel" anymore?) and "Baby, it's You". They were from Franklin, so they were from te Miami Valley, so I guess you could kinda-sorta call them Daytonians. The three were brothers, family name Calvert.

There is a discussion group concerning them on Yahoo, and there aare a few tidbits available among the "urgent message funds available call Bank President Notumbo, Lagos Nigeria" and "Get half price Viagra cheap" spamettes. Among these is the assertation that the brothers aare still around and jamming with local bands around the Southern Ohio area.

Oh yes, this discussion brings back many fond memories.
Some one mentioned the Dave Workman Blues Band. Remember his first band, out of Columbus, the Dantes? They played the local scene frequently. Dave plays around San Francisco these days, I understand.
Anyone remember the Heard? Gerry Morelock on lead; Chuck White, vocals; Joe ?? Bass; Joey Lutz, drums; later Bumpy ??, drums; Danny Goehring, guitar; later another guitarist that I forget his name; last guitarist on board, as I recall, was Lynn Rowe. They played all the teen venues that were around in the mid 60s, battles of the bands, etc. They played lots of Stones and Byrds, and impressed everyone on the local scene by acquiring TWO Rickenbacker 12 strings.
Sad to note that Gerry passed away in Florida, several years back now, the victim of a drunken motorcyclist.

I just found this site yesterday and thought that I would add my two cents. At first I was the drummer for Sonny Flaharty & the Young Americans around 1960. Ray Bushbaum played Wurlitzer piano & Organ, Mike Flaharty played bass, Teddy Eubanks lead guitar and Sonny lead vocal and rythem guitar. Sonny had a number of records and we traveled out of state most weekends. Ray & I left. Sonny joined the Mark V when Susan left. I joined the Mark V and Ray the Excellents. Mike Losekamp left and joined the Cyrkle and Skip Shaman joined the Mark V at the Diamond Club.
Green Lyte Sunday formed when Mike came back and the Mark V split up. They only played the Diamond Club a couple of times.

frogboytim, I googled Gerry's name , read the story about the accident. He is indeed the Gerry Morelock I knew, back in the 70s. We lost touch in 78 when he left for Florida. I didn't know he was killed. Gerry taught me to play the banjo. Thank you for posting.

I remember a lot of the local bands from the late 70s and early 80s mentioned here. Nice to see Mary Agnes from the Dates commenting on here. My brother played bass with a couple of bands, including Pretty Boyzz (I think that's how they spelled it). I was the lead singer for the Debbie Smith Band. I was so lucky to be surrounded by the talented and hardworking guys in that band. I got out of the music scene in late 1987. There were a lot of amazing musicians in the area during those years, some of whom are still performing today.

Commenting back on Paul Goodwins post from 10/26/11, I was the original drummer for BC & The Cavemen. Last band I played with was The Indiana Bicycle Company. Did the Forest Park thing for sure and won some battle of the bands. Last place was The Crystal Ballroom in Greenville. Went on vacation and our organ player (Don Callucci) (sp) joined Trudy and the Hopple Street Exit. Good times back then

Not familiar with any of the local bands except for H'Bomb'Fergusion who played at the Rendevoux Club out on Salem ave. That was back in the early 60's when I would hang there with my friends. Have no idea when the club disappeard or the band. Some of us would go directly from cosmotology school to the club and would still have our uniforms on. Pretty lively place and lots of fun. As I remember it was a nice sized place.Does anyone know when the club closed and what what happened to H"BOMB?

Don't know how young you were but don't forget back then we had 3.2 beer and you could drink that at 18. They stamped your hand when entering. Once 21 you drank high test 6%. Back then you just had fun but at some point became dangerous to be in one and think thats why many clubs vanished. For some it just isn't a fun night out it you can't get involved in a shoot out. Sad commentary but true.
