I think mine would have to be Shroyer Rd. I just read an article that refered to a Parkmoor on Salem Ave. can someone give my memory a kick ?
I remember Frisch's, Hasty Tasty and Charburger on Salem Ave but for the life of me I cant picture a Parkmoor. anybody remember where it was ?
Was it near Good Sam maybe ?

Maybe, I cant remember about the commissary. anybody remember where the old Bluebird Bakery was ? I think it was in that area somewhere.

SteveK: I loved the one on shroyer Rd, they had the cutest girls working there. I can remember cutting through the parking lot as a kid and following the railroad tracks down behind Earl Kreigers wrecking yard. there used to be an old abandoned Hobo Jungle there where we used to hang out.

I wonder why the Parkmoor on N Main at Forest Park isn't on that 1970 directory? I left Dayton in Jan 1972 and before that I was always at the various car hangouts including that Parkmore. Started going there about 1966 with the Pontiac and then with the corvettes and I'd swear it was still there in 1970. Also hung out at the Airways Parkmoor a lot.

TTurbo the Parkmoor on North Main Street ( which by the way, was my favorite as it was right up the Nottingham hill from where I lived ) was not in the 1970 directory because by that time it had closed and became a Ponderosa. I also ate many times at that Ponderosa and remember actually standing in a line and was out the door. "Fast food" steaks were a novelty I guess. The food was good at first but later went downhill.

Thanks Becky for the update. I SURE don't remember the N Main Parkmoor becoming a Ponderosa before I left Dayton in Jan 72. I must have been too busy at the Country Kitchen in Kettering and the Frisches on Keowee to have gone there. I DO remember being there a lot from 67 to 70. Senior moment I guess HA

The Fricker's in Huber has the Parkmoor chicken recipe and serves it on special nights. Here's a link to the DDN article.

It didn't paste in live, you'll have to cut and paste the link.

The Parkmoor building was torn down to build a Ponderosa Steak House. Then it was torn down to build a Rite-Aid.

yes, thats one thing that I remember about Dayton. they were always the "Tear Down" capitol of the world. somebody was always in a rush to tear down and flatten a building even if it was for no other reason than to make a vacant field or a parking lot that nobody ever used.

Riverdale.. I think there was a parkmoor downtown at first and wilkinson ave but it's been gone for years.

Riverdale Rat - Yep, Dayton is famous for tearing things down and puting up parking lots. The Miami Hardware on Salem closed quite a few years ago and now it's a parking lot that never has a car parked there.

seems to me like there was once a Parkmoor there at east 3rd and patterson blvd. it was near the library but that one has been closed for ages. I am not talking about the old white tower, the parkmoor was on the other corner.

ok, I stand corrected on that one. its amazing how much stuff a person can forget over the years. I just came over here by accident and I've already had my brain joggled more in one day than in the past 25 years. I think I love this site it has already resurected more happy memories than I thought possible. riverdale..your keen memory on little details is amazing as a matter of fact all of you guys are amazing. thanks so much.

Riverdale Rat - If there was a Parkmoor at Salem and Superior, it was long gone when I moved to Dayton in 1972. McAllisters Art Supply (now closed) was on one corner and Longfellow school is on another. There is a parking lot (another one) on the NE corner. Maybe that was the location.

By the way, there is or was a local band in Dayton called the Riverdale Rats.

Memory jog here - on 3rd street just past the main library was an Army Navy Surplus store. I used to buy my fishing and water ski stuff there. Across the street somewhere was a burger place that I THINK was a Whimpy's. Am I remembering correct?

Also, as you head out Salem toward the Mall you go up a hill then down toward the mall. At the top of that hill on the right was an IHOP or pancake house or some similar type place. Any idea? Met a great looking gal that worked there around 70-71.

Driver62: The drive-in was on the SW corner of salem katty-cornered from the school. I cant believe I dont remember what it was. I have been there a few times, I remember the counter used to run north/south. never knew about the band, thanks for the Info.

Turbo: yes, the army/navy store was right up from the White Tower on the same side of the street. Combat was a big hit on T.V. back in those days and I used to get a kick out of hanging out in there. They did have a good selection of fishing/camping gear. the burger joint was called Wympee's (white and Green front) it was on the corner of 3rd and Wayne where the #3 and #4 trolleys used to turn.
I vaguely remember the restauraant on salem but I am not sure of the name, I think it was across from the old Catholic home. if memory serves it was a retirement home for nun's

dquartz: There was a bar about a block east of the army/navy store on the same side of the street. it was called the Cincinatti Bar. as I remember it was just a little hole in the wall place. a couple of blocks East on 3rd and across from the Library was another bar called The Oasis Cafe.

As a young boy living in Patterson Park, the Parkmoor on Shroyer Rd was our family eating out spot. I remember sitting in the car with the tray hanging off the window. I remember sitting in the booth inside with the jukebox selectors located on the wall side of the booth. They had the pages you could flip through to pick your music selection. I believe they were chrome. One time, when I was very young, I squeezed the red plastic ketchup dispenser and it must have squirted ketchup six feet up and all over the curtains. I remember the looks on my parents faces as they sprang into action. That was good chicken!

Mark1957: I remember that night, I was sitting in the booth behind you. you still owe me 8 bucks for the dry cleaning bill. (joking of course) your description of the place fits my memory to a Tee. I always said that there was something about that parkmoor that made it more special than the rest, it had it's own personality.

corvettes6: I never knew that Flynt put a club at that location. he must have spent a bundle to remodel. as I remember that was a narrow, dingy old dump. I knew he had put a Hustler club in Dayton but I was thinking it was on the west side of main between 1st and monument. do you know if there is still a bar there where the Cincy/flynt club was ?

there was a mcdonald's that closed and a rally's at salem and superior or close to it. superior is a candatate on the best "rougher" streets list.
was the parkmoor at either of those locations?
a rougher street is one with 10 o/o or more boarded up or torn down houses.

Riverdale Rat - The SW corner of Salem and Superior is directly across the street from the school. The NW corner is katty cornered from the school and where the old McAllisters Art Supply building is. The SW corner is now the 5th District police station.

SteveK: if memory serves, the Cincinatti Bar was a ways past the surplus store, just to the east of where Wayne ave dead ends into 3rd. the last I knew of
Miami Jacobs Business college it was on the 2nd or 3rd floor of some building on Ludlow near 2nd st.

corvettes6: The last thing I knew about Larry Flynt was when I heard that he had opened a hustler club on N Main (i think) I was thinking it was there near where the old White Tower used to be. I know there was once a club near 1st and main called the Talk of the Town. Flynt may have even opened up a few clubs before he started doing the Hustler thing. I know he used to be around Dayton a lot. I am pretty sure that he either worked or had a girlfriend who owned or worked at the old Ruby's Blue Willow Bar on Salem ave. I Remember hearing my dad talk about him. he wasnt too well regarded in certain circles back in those days.

driver62: I just took a trip back there courtesy of Mr. Google. I posted wrong corner direction but the drive in restaurant was katty cornered from the school. McAllisters Art Supply building looks like the same building with some renovations thrown in. as weird as it may sount that little short brick wall that runs around the corner of the building is part of the old restaurant. the indentation where the bushes are is new, that part used to be flush with the sidewalk as did the entrance which now sits back off the street. there were plate glass windows running all along Salem ave. and around the corner up Superior for about 20 feet. I still cant beleive that I am not sure if it was a parkmoor. I have been in that place at least 20 times as a Kid. The SW corner
where the clock is (the 5th District police station) used to be Krogers parking lot. Kroger faced Salem Ave but sit way back off of the street. there was a large parking area in the front of the store.

RRat - Thanks for the info about the Parkmoor or whatever the name was. I've been in McAllisters many times and it could have been a restaurant at one time as the building is fairly narrow and long. To bad they closed or I would have went there and asked what was there before they moved in.

I don't remember a Krogers across the street so that must have been before I moved to Dayton. For the life of me, I can't remember what was at that location before the police station was built.
