Hi everyone, As we head into mid September I wanted to personally thank everyone that has helped with gifts to the site during the last thirty days or so. Debbie Anderson Jim Butler Gem City Circle Walks Steve Grismer John Himes MaryAgnes Mikalauskas Lisa Persons Kathryn Wiford www.invink.com I am pleased to say that between them this group of good people have given a total of $1,035.00. This is a little over a third of the amount DHBO needs to stay online and to add pages for more books/booklets, pictures and, of course, a LOT more pages for our bloggers. I want to include 200 more pages to the site over the next year so that all of the various discussions can be kept online instead of having to delete older ones. This past year has proven to me that people read ALL the posts and answer a few of them as well, some even going back to 2005. For that to happen I do need your help. If you have thought about giving, even a small amount, please do so. Although the campaign officially does not end until December 31st, that is just a guideline, as there are bills due each month that will come up during that time, as well as next year. Thanks in advance for helping me help you enjoy remembering Dayton as it once was and hopefully can be again! (Theme music playing as I slowly fade from the screen)... Now let's get back to Part Two of "Godzilla Conquers the Martins" (Inside joke to those of us who remember Bob 'let's stretch chickee a little looonger' Shreve)

Another big THANK YOU to Steve Grismer, who has written an article and sent in a picture with it that I have put on this site on the Dayton Police "Bank Flyer" - a mystery police car during the 1930s. And for sending in yet ANOTHER donation to take us to $1060.

I am proud to add the name Joanne Granzow to the list of friends you have given to the site. She is part of the group who is helping save the Arcade and has also elected to help DHBO as well. Thanks Joanne!

Today we add the name of Mark Martel, of Martel Art, to those who have been kind enough to help DHBO. Mark is well-known for his work on Ropewalk, a documentary on the history of ropemaking in Xenia, Ohio. Thanks Mark!

This day I am proud to add Robert and Harriet Gaines to this ever-growing list of people who have contributed to DHBO. Although they live in Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Gaines still love the Gem City. Thank you, Robert and Harriet. Your contribution puts DHBO over the halfway mark towards our goal of $3,000!

Hugh Rockoff has been kind enough to come forward and give a contribution to help keep the site up and running for the next year. Because of Hugh and others listed above, DHBO is nearing $2,000 - close to two-thirds of our goal of $3,000.

As the last day of September rolls around I want to thank Jeff Neal for his kindness in contributing what he could to the cause. We need others like Jeff to belly up to the bar so that IRS will see that DHBO gets donations from a wide variety of people who care that we stay online. The more people who contribute, the better it will help us convince IRS that we are important to the community and that we should be allowed 501c3 status. Thanks Jeff!

Wow, I am happy to say that two more friends have stepped foward to contribute to the cause. A large THANK YOU goes out to Terry Littleton (tlturbo) and Rhonda Keene. This brings the number of people who have helped keep the site alive up to 17. Thank you all!

Amazingly, yet another contribution made it under the wire for September. Many thanks to John and Sheryl from Texas, whose donation pushed DHBO over the $1,900 mark. I want to thank everyone once more for giving this month. Although there is still a way to go, I am grateful that I was able to use what I have received so far to pay off bills that were due before the end of the year. Thank you all. Curt

Kudos to Marck Carter, who has given TWICE in the last six months. He saw our need and came through again for DHBO. Thanks, Marck. With people like yourself as fans of the site, it will hopefully be up for years...

Many thanks to Jeff Jones (whom most of you know as maxed out on this site), for coming through and taking DHBO online closer to its goal. Jeff is a regular to the site, having posted well over 100 times and is good at jogging people's memories of Dayton's great past. Thanks Jeff!

I am happy to announce that John Neiser has come through for DHBO with a nice contribution that takes us to within less than $40 to reach $2000. Let's do our best to hit that mark before the end of October if we can! Thanks Curt

It is my pleasure to announce that, with Richard Dryden's help, DHBO has broken the elusive $2,000 mark. We are now only $960 from our goal and have around three months left to reach it! I want to again thank everyone who has given early. DHBO just paid a $479.76 bill that was due in two weeks, something I would have been hard-pressed to do without all of your help. Thank you!

Hi all, Well, what a way to wake up in the morning! I can't sleep and so, as usual, I get on the internet to come here and do some work. Imagine my surprise and delight to find that Fred Sinder was kind enough to leave me a contribution during the night. Thank you, kind sir!

Hey Curt, How about a minor explanation of what these expenses are - in general that is. Reason I'm asking is that maybe some of us might be able to provide that service for free. Example - you pay xxx a month for a server - maybe one of us has a server that could host the site for free - who knows. Just a thought. Terry

Some of the higher expenses are: CityMax- the host of the web site. Which I use because I do not have to know html code to use, comes with a blog site I don't have to set up, uploads pictures and services them, has a gift shop that tracks sales and allows credit card use (which I have stopped for the moment but will pick up again in the coming year). PicoSearch -a search engine that allows people to search my site without ad pop-ups and reindexes without me having to do anything but set up a schedule. It also tells me the number of hits, pages visited most often, what people searched for, waht they found, what they didn't (which helps me decide what I should concentrate on placing on the site). HostMonster - hosts the audio interviews, which eats up a LOT of Gigabytes of space, but also has an unlimited amount of space I can use and also does not charge for bandwidth usage (same goes for CityMax). RoadRunner - High speed internet service to upload and download items, as well as access to DHBO. Xerox of items to be placed on DHBO. At 15 cents a copy at the library, this can add up quickly. The radio scripts of Great Days in Dayton I put up lately cost me $15.75, for instance. Some books have cost over $50 for copies. But I couldn't even touch the originals as far as buying them outright, as some can run $125+. Many of the items cannot be taken out of the library, so that stops going somewhere cheaper. I recently bought a laptop and a scanner and have used them to scan some of the photographs at the library, which I plan to start putting on DHBO at the beginning of next year. Mailing - Much of the items you see here is typed by volunteers. I cannot mail the items media mail because they are not bound, but are loose pages. This cost has reached as high as $100 a year. This year will probably be closer to $80. This year I bought special equipment to convert cassette tapes of the interviews to MP3 format. Again, I could not take the tapes home, but had to stay at the museum to transfer them - thus the special equipment. Hopefully this will also come in handy for possibly conducting present day oral interviews. That's just some of the expenses of DHBO each year. I might be able to do it less expensively if I would learn html code, but that isn't in the cards. I barely have time to do it the way it works now - WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) method. I hope this helps explain some of the cost of doing business and why I appreciate every donation that comes in. Curt

Connie Ward Lee, of Texas, is our latest contributor. Amazingly, she is the fourth person from Texas to help out this year. And out of the 25 people who have been kind enough to help us so far, over half of them no longer live in Dayton. Other states include Missouri, Florida, Kentucky and New Jersey. This shows that Dayton must have been a great place to live because people from here never forget!

Jemey Ivory has joined the ever growing list of contributors to DHBO. The total has now jumped over the $2100 mark with about 11 weeks to go before the end of the year. This means DHBO needs to raise about $100 a week to reach its goal of $3,000. With the help of people like Jemey and others mentioned above, I think it can be done! Curt

Today I want to thank a certain family for their contribution to DHBO. Although they want to remain nameless, I can't pass up this opportunity to tell them how grateful I am for their help. Even though the deadline is fast approaching (Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away!)with your generous contribution DHBO is much closer to realizing its goal. Thank you!

A very nice donation came in the mail from Carolyn J. Burns today. Many of you might know her for her site here. http://www.carolynjburns.com/ She is a great genealogist who has helped many Daytonians find their roots. Thanks, Carolyn!

My thanks to John Neiser, who is helping out for the second time this year. He is the FIFTH person who has contributed TWICE in the last few months in order to help DHBO stay open. If you have not given yet, please consider doing so now. While it is greatly appreciated, those who have already given should not be asked to do so again. If you enjoy this site please come forward and help. There are only six weeks left in the year. I promise to continue to add to the site and try and make it an even more fun place to play, but I can't do it without all of you. So dig deep, give a dollar if that is all you can spare, and try and help DHBO reach its goal. Time is running out. Thanks to all, Curt

If you look back to September 19, 2009 you will see me mention Robert and Harriet Gaines, of Missouri, who made a very generous contribution to DHBO. Seeing that time was getting short, these wonderful people came through and gave yet again, putting us WELL over the goal we had set for the year. Due to their generosity, and to all of those of you who gave this year, DHBO will be able to stay online and will also be able to move forward with a number of exciting projects in 2010. Expect to see a lot more pictures, plus a number of articles by my favorite writer, Roz Young, online. Thank all of you for caring so much. I will again do my best to continue to gather and share information on the city we all love so much - DAYTON, OHIOGratefully yours, Curt Dalton

As the year winds down, donations continue to pour into DBHO. I want to thank a donor who wants to remain unnamed for helpng with a nice contribution, the second one given this year. Lisa Kell, who types up a lot of what you see here and is working on a special project for DHBO, also condtributed. As did Steve Grismer, who has several writings and pictures of the Dayton Police Department online here at DHBO and who has been kind enough to give for the THIRD time this year. Many thanks to you all for your generous contributions. I promise they will be put to good use in 2010! Happy Holidays! Curt
