There's a small diner on Third st called Abner's and my deceased husband swore by their breakfasts and especially the bisquits and gravy. Have no idea when it opened its doors but do know its still open and does a steady business.

A deceased friend of mine (Roy; ex-owner of ex-Roy’s Lounge on Smithville now DBA “Bahama Mamas”) claimed that Abner’s had a sign somewhere in the place honoring him. The sign supposedly (I never verified this) said “NO ROYS ALLOWED”.
I also recall some story about some detectives roughing someone up in there…..might have been Roy.

I remember The Dog House as being on North Main just a ways past Forrest Ave on the east side of the Street (1600-1700 block maybe) If memory serves it was open 24 hours and really wasn't someplace you wanted to be after bar closing time on the weekends.

Roge, the Dog House on E. Third St. and S. Horton St.,was built in 1965, and was managed by a man named John, who also had a catering truck called Johnny's Lunch Wagon. I used to mow the grass for him and pull weeds in the parking lot. It later became the Breakfast Nook, and my sister in law was a waitress/cook there. The Dog House on N. Main St. was next to the old Bonded gas station in the N. Main and Burton St. area.

I remember eating at the E. 3rd St. Doghouse (now Abner's) in the late 60's. Within the last year I had a takeout egg/cheese sandwich from there. A few years ago, I guy hit my work truck while he was pulling into Abner's. He fought the charge and I had to appear as a witness for the city (he lost). It used to open 24/7, but I think they close around 11 or 12PM now.
