Lived in Kettering but knew kids from oakwood. Can remember dances and sock hops that took place on weekends and loved to go. Interior was beautiful. Some years later a large pool built and memberships were needed. By that time I was married and those days were over. That's when wonderly park was frequented again to take my small children.

LMD- I didn't get to the Oakwood Y often, but was there one wintry night with a group of friends. I don't remember the guys name (he had red hair, that's all I remember), but he had his dad's brand new Chrysler convertible. He left the dance, spinning his tires on the snowy pavement. He got one block south of the Y and spun out, hitting the light pole that was in the boulevard of that cross-street. We all heard the noise and left the dance to go see what happened. Fortunately, he was not hurt, but his dad showed up, and you could tell the worst was yet to come, when they got home.

Prior to 1953 I spent almost every day playing soft ball or just hanging out .Dean Dooley and Bill Halloway were adult leaders and coaches. I believe they were both teachers at Wilbur wright. Many open houses after football games. It not take long to get enough kids to play any sport.Try it today.

I remember when I was a kid there in the 60's they had a big steel merry-go-round that kids would run and push the thing and jump on. You could get it to go really fast. Some poor child slipped and got caught underneath that monster and broke their arm. I remember bone sticking out. Also saw another compound fracture when another kid fell off the top of Oakwood stadium onto the pavement.
Remember Saturday morning kids movies in the auditorium shown with a projector and screen. Model building class down in the basement. Dennis Papish worked there.

Funny thing about that steel merry-go-round you always made friends because one kid could hardly move the thing,Does any one remember having to put a popcicle stick under the pedal on the water fountain to get it to work?

I think I took my scuba certification lessons in their pool one winter about 1969? Did our final checkout dive when it got warmer at some lake out past Xenia where everyone went diving.
