Growing up in the Dayton area in the 1950, (I was born in 1946) Gallahers was the drug store I remember at first, and as I relayed in other postings, I grew up in Belmont and of course Gallahers was right in the middle of it across the alley from the Theatre. In 1951, my family moved from Colwick & Martel in Belmont out to Kettering on Ackerman Blvd. We were within walking distance of Town and Country Shopping Center, and in the middle of it was an alley that cut the shopping center in 2 and led to the stores out behind it. On one side of the alley was Kresge's 5& 10, and the other side of the alley was Gray's Drug Store. It seems to me at first there wasn't that many of them, but of course there were parts of Dayton we never traveled to much, so I'm not really sure how big a chain they were. I do remember there was also one in Van Buren Shopping Center as well, and those are the only two that come to mind. Maybe there was one in Breitenstraters ? Anyway I thought it would be a good subject to chat about. They only thing I remember about them was they seemed a little more modern than Gallahers, and not as personal and homey.

If I recall correctly. There was a Gray Drugs in the shopping center at Salem Ave & Shiloh Springs Rd. in Trotwood. Right across from where the mall use to be. There was a Rink's next door to it. And I'm pretty sure that there was a breezeway that connected the two stores. So you could go from one to the other without going outside. I'm a little too young to remember Gallagher's.

That sounds about right Mark. When Gallaghers went out, Grays took some of them over, but not too long after that, they went out and I'm not sure who came in. By then, 1968, I moved out of Ohio and lost track.

town and country was much different years ago and your correct about the mini side streets. Kresges was on the corner and remember as a kid going in there around Easter and seeing all the baby chicks dyed in spring colors running around in pens. Thankfully that was banned a few years later. Metropolitan,Thals were up where Trader Joes are now. Penny's at other end where Steinmart is. Kind of forget what all was up that way as other side of Shroyer was a shopping mall called Eichleburger center where barber and beauty shops were. There always has been large grocery stores of some kind there where the big Krogers now is. Also think there was a WT Grant on that side . Back side of Town and country had a post office, fire station, restaurants, record store. So convenient for us all. Still go up there but just isn't the same. But then again neither am I.

Well, since there's an important point in here, namely that Grays/Greys took over some Gallaher's locations, let me again mention it's Gallaher's, not Gallagher's, so it will come up if someone runs a search. No offense meant -- I have a lot of stuff not too correct.

Gallaher's. Oops! Trolleyfan did say Gallaher's. Don't ask me how I got Gallagher's.

Mark1984,

Don't worry about it. Maybe 50 years ago I said "Gallagher's" in the presence of an attorney who saw an opportunity to teach someone to be specifically correct. He carefully pointed out that there's no "g" in it. I was mortified.

I wonder how we came to pronounce it with a "g"? I know I did until this post.

I guess I always mis-pronounced it. I called it Gal Ege Gers. LOL. My only argument is "I was a kid" :)

There was a Gallagher's drug store on Salem Ave near Miami Hardware. Then there was a Gray's Drug Store in Miracle Lane Shopping Center off of Salem Ave.

It's kind of funny when you think about it. I now live in Atlanta Georgia, and have had since the early 70's. Atlanta was no different back then than Dayton was. We had a couple local chain drug stores that most people went to. I think one was Rexall, an the only National Chain was Walgreens. Now it is almost 40 years later and Atlanta and Dayton has for the most part the same drug store chains. We have CVS, Rite Aid, a couple Revcos, although most are gone, and of course one of the big changes is Walmart and Kroger now has big Drug Departments. I prefere the local smaller chains. They had personality and actually cared. And they call this progress ! (_________ fill in your own expletive) LOL

We still have all locally . The old Duffs cafeteria in Kettering became a rite aid for years and was within walking distance for my mother. It finally went out. There are numerous smaller pharmacys opening up around town but no idea how their doing but some even deliver. Have been surprised that many you mention still are open as they always had the higher prices on everything and still do. FYI don't know if Meijers still has this but many antibiotics that are usually prescribed are free.
