We bought a beautiful house at the corner of Oxford Ave. and Rosedale Dr. in September of 1959, when our youngest (of five) was six months old. The house faced south. Across the street was a kosher meat store and a general grocery; a new building was built to house a laundromat and small beauty shop. Our children went to Jefferson School.

Our house was finished in 1913, just as the Great Flood occurred. Mary Louise and Walter Rankin married that April and moved into the house. They invited many friends to come from their flooded homes and stay in the new house, which was finished except for the marble slabs for the bathroom walls--it could not be delivered due to the flood. There were virgin oak floors and beautiful sun-rooms on three sides.

We were the fourth family to own the house. It was a wonderful home for 44 years--until our children were all living in other states, and my husband became ill. The neighborhood had "changed" from mainly Caucasian people to African-Americans, and after 1985 when crack-cocaine invaded, there were problems of crime for the good citizens who worked together to maintain friendliness and honesty. We organized citizen groups to work with city government, to hold neighborhood cleanups, and to welcome people of all colors and backgrounds.

Kitty; never lived in the area but had family and friends who did over the years. Your about right when you speak of the changes and you see all over the decay in Dayton and those who are still trying to keep their properties neat and tidy at best. The older of us have seen the damage that loss of jobs and drugs has done.Hang onto what you remember as things will never be the same and it just keeps moving . Its a disease there doesnt seem to be a cure for nor any boundaries. Human misery is what I call it.
