Below is a reference source for anyone interested in tracking down some information on Catholic churches in Dayton.

Someone with the Catholic Telegraph newspaper decided there was a need or an interest. Because of the source, obviously someone has to sort through things from Cincinnati and north, east, and west as well as south.

Among the pictures listed was a first communion class from St. John's church (St. John the Baptist) from somewhere around 1960 (which I can no longer find) but which I did have the presence of mind to copy.

One can run a search and find "official" pictures and short articles about many of Dayton's Catholic churches.

I don't know how to post a link herein, but this will get you to the Catholic Telegraph Photography Project.

He updates it with new things fairly frequently.

Hi - I checked the Catholic Telegraph link. What a
fantastic find! About a third to a half of the posts
are Dayton region photos/articles. Thanks for finding
and letting us know about this great (and fun) site.

You're Welcome!

It was an accidental find, one of those "what's this?" things.

The church I mentioned (St. John's) is at best elusive.

The only St. John the Baptist that I can remember was a small church in Tipp City, was there one in Dayton?

Absolutely! On the south side of West Third Street near the Wright Brothers family home, just a couple of blocks away from it.

I don't remember off hand if it was on West Fifth Street or Germantown Street, but there definitely was one and it was still standing in 1950 or so.

Thank you for that bit of information, it was certainly something that I never knew. All of the Catholic churches in the early 60s were so ancient looking that I guess I automatically assumed that none had gone before them.

Ratty,

I don't think it was particularly before any other (seems like Emmanuel was the first one). As I understand it, it went to make way for the highway there now.
