There was an orphanage somewhere before Shawn Acres. I don't mean St. Joseph's, but a city or county supported one.

Does anyone have any information on it? Where would the records be?

No.

In fact, I kind of wonder if Riverdale Rat came on the community scene first or after me.

(Remember, there are 20,000 people in Riverdale (45405, plus), not counting those that drift in and out or those that are once upon a time. That's a rough estimate I got from the post office one day when I decided to find out.)

Edited for a couple of errors. I think it's okay now :-)

The Montgomery County Children's Home originated from an institution that was founded back in 1844. It was then called the Dayton Orphan Asylum, and being entirely dependent on private donations did not make very rapid progress. From its inception until 1866 it took care of about sixty different children in all. At that time, however, the county took charge of it and greatly enlarged its scope. Four lots were added to the property on Summit Street, West Side, and a large brick building was erected at a cost of about $33,000. The picture for the 1867 building can be seen here http://home.dayton.lib.oh.us/archives/Preservation/Photo0396.html.
This would later move to Shawn Acres around 1925. I think this is the only one ran by the county. The records being from the beginning to 1924, before it became Shawn Acres, is called "An index to children's home records from Montgomery County, Ohio, 1867-1924". The Ohio Historical Society says that the records are being kept at Wright State University. I would check there first.
Good luck

Thank you for the information, Mr. Dalton. I had heard it was somewhere on Fifth Street.

I'm afraid, however, I don't know how to work that library link.
