Montgomery County Honor Roll
In releasing its list of Army dead in World War II in June, 1946, the War Department listed the following statistics for Montgomery County: 380 killed in action, 47 died of wounds, 3 died of injuries, 205 died from non-combat causes, 48 official finding of death and five missing. The list of dead for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard were combined and released in August 1946. It included the names of military personnel that died on December 7, 1941, even though war was not officially declared until the following day. Listed were 118 killed in action or of wounds, 3 died in concentration camps and one reported as missing. Both lists cautioned that they might contain errors. Names from the Coast Guard are followed by the letters USCG, Marines are USMC or USMCR, Navy personnel are USN or USNR. Army personnel are not marked, but does include thier rank.
This Honor Roll also contains names not included on the two lists mentioned above. Names were taken from the War Monument on Keowee Street, the Gold Star Mothers Monument on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard, and from the Soldier’s Casualty newspaper clippings file located at the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library. This was done in order to have as complete a list as possible. Names from these sources do not include the rank or which service the soldier served in.
