i grew up in old north dayton in the 60s i went to webster elementary school and my most valued memories is going to the library across from the liberal super market on troy street 6there was an old woman there who used to read and tell stories in the basement.we were very poor as was most the clan i ran with in those days.after we left the library we would go collect pop bottles and take them to charlies market on troy street or georges market on the street by the school which i cant remember right now lol.i remeber at christmas mom would take us window shopping down town to see the displays of elves and santa.at halloween i remember filling up a couple of pillow cases with candy from maryland ave to patterson park.if anyone can remember these give me a shout.

The days of returnable pop bottles were the days of independence for the kids. We too would collect bottles and exchange them for candy or other things. When I was a kid, a bottle brought in two cents. Not much until you realize that a full sized Hershey bar was only five cents.

I worked on Troy St for over 20 years and we used to go to lunch at this restaurant on Troy close to where Charlie's Import Foods is located but on the opposite side of the street. This would have been in the late 70's or early 80's and they had the best cabbage rolls I ever ate. Does anyone remember the name of the place?

I attended McGuffey 55-56 then went to Colonel White, in 57. I lived at 62 Messina Place , McGuffey Homes, torn down now and played a lot in Claridge Park, Stacy was a lady who ran the park for the city. Nice park, good activities, learned to play chess watching the elder men playing. The only names I remember of those who lived nearby and attended McGuffey was Wanda Allison, Judy McFadden and Reggie Welborn. There was a guy at school, a student who played a lot a basketball, he was good at it, a big fellow, I almost can think of his name, I can see him but... it's been a while.

Perry401 miss the days of the glass bottles as it was a great way for kids to have a few coins and independence. Wish we'd go back to that as now they just end up as broken glass on sidewalks and driveways. By the way, do you remember alot of litter on streets back then or are we just more inconsiderate today?

I used to collect enough empties to get a Pepsi and a few slices of baloney and sometimes a Clark Bar. A lot of us that remember those days were raised by children of the Great Depression and were taught to be thrifty (sometimes to a fault). Collecting pop bottles was one way to make a little bit of money and clean up the streets at the same time. I think a lot of young people these days don't want to 'lower' themselves to do what we did. JMHO. Let's see. A half pound of baloney was about 15 cents and a 12 oz. Pepsi was 10 or 11 cents. Clark bars were a nickle. Sound about right?
One of my first jobs was working for a small Mom and Pop store sortingand stacking returned bottles and keeping the pop racks full.

Can you still buy Clark bars in Dayton? Only place I found them in the past 10 years was a truck stop on 75 in TN at the top of the mountain.

Driver62, I think the restaurant you are thinking of was Rozenkrantz's - I think it was a tavern. I grew up in the neighborhood and my mother would never let us venture that far south on Troy Street until we were older. It's been closed for years, but Charlie's Imports is still open.

Not dealing with North Dayton, but the mention of cashing in pop bottles reminded me of a very enlightening summer in that regard. Lived out in the country, the wilds of Beavercreek, through the 60s. My buddies and I used to spend a great deal of our time hiking up and down the Little Miami, "hunting" with our BB guns and just generally getting lost in the woods.

Early one summer we found a small clearing where someone had obviously had quite a wing-ding. There were several empty wine bottle, lots of cigarette butts, and a complete case of empty, long neck Strohs' beer bottles. Our of little group knew there was a deposit on beer bottles, so we carried the case of them up to a local tavern and cashed them in for 48 (or was it 72?) cents. We went back the following week, and every week thereafter thoughout the summer, and always came away at least a case of empties, sometimes more. I was able to double my 25 cent/week allowance on beer bottles alone!

Mind you, we were only about 10 at the time, so some of the other things we found didn't much register with us. We assumed we found bits of underwear becasue the partiers must have been going skinny-dipping in the Little Miami. The one thing we really had trouble figuring out were the uninflated little balloons we found, along with what looked like the small foil packs like those used by Alki-Seltzer.

SheilaO - Thanks for the name and yes, it was a tavern. I had many a sandwich at Charlie's and my favorite is the Black Forest.

driver62,, I used to go kiser high, and as i remember it was the (Hungry House) on troy street that had the best cabbage rolls in dayton.. The two old hungarian ladies would give me a free one everytime i went in there for lunch during school... That's the place i remember that had the cabbage rolls man.. and Hartell's had the best burger's.. and dont forget the fries with gravy. I seem to remember that the Hungry House had an old pinball machine that only took nickels.. and that it didnt have bumpers or flippers.. It had no sound, no tilt and worked on gravity only.. It paid out in nickles for a certain amount of points that were rewarded by the ball's falling into numbered holes.. It was the ladies that paid out the nickle rewards, and that the younger kids were not allowed to play it.. It was old time gambling at it's finest... I wish i had that old pinball gambling machine....

copson~ It seems we have yet another memory in common!I didn't go to Kiser but my first husband did.His family lived in Old North Dayton for many years. We were married at Our Lady of the Rosary Church by Father Berning in 1964.
His parents owned the North Dayton Packing Company which was in the alley behind Valley St.Their last name was Bocko.
From the time we started dating in 1961 we spent many hours in Hartel's.That is where I learned to eat fries and gravy which I still love to this day!
I wrote a little story about Hartel's in the personal remembrances section a couple of years ago titled Citizen's Arrest. You might get a kick out of my stupidity!

Not too familiar with that area except for the Kuntz cafeteria that had wonderful food and then a barber shop on Troy where my first husband had his first job. Place was called Brittinghams. In my late teens I met some kids from Kiser and have been friends with them for years.

Kuntz cafeteria had great food but like many places in Dayton, the location is now an empty lot. For many years I worked in a pro photo lab at 1332 Troy right next to Furst Florist, so it was a short walk to Kuntz's for lunch.

We moved to Troy Street from Keowee Street in 1952. I went to Webster and Kiser schools. Had my hair cut at Jim Brittingham’s for years as did my father. I worked at the Dairy Isle and went in and cleaned up before school and in the evenings for about three years. Spent a lot of time in Hartel’s. Usually ate lunch at home or at Aunt Mary’s. I went to the Air Force in 1961. I’ve never lived in Old North Dayton after 1961 but go back and drive around sometimes when I am in Dayton. The only friend I remember who had a father on the Police Force was Nick Plummer.

Does anyone know if they saved the black panther that was in front of Kiser High School?
I drove by there the other day and I don’t remember seeing it. This is the first time I’ve been in the area in years. I can remember when they were taking donations for the panther.

I think the Black panther was moved to the new, to me, Kaiser School complex. I was playing around with Google street view and saw it. I remember one night before a football game, I was the driver for the getaway car for some kids from Stebbins painting it red and gray. I'm sure that wasn't the only time that was ever painted.

Thanks PaulH. The next time I'll stop and look around. As I remember the Panther was to have a special coating to make it easy to remove paint. They probably knew this would happen.

Another memory from Old North Dayton just popped into my mind out of the blue.I suppose that is the way of memories when you begin to get old!
Oberers Flowers on Troy St. was where two of my first husband's cousins worked in the 60's.Judy and Linda Dudon were their names. One of them married the son of the owner and I can't remember which one it was.
I do remember that if you were from the neighborhood it was the go to place for flowers for any and all occasions!I believe they are still in business at the same location!

Does anyone remember a butcher shop on a side street- possibly off Valley St? In the 60s they would give kids a raw hot dog to eat while their parents shopped!

My experiences of North Dayton in the 60s was around the Colonel White HS and E.J. Brown area.

Very fond memories of the mom and pop grocery stores, particularly one behind E.J. Brown owned by the Fouts family! Anyone else remember that?
