Good to say I loved this stuff for as long as I can remember. During the last few years of Dominic's existance the only thing good about the place was the salad. For those of you who are interested, here is a great recipe to make it at home. (1) Head of Lettuce (I will also buy the bag of salad you can buy at the grocery store); 1/3 cup of Olive Oil; 1/2 cup of sugar; 2oz jar of pimentos; 5 cloves of fresh garlic; 1/2 cup vinegar( I use whites, but any kind will do). Mix the Oil, Sugar, garlic, vinegar and pimentos. Our over the shredded lettuce of bag of premade salad in a large bowl and mix. Let stand for two hours, refrigerate if you like. It is AWESOME!

Sounds yummy and the only thing I could add is use a good nutrient loaded lettuce. I heard that iceberg is 99 percent water, 1 percent cellulose and does not contain much if any nutrition for a human. Romaine sounds good if you can add an avocado... lol Little brown rice, make it a complete meal.

Thank you Patman 1961 - I love that salad, and for many many years Dominics. We moved to Columbus when DESC closed and we would make the trip back home to have Dominics. It's too bad they couldn't keep up the quality and the location.

Juanita57 - I worked at DESC until they closed. I chose to stay in Dayton. I worked in "Z" the computer room. Where did you work at DESC? For several years after DESC closed, several of us would meet and catch-up for dinner at Dominics. It changed after Sonny died and not for the better.

carlatm75 - I remember the "Z" Directorate, the computer office. I worked in the Personnel office in Bldg 5. After DESC closed, we would meet also for dinner for a couple of years and then we seemed to all go our own way.

The last of the people at DESC left in September 1996. But I was part of the base closeout team and I stayed til the bitter end which was December 31, 1996.

This may taste a little like the Dominics dressing, but this is not what the ingredients are on the jars that they sell at some local grocers... No pimento, and they use "granulated" garlic AKA garlic powder.

Thanks Steve K. Have you tried the recipe I posted? I always wanted to get to DLM and see what they put in the "Dominic's House Salad".

Too much sugar. I hate anything except dessert that's too sweet (I'll have sour cherries with duck, but even applesauce with pork is too much sweet for me, even with the substantial German in my makeup).

I cut down the sugar to one tablespoon and added a tin of anchovies, a few grinds of black pepper and a whole raw egg and used EV olive oil and red wine vinegar. Dumped everything but the oil into the Waling Brendah (remember THAT commercial?) and set to puree, then drizzled in the oil thru the top.

Set up the salad bowl with the "three R's" (spears of Romaine, shreds of Radicchio, and slices of Radish) and added some tomato wedges and a scatter of pitted black olives. The pimento was a nice touch.

Here's the "salad" my Mom made, every time, and a visit to her sisters' houses provided no escape, as they all did the same thing:

Cut Iceberg letttuce into semi-bite-size chunks, combine with sliced radish, tomato, and cucumber, and toss with Kraft Mayonnaise.

Blah.

It wasn't until I got here to the National Capital Area and was invited in December of 1973 to a dinner at the British Embassy (Being hosted by an MI guy for some US Secret Service, AFOSI, and Naval Investigative Service (Now NCIS) types that I got a taste of what a REAL salad could be.

It was the garlic that made the difference. A group from work would sometimes go there for lunch. I always got home before my husband and when he walked in the door he would say "Did you eat at Dominic's"?
Took a couple of days to get the garlic out of your system. LOL

Dominics had the best salad ever and do remember the particles of garlic. You always knew the people who had eaten there as your breath was the telltale sign for 3 days. I used to ask people if they had eaten at Dominics recently and when they said yes we'd all laugh like fools. They did at one time have excellent food and do remember going there around 2006. My favorite meal was their shrimp scampi in butter garlic sauce!!!! They could smell you coming another day or so with that combo.

Luv my Dayton has it right. Dominic's had a great tasting salad but the garlic content was outrageous for anybody who had to be around you for days afterwards.

The house salad was the best! Marinated in garlic and lasted for days. Hahaha! I miss that salad! Dominic's was our favorite place to hang out and eat after a concert or rehearsal. Our food was always good. I can't remember ever getting anything bad to eat there. Meatless eggplant was always one of my favorites. Lasagna, and spaghetti with the chicken livers. Yummy place. Sure do miss it.

We used to go to Dominic's after a night of bowling with another couple. This would have been in the early '60's.Always had a large pizza and 4 salads. I thought it was the greatest. After moving away in 1969 we would go back whenever we came back to town. Sure hated to see them close.

Thank you Patman1961. I found this site about a week or so back and I was going from topic to topic when I found this one.
I too, fondly remember Dominic's house salad and I was excited to try it again so I wrote your ingredient list down and made some for my wife last saturday. I have to tell you that was spot on. I minced the garlic cloves, not the garlic powder someone else mentioned, and left it in the fridge for a couple of hours and it was great. My wife was also very pleased and I'm looking forward to having it again soon. Thanks.

Seems as though every family or privately owned restaurant has disappeared. Ones now are pretty much in or around malls where I avoid like the plague as hate malls number one and chain restaurants doesn't always mean good food or reasonable prices.
