My vote for best local TV pitchman would be Steve Tatone. He came across on TV just the way he was in person: warm and friendly.

When he started Holiday Aid to feed the hungry, everyone in the local media wanted to be a part of it, partially because of his leadership. I got to sing (as part of the choir) on two or three of the fundraising albums that he produced.

So many local business owners locally have no business being on TV. It's an ego thing and they have no idea how bad they look or come across. I literally cringe at some of the commercials that feature a local person. Radio included.

Anything's better than that guy Steve VanGorder from Jeff Schmitt Auto Group screaming at you on TV all the time "Get In Here!!!".

Whoever it was who said "I DON'T CARE ABOUT MAKING MONEY I JUST LOVE TO SELL CARPETS!"

Yeah sure, and I love to drive; but I run the meter every time!

Thanks Ol'Roy. As a boy watching all the shows on Sunday afternoons, that was a commercial that was kind of enblazened in my memory. Yours too, I bet..

Didn't Steve Tatone have a sister, Denise I think, who had a dealership and made commercials too?

Don't overlook "Doc Rusk" who ran a heating and AC business out of Cincinnati. His commericals were very common on all the Cincy TV stations back in the day. The guy was the most unlikely pitchman you could imagine, he looked like an old bulldog and had a voice that sounded like he gargled peebles. Actually saw Doc once in Cincy when I was a student at UC, he looked even less appealing in person than he did on TV.

Way back when, the actor who was 'Mr Goodwrench' was my neighbor Ralph Dennler. He was actually a buyer downtown for either Rikes or Beermans (not sure which) and did part-time acting with Kenley Players.
It was very ironic that he was 'Mr Goodwrench', because that poor man didn't know the difference between a brake drum and a muffler bearing!!!

I don't think I can soon forget the BHA commercials and the "jingle." It has always stayed with me. I can still sing it! Wow. Whoever wrote it was right on top of how to make it stick!

Remember the horse from "Get a Voss Chevrolet." They gave out key chains with the Voss horse a couple of years ago.

Cross - Voss still uses that commercial every now and then only without the Chevrolet at the end as they sell more than one brand of car now.

I always like Perry Gerson, of Miami Hardware "If we don't have it, they don't make it", line.

Bild1952- I went to school with Perry's daughter. It was the best hardware store north of Downtown. And as it said in the line- they had parts and hardware you could get nowhere else.

From what I understand, the "get in here" guy from the Jeff Schmitt TV commercials is no longer employed there.

Now that you mention it Doug68, I haven't noticed the guy on the commercials lately. There are a couple new guys on the commercials.

I always got a kick out of the local commercial when a cute kid said, "My dad can save your dad money."

Steve and Denise Tatone had an older brother (Bob Tatone Buick) who kept a much lower profile. I played little league (13-15) against Bob who could throw BB's as a RH pitcher.
