It was very nostalgic to see a few comments about Cantrell & Guy Chrysler Plymouth. I worked there (lot attendant/parts runner/gofer) off and on from 1969 to 1972. I bought my first car there in 1970. It was a 340 Duster and i paid about $2700 for it. Pretty cheap compared to today and the $1.30 and hour I made pretty much was all going for the car.

mpup, I hung around down there a few times summer of '71. went to Wright State where I met Bobby Cantrell Jr, we became friends because I was a Mopar nut. bought my first new car there in fall of '71, a charcoal grey '71 Scamp, 318 and 3 speed on the floor. brand new and I noticed later that the driver's door had been repainted. also the window sticker called for 3.55 gears and sure grip, somebody had switched them for 3.23 open gears. it was a fun street car after I split the Y pipe and put on Purple Hornies and duals. also remember they got in one of the ugliest cars I ever saw, a big black Chrysler Newport 4 door, black inside, but with a terrible green vinyl top.

Hey plr2, we probably crossed paths. I remember that Bobby had a girlfriend that live just off of Salem named Pattie(?)(nickname Peppermint Pattie(?). I learned alot about life from being around such a diverse group of people. From the owners, the mechanics and the Salesman, both new and used. I didnt realize it at the time but being young then and looking back now it was basically "Life 101".

You guys must be pretty young. My late brother-in-law Loren "Dinty" Moore's, dad owned Burg Motor Co., a Pontiac deal which he sold to Joe Patterson. (An admitted mistake) Pontiacs' had sagging sales for years. Joe Patterson later told Loren Sr. that he had sold a "Goldmine". The Moore's bought a N. Main location in Dayton just across the bridge beside Davis Buick and formed Moore-Rowell Chrysler Plymouth. After a few years they sold out and bought in with Roland St.John's Buick deal in Fairborn. That lasted a while until my brother-in-law, Dinty Jr. moved on and opened a used car lot on Broad Steet also in Fairborn. His dad had retired and moved to Florida. Later he hooked up with Harold "Doc" Wagner and sold mainlly imports to the AF guys stationed with SAC. Later Doc got a Subaru deal in and Loren took a Sales Manager position At Cantrell and Guy on South bound Dixie Hyw. I'm thinking about 1966. I was working at NCR then and he asked if I'd like to sell used cars part time in the evening on my way home. As sales manager he could sell used cars himself, but could not collect commissions. He wrote his deals in my name and we split the commissions.
That was about the beginning of the end. He never really like the car business quit C&G and along with my sis and their 4 kids moved to Winter Park Fl. and took a job as Golf course grounds superintendent at a Private Golf Course. Bob Cantrell had got him interested in golf by leaving his putting green out in the office when he was gone. Dinty always admired his (Bob's) 2 Hole-in-One trophies. Art Guy, I recall was the Accountant and chief bail bond payer for Bob's brother, George Cantrell. George had an alcohol problem and a ex-wife who would have him arrested nearly every weekend for non-payment of child support.
WOW! I got carried away. Both Moores' are long ago passed away. Doc Wagner died some time back and his son continues today with Wagner Motors Subaru. If I think of other details I'll get back. Oh an about the repainted door...Bob C took new Imperial of the and wrecked it on a fishing trip to Canada. It was rebuilt and later sold to some Dayton Doctor.
One more thing mpup. Fox Motors,DeSoto-Plymouth; and Drayer Motors Dodge, were two other new car dealers in Miamisburg.

Dave

I forgot to mention that while working at C&G from 69-72, I remember there was a big diference between the personalities of Bob Cantrell and Art Guy. Bob would always walk around with a golf club in his hand, and Art was what appeared to be the consumate professional. There was quite a difference between the new and used car salesmen as well. The used car salesmen were pretty much banished to an old wooden shed. Art would have me wash his Chrysler Imperial every Saturday afternoon, and upon finishing it, he would come back to the service dept and walk around the car (rolling his cigar in his hand) to inspect the job I had done. If he approved of it he would give me .50, if not, I had to wash it all over again. It stuck with me because even today and thru all of the years since then, having a clean car is a big deal to me. Bob, on the other hand, would have me go to his house every Saturday afternoon and mow his grass and did'nt give me any money except the minimum wage I was already earning. The other people that worked there from the mechanics, the other salesman, the parts guy, and the girls in the office would probably make a pretty good sitcom by todays standards. I drive by the old dealership from time to time and think about working there and how could over 40 years gone by so fast.

Mpup - You mentioned buying your 340 Duster in 1970 for about $2700. It is funny the different tiny details you remember after all these yeats. Another car price comparison is in Sept 1968 (day the new 69's hit the showroom floor) I ordered a new 1969 Corvette convertible - gold/black 427 435 hp tri-power, extra removable vinyl hard top, 456 gears, no power or A/C from White Allen on N Main. I remember the sticker price was $5985. I was 21 and making about $8000-$9000 a year at E F McDonalld as a computer programmer. My dad asked what my car payment was and I said $113 a month for 3 years and I thought he was going to have a coronary. "A CAR PAYMENT OVER $100 a month - are you NUTS?" were is exact words.

I worked at Cantrell & Guy 75-76, and was introduced to my future wife by Bobby's sister, Tricia, who worked part time in the cashier office and was buds with my wife. While that happenstance was fortunate for me, the cars that came through our service dept. reflected an all-time low in American vehicle build quality, Chrysler in particular. As the service writer, I was made painfully aware of that fact on a daily basis, generally in a less than friendly tone. Couldn't blame them. A young attorney with a new triple black 'Lean Burn' Cordoba begged me to just cut the catalytic converter off the car because we couldn't stop the car's exhaust from smelling like rotten eggs, and he said it "Smells like I pooped my pants when I'm out on a date". He didn't seem amused when I told him that if it were the fault of the car, it would have smelled like that all the time...

Olds88: Dave Simon and George Karras were friends and knew them both. Have taken my children and more recently the grandchildren to play at the park down on wonderly where both had lived. Karras family had some tragic things happen as they lost their daughter in her teen years and later George was shot and killed by an intruder up in Columbus. While at the park I began talking to a woman and discovered that though much younger, she too knew the family and only one still living is the youngest son Nick. Only business that remains in tact on corner of Far Hills and Lewiston is the Genes Valet dry cleaning business which has been there for many decades and still does quite well. The entire corner of Dorothy and Far Hills has been built up and all opened just since mid 2012.Think I may have been in contact with your sister when I first became a member of Classmates which was years ago.

I bought my first new car -- a Gremlin -- from a dealer in downtown Miamisburg in 1973. Contrary to most experiences, I kept the car for 25 years and never did more than tires, oil changes, brakes, and a new exhaust system every couple of years. I sold the car which was still running with 256,000 miles around 1995 and it ran at least 3 more years.

The dealer moved to 725 across from where the Adventure Golf is now. I wish I could remember their name. They were great and I had most of the service work done there. Later I bought a car at Key Chrysler in Xenia and I mentioned to Terry Toby how impressed I was with the AMC dealership, who I mentioned by name and how sad I was that they went out of business. He said "of course they went out of business -- they were too honest".

Hi, folks.

I have an old dealer publication called Nash News. In one issue, there's a picture of Ruth Lyons sitting in a (then) new 1950 Nash Rambler convertible. The banner on the side says the car is from Oakwood Nash.

A friend and I have been doing some detective work on this dealership. I discovered that it was only in business for about 3 years. He discovered that the address is the same as it is for the current Dorothy Lane Market in Oakwood: 2170 Far Hills Avenue. (DLM was a fruit stand in 1950 and had a different address.)

My question: does anyone have any pictures or even recollections of this brief Nash dealership?

Thanks in advance! ----Todd Ruel
