Years ago there were many cafeterias in the area. The last Culps I remember was in Kettering, along Far Hills acrossed the road from our street. There may a stray still in business and believe it is in Carillon Park.More of a restaurant then a cafeteria. Can anyone expound on this? They had the 50's motiff going.

Our family pretty much headed to either Westward Ho which had great deals or the Carillon cafeteria. Loved both of them. There also was a cafeteria over at Patterson and Wilmington called Sacksteders who closed sometime ago. Thought it was a bad idea as the big seniors complex was right there and left old timers with no place to go get a hot meal. I also remember over at Brientenstraters a big grocery and that also left. That neighborhood was left high and dry for those who didn't drive. Theres still a cafeteria up in Kettering called the MCL and it is pricey and not of the quality that I remember from the others.

I took that photo of Culps in the Arcade in 1969. Remember the Westward Ho salad dressings (French, Italian, 1,000 Island and Blue Cheese (was extra) and the roast beef dinners and potatoes/carrots/onions as a side and mushrooms (I think they were .25 extra) and the pies! I remember the Carillon had great custard. What about the original BBQ sauce at Old Hickory next door. More paprika flavor They changed the sauce to more generic BBQ in the early 1990s. Anyone remember Vito's on Dorothy lane in Kettering?

Makes me feel like plopping down in that corner stool that's open and have one of those roast beef dinners, with custard pie for dessert!

Donw. I so hope you see this post !!.. WOW MAN !!!.. That man seated to the left at the end of the counter is my father. It just has to be!!!. that big head and those hands and how he is seated.. and even the ears and haircut, the typical dayton barber collage cop cut.. he ate lunch at culps all the time, a lot of the cops did. He was in plain clothes in that picture he must have been a detective by then. or maybe had a court date. He was a dayton police officer.. WOW!!!.. I downloaded that picture man and printed it out.. and i'm going to give it to my sister.. He lived at the gibbons motel in the arcade when he went on the police dept in 1948. I can reconize that big irish cop anywhere.. What a favor.. Thanks my friend.. Where did you get that picture ?. and do you know what year it was taken?.I'm trying to figure that out by the ladies style of clothing maybe late 50's early 60's maybe?. My mother was working at culps as a waitress when my father met her.. When dad was in uniform near the safety bldg one morning he caught her jaywalking near sacred heart church and he tried to stop her, and she ran from him..she ran into the church. The priest wouldnt let him in to give her a ticket.. he found her later when he went into culps for lunch.. she was waitressing, he never gave her the ticket, and, the rest is history. my mother use to take me to the CLICKITY CLACK it was a little restaraunt downtown near the safety bldg near where wone was later located. Do you remember the clack?. We lived on west second st in the 400 blk right downtown in the late 50's to 60 or 61.. (I was just about four or five or so ).. the CLICKITY CLACK wasnt far from the safety bldg. right on the corner of w3rd st.across from the big courts bldg. It had a neon train sign on the bldg.. Dad just walked to work back then..I cant believe that picture man.. I just cant.. He was so camera shy anyway.. Thank you.. i'm Don also..

donw. Thank you for the info.. i'm 56... You wouldnt believe how that picture has affected me.. Also, i was living in riverdale when the flying pizza opened across from the biltmore hotel on n.main st. The little italian guy the skinny one, one of the owners, really like my sister.. she was kinda tall and heavy set, real dark long hair, real pretty..healthy looking, if you know what i mean?. She would never go out with him. it was always free slices from him.. I recently went to the flying pizza in beavercreek with my wife and seen his picture in their store. he was in a picture of the flying pizza on n.main street downtown when it first opened. my wife and i had a long conversation with the fellow working there in the beavercreek store. he said that the little guy was his uncle, and the other fellow in the picture was his dad, and that he worked there then with his uncle's and father. he was fifteen.. we talked about downtown and OLD RAGS.. Remember him?. he also told me how that little store on main st financed two families.. mostly at a slice at a time.. and that his uncle, that little guy, was quite the ladies man..( apparently my sis wasnt the only one.). lol.. They are and were great people..The pizza hasnt changed at all man. taste's exactly the same.. still great !!!.. Thank's again donw for all your help.. DON...

I was 15 when I worked at Culps in the Arcade. As an adult, I still recall the meanest "boss" I have ever worked for. Her name was Sadie. What a really mean person!
