I just barely remember shopping in this store in the early 60s, I think it was in Miamisburg, maybe West Carrolton. If I recall correctly, it was a membership-type store that catered to civil servents. I know we were able to shop there because my dad worked at WPAFB. Seems like it was a chain, but maybe not.

My Dad remembers the store, but can't find anyone who does. Haven't been able to find anything about it on-line either. Anyone esle remember FAME?

It was on the west side of Springboro Pike, just south of Dixie. I believe the building is still there. It was open to anyone who would pay the membership fee.

That name sounds familiar but would have been too young myself to have shopped there. Funny but back then people did business in and around their homes as many people still didn't have 2 cars and when they had it for the day they shopped around and got alot done.

Yes, Cal Mayne and/or Dorothy Lane Market ran FAME, but there was some sort of support from NCR too I was told. When it first opened, NCR used the store as a "store of the future" and would show it to salespeople and out-of-town visitors. If featured the latest cash-register technology and also inovative displays and shelving.

For example, canned goods were along the walls and used chute systems with the cans laying on their sides so the cans could be stocked from behind the shelving without blocking the aisles. For bulky items like large bags of dog food or water softener salt, the customer would take a ticket and when the item was rung up, an order was placed to have the things that were purchased at the pickup area. I think this store also bagged items and instead of pushing your cart out to the car, the store would hold you items in a pickup area and you would drive over to the building where someone would load them into your trunk for you (including the bulky items ordered through the cash register).
