The "Side Door" was the first bar that I was ever in. Making it unique were its painted black walls. Handpainted on these same walls were small jingles and personal messages requested by its many patrons, e.g., "Dave, Northmont'68 loves Kathy, Trotwood,'68." All you needed to do to have your message painted on the wall was to write it down on a napkin and hand it to the bartender. More often than not, it was up there the next time you went in. Nearly everytime I went in there, "Footstompin' Music" by Grand Funk or "Jump into the Fire" by Niilson was blaring on the juke box.

Doug The Side Door was owned by Dave Gough a real nice guy. The bouncer there was Gene Randell a not so nice guy if you caused problems. The Side Door was a place to party. Dave also owned the Tiger Lounge at 1510 N. Main St Did a lot of PHC's there. What street did you meet the guy that did the commercials on.

corvette6: If I remember correctly, it was Rangeview Drive, just off Westbrook Road in Clayton (formerly Randolph Township)where I met the guy from the commercials. That was probably 30 years ago.
Re the Side Door, there was a woman bartender who was a fixture there in the early 1970's, but I can't seem to remember her name at the moment. (Sandy?) Another song that always seemed to be playing on the juke box when I was there was "Funk 48" (or 49)by Grand Funk.

Any one remember ,The Islander Lounge , across the street from Northtown shopping center. It was open in the 70's and had a tropical theme, next door was a beauty shop? My mom Dottie owned it, she also had the bar on Brown St.

Once I was 18, or close to 18, The Side Door was a favorite place, and always friendly. One night a Dayton Police officer pulled up in front of my house (parents out of town) and delivered my younger brother (class of 69), who the officer said had been caught with a fake ID. "I'll take care of it officer", and I confiscated the ID. Years later as a young lieutenant in the Marine Corps, I was Officer of the Day for 2nd Btn, 10th Marines. In the duty desk was a list of various emergency information, including a list of places around the country off-limits to Marines. I checked Dayton, and sure enough, the only off-limits place in the city was the Side Door.

Everytime I went into the Side Door, either Grand Funk, Niilson ("Jump Into the Fire"), or The James Gang seemed to be playing loudly on the Jukebox. Oddly, it was known more as a biker's bar I believe.

Side Door was my hangout in the 80's. Great music and alot of fun. Mike Murray owned the bar. And I remember some of the bartenders were Sammie, Beth, Annette, Ace and KK. They use to have people ride thru the bar on their harleys. Known to always serve the drunk! You were never cut-off there, apparently! Strange were the men that came in there had animal names Fish, Bear, Rat, Moose etc lol

Since I grew up in Huber Heights, I remember most of the bars there;Glass Crutch, Bob's Tavern, Velvet Swing which is now The Cape...even remember the Pooki Pooki! I also spent a number of years singing in the east end of Dayton and played a lot of the "finer establishments" in that area, too! Sang at the Keyboard Lounge on Xenia Ave., V-bar at "the v", Kelly's Bar & Hillside Tavern on Wyoming, Paradise Inn at Wayne & Wyoming and at many of the "private clubs" in that area. Also played a few bars on the Dixie strip in Huber Heights, like Lil' Abners, Skiddles...Obadiahs and McGuffeys.
