The band i enjoyed the most in town was the Municipal Band. They used to play in the bandshell at Island Park during the summer. Don Bassett conducted them for years. He had either been in or had a connection with Sousa's band. Some of the music had annotations that came from that experience. The last time I played in a band in Dayton was 4th of July in'72. I left for the Army 2 days later. What an experience!

Does anyone remember the name of the country/western nightclub on n. dixie drive where the band Country Earth used to play. They were so good. I just can't remember the name of the nightclub. Senior moments I guess.

driver - Didn't the Dating Lounge use to be Johnny & Norma's, until Johnny and Norma split up? Then Norma had a bar on North Main, while Johnny kept the Dating Lounge?

Am I close with my memory, or am I way off base?

driver62, nope. Been to many bar fights at the Venus. Later on it became Peppers. Don't know what it is now.

Are you thinking of the Tender Trap?

Billd - I remember three country bars on Dixie. One was Johnny's and the Gentlemen's Club further north (can't remember what it's called) was country and a little further north was another one. Sure wish I could remember what they were called but I know it wasn't the Tender Trap. Isn't the Tender Trap a girlie bar?

My father in law grew up in Dayton and cut a record. His name was Gregory Holzapfel and lived there from the late 50's to the mid 70's. I am trying to find a copy of his record and anyone who knew him. He passed away in May '98(late 40's) He had spoken of his record and wanted to give it his son and grandson. I know he played with local bands.I would love to be able to give my husband some information about his dad as a 40th birthday gift. Thank you all for any info you come up with. I live in the Boston area and can't troll all his old haunts to find Greg's friends.

I just watched the VH-1 special "Finding the Funk". The show acknowledged the Dayton influence on the funk genre of music, referencing a number of Dayton bands like Ohio Players, as well as a number of other bands I had never heard of (funk is not my kind of music). I watched the show based on the article in Tuesday's USA Today, which gives similar credit to Dayton. The show examined the reasons for the Dayton influence, crediting the well-paying auto industry jobs as a reason why kids grew up with access to music instruments, etc.

Good to see my hometown of Dayton receiving a positive review in national media.

Does anyone remember a teen club on Gettysburg that didn't last too long but was always packed. My band played there often.

There was a band called "Dusty" that used to play at Walnut Hills on Wayne Ave., but I think they were out of Cincinnati. If I remember correctly, they also did a few gigs at some of the clubs on Brown Street (1st Stop?). This would have been in 78-79.

I started my music venture in 1964 with my brother Dennis Linville,GaryHamilton, and Dave Schopfle. Then a band called the Yoemen Warders. Been playing pretty much continually. Helped start a band called Nightshade in 1984 wit Clarence McGirr and Alan Shuler. Kept that going with a few name changes and minimal personnel changes, Loco then Night Reign. Left for health reasons in 2010 and summer of 2013 helped form Eagles tribute band Double Eagles Tribute with Gary Hill from a band mentioned earlier on this forum, Captain Crunch and the Crew, Jeff Tutt,, Scott Ankney, and Layne Loxley. We are currently playing around Ohio... Thanks for the forum... Dirt Phil Linville

Ahh, fond memories of the Dayton music scene! I skated to Stu Self at the rink in Beavercreek many years. The Lovers, Low Rent Blues Allstars, Shake and the Senders, Mojo Kings, Cotton, Red Allen - wow!
Remember Sun, Heatwave? Giant? Fannigan's Isle?
How about the Slugs?! I used to hang out with Jim Dwyer, Jeff Pitsinger, Walt Ruff and a motley crew at Kramers. I played on a softball team named the Slugs with those fellas and the story goes, Jim stole the team name for the band! Remember when the Slugs opened up for Stevie Ray at Gilly's just before he really hit it big? Pits turned to me and said "this is the last time we'll ever see him in a small club like this."
Anyone remember a band from the early to mid-seventies called the Elders? Who played in that band?
Good times! ...still are!

I was a graduate of Belmont HS in 1967 and some of my favorite places were the Diamond club, the LT club in HH, Timothy's on Brown St, the Tempest club on Linden Ave, Castaway club in Xenia, and does anyone remember the spinning colored ball that had lights in it that hung from the ceiling?

Anyone recall the band Mark Sigmund Anderson and Kixx (WTUE Homegrown III), which morphed into the Beat Boys? Dave Haley was the guitarist and they were pretty much the house band at Obadiah's (Centerville; now Diamonds) in the early to mid '80s. Had some crazy times there running sound for them.

I'm looking for any information on a band called Sounds of Love, or Love Sounds, (or something along those lines), from around 1971. I believe it was two guys and a girl. A possible name of one of the band members was Scott Petrie, or some version of that. They played in Dayton, but may have been from out of state, possibly Tennessee. I appreciate any info at all. I'm trying to locate a person : )

I was a graduate of Belmont in 67. I as well was a fan of the Diamond Club. I also went to Tempest club and the LT club in Huber Heights, people had a lot more freedom and places to go back then. The young people were allowed to drink 3.2 beer at that time. We learned how to grow up and be responsible for ourselves. The 60's was the best time ever.!! There is one other thing, we had the battle of the bands with Steve Kirk.

I saw the McCoy's perform "Hang on Sloopy" at The She in Dayton, Ohio. It was decades ago, but I'll never forget it. The She had drink and drown on Sunday nights. For one low price you could drink all the watered down beer you could drink. Heh. Some of the best days of my life.

I remember seeing Blue Oyster Cult perform in Dayton, Ohio at a free concert. They were great.

I saw McGuffey Lane at McGuffy's in Dayton, Ohio. They were good.

I knew a guy who said he was in Ricky Nelson's band at one time. He had a recording studio, and recorded some songs I wrote and sang. Gary Lukens.

I also remember seeing lots of concerts at the Hara Arena. Great concerts.

I remember the Slugs in 1980 playing at Sam's across from the Spaghetti Warehouse on 5th Street. Another band was Bramble. Their lead singer (Kyle) and some others play in a Irish band now, called Dulahan. Watch for them on St. Patrick's day. They will play at 4 or 5 different venues throughout the day and evening.

I haven't seen anything on here about the passing of Bill Witherspoon. He was one of the best sax men in the Dayton area. He also was one of the most soulful singers I ever heard. He is missed

He was a great guy DS. I played with him in Marvin, (Smith), Betty & The Triumphs. I have a link from a source in Florida which is a very nice obit from when he passed. I'm not sure if it is something I could post here or not, but I can e-mail it as an attachment if not.
