Anywone remember when you could dial a busy number and speak between the Beeps. Anyone else who got a busy number could hear you. Back in the 60's there was always conversasions going on between the beeps. It may still work.

I was in my preteens so my sisters who attended Kiser High used it, they called it something I forget what, The Busy? I guess that if enough people called the same number, the line would send out a busy tone and conversations would bleed over and people could talk. It was very popular in our house, early to mid Fifties I think.
The phone was a dial up, black, heavy, corded that you could use to tear a house down with, you could throw it into a wall and the wall would suffer, they were well built and the cords were real heavy duty.
Our first phone Hemlock 8887 was a party line, our first television was a Raytheon, my what progress we've made in technology, unfortunately we seem no closer to world peace than we were then.
One would think that creating world peace would be goal number 1 for our species. Everyone is a blood related there are no exceptions. One would imagine that we would want to bring our children to a great world where worldwide community exists but not yet, our intelligence has a way to go to reach that goal for sure. : + )

Yes, it is a shame that such a large part of the world wants to stay in the 13th century and wants to destroy anyone who makes progress or shows compassion.

YES, I remember the beep line well. never quite figured out how it worked but iused to call it a lot. the best thing was you used to be able to call it from a pay phone and still get your dime back because it was a busy signal. met a lot of girls on the beep line. the girl i remember best was Debbie Burris from huber heights. Debbie where are you ?

Haven't thought about that in years. Used it with some success as well. I'm 54 now and it was my father that told me how to use it in my early teens, lol. Must have been around for some time before we got to it.

I had forgotten all about that. I never knew what it was called, and don't really remember how it worked, but we used to call it and talk to boys. We had a party line on our home phone and I would sometimes listen in to my neighbors conversations...I also got in trouble for it a few times.

I'm not old enough to remeber the party line but growong up in Bellbrrok with a Xenia exchange I learned that when making prank phone calls. The reciver said calls could make lots of trouble for you by just not hanging up. Long story short, My father nearly beat us to death over that little leason

Man, I hadn't thought about the busy line in YEARS. My girlfriends and I discovered it back around 1961 or 62 when we would try to call WING to make requests and got a busy signal. But when I moved to Jefferson Township, it was even better on General Telephone's system, they were so loud you could hear just about everybody. I remember sometimes some cranky "old person" who legitimately got a busy signal would hear us kids and threaten to "report" us. What innocent fun we had back then...

My wife and I met thru beepline, 1972. It was weird, we had 25x and 27x phone exchanges to use. Worked real well late at night. We've been married almost 40 years. Kids and grandkids think we're joking about beepline!

Am shocked to think that got by when back then. Do remember the party lines though. We thought it was cool to listen in on others conversations never thinking they could do the same with ours.We never really knew who the others were on the party line and hope they didn't know who we were. Yes, not making a complete hang up could keep a phone busy for hours. Am glad for the technology that rid us of that as am sure people just to be mean thought it was a good idea.

We always had a private line, but my husband grew up in rural VA with a party line. One line, about 4 households all on the same road. And one lady who knew everybody's business and would tell your mama!

We had the beep line here in the Twin Cities, MN back in the 1970's, only we called it the Jam Line. There was recently a radio broadcast about it complete with old vintage audio of the Jam Line. You can read about it here as well as listen to the audio of the actual broadcast! http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2012/12/24/arts/jam-line/

Around 1953-1954 there were public phones on the Main Street side of the courthouse and teens from all over town used to call one of the phone numbers and talk to each other. It worked for a while, but then it seemed something happened and you no longer could do it.

I know I used it in Beavercreek in 1968. I ended up talking a lot to a gal that lived (rented from what I remember) somewhere on the West side of Belbrook Fairfield Rd on the N side of either North Dr, Pebble Creek Dr or Suburban Dr. just N of where Lantz came out. ----------
