Just wondering if anyone has history on the old giant red brick factory building that used to sit at Linden Ave and Davis ave in east dayton. I can remember walking past the building in the 60s and smelling soap. I think they made all kinds of colored soaps for kids. also I can remember a bunch of old white brick buildings across the street. there were many buildings maybe 8-10 what were these buildings used for ?

These buildings were the old HEWITT SOAP FACTORY. I had a aunt that retired from there. Thus being the reason it did always smell like clean soap.

I used to go visit my aunt up on findley street just off of east fifth. there was a big catholic church there on the corner. I used to go to a little candy store there on 5th street and drink fountain cokes. it was run by an old lady but I forget her name. she was really nice. they sold comic books and magazines too.

dquartz: The catholic church used to be Holy Family. the Pastor there was Father Gallagher. The candy store you are speaking of was "Winnies confectionary"
and the old lady was Winnie herself. she had the best Lime phosphates in East Dayton. Thanks for bringing back those memories.

Yep, Culp's Cafe is at Carrilon Park. Since I never saw the original one downtown, I don't know if it looks the same or not. Inside, it looks like the 1940's with "Buy War Bonds" posters on the walls and an old time soda fountain.

Recently, they upgraded the menu so don't know if they still have the items that were on the original menu. I last ate there in the summer of 2008 and yes, I had a Lime Phosphate with my meal.

You don't need to pay to enter the park as Culp's has an entrance off the parking lot but if you have the time, they've added a lot to the park. It costs $8 to tour the park unless the rate went up since 2008.

Anyone who is even a little interested in Dayton history should visit the Carillon Park. There is much to see and experience, from early inns, schools and homes to printing press, Wright cycle shop and an early flyer, railway and trolley cars and bus (there is a City Transit trolley bus), the Gem City clock that stood over Third and Main and then I75. It is a walk back through history of this area.

Carillon Park must have grown by leaps and bounds since I last visited. all I remember was a open park and the bell Tower itself. we went there a couple of times on Easter. I dont remember any historical displays. I also never heard that the old Gem City clock was moved again and is now there. sounds like Carillon Park turned into something really nice.

dquartz: I just took a spin around east 3rd and Linden ave. courtesy of Mr. Google and I didnt recognize much. you have a lot of questions about this area so let me tell you where and what I remember.

The theater that you ask about is torn down it sat in or around the 2100 block of east 3rd. the building is gone. there is a long grassy lot there where I beleive it to have sat. noticibly gone are the Vic & Mom's Pizza place and the big Funeral parlor that used to sit in the same area but on the south side of the street. the funeral home was there for more than 60 years and used to occupy a large double white house if memory serves. there was a large red brick rooming house across from it (still there) that was owned by a member of the Peffley family. going back down to Linden ave I see the southwest corner that used to occupy the neighborhood store you asked about. the building is still there with the mural painted on the side but the old store looks empty and for rent. on the other corner (S.E.) is a Chase Bank. I cant recall what used to be there. the grassy area across from that at the head of Springfield street used to be occupied by a 2 story building with buisnesse's in the front. I cant remember all of them but I do recall eating in a small diner that was there. moving west down 3rd street a couple of doors I see a long building with a green awning that says TLC. this is where the bar B Que house was that you asked about that used to have the chicken broasters in the front window. they were famous around town and was in buisness for many years. I remember a bad fire in there one time but I am almost sure they remodeled and reopened. going a bit farther west I see that the old apartment building is still standing at the corner of 3rd and webb st, there used to be a Red Goose Shoe store downstairs in the front. that retail space looks as though it is empty now. the big green house where your uncle used to rent an apartment from Dr. Teague is directly across the street from the apartment building on the northwest corner. it now has white siding. moving down to 3rd and terry street, I see the old Emanuel Church is still standing. (the main sanctuary used to be on the 2nd floor if memory serves)the building across the street on the SE corner used to be occupied by a large drugstore complete with a soda fountain, it looks like it is now a Pawn Shop. if you or any of the other readers remember the name of the drug store at 3rd and Terry or whatever happened to the bar b Que house (or remember the name of it) I would love to know. also I cant remember the name of the old funeral home that was there for so many years. I would really like to know the answers to these questions or anything else you may be able to add to my comments...Thanks.

The building with TLC on it is Tom Lehman Concepts. It's an Ad Agency and when I worked in a profesional photo lab, we did a lot of work for them. I haven't heard anything about them for years so not sure if they're still in business.

The bank was a Winter's branch. That mural has been there for decades, and still is pleasent to look at. The theater was the "Cinema X", if my memory serves me right. It showed X-rated movies. Neighbors didn't like having that right in the middle of the neighborhood. There were accounts of people performing sex acts outside of the theater. That crass activity got it shut down as a "nuisance" stucture/ business by the City Of Dayton, and it was demolished.

riverdale/driver/marck..thanks for all of the good information. its a total shame how the old theater met its fate. I can remember going there as a kid on saturday to watch the afternoon shows. i think it stood empty for several years before the xxx place took it over. i wish we could remember what the bar-b-q and rib house was called. thanks again.

driver62: thanks, I wondered what that stood for. still cant remember the name of the rib house that sat there for so many years. it and the Old Hickory on Brown St. were the two best known places of that type in Dayton. it was still there as late as 75 because I ate there while I was in town for a visit.

Marck1957: thanks for the memory jog, I remember the Winters bank now. I would have never guessed from looking at Google that the Mural had been there that long, sure is an improvement over the old white wall with a billboard hanging on it. also appreciate you solving the mystery of the disappearing theater.

dquartz: I agree that is a shame. I was never really in the theater that much but i well remember when it was a happy, thriving little neighborhood theater. I remember that it was somewhat cold and drafty in the winter though but as a kid I guess I never minded that so bad.

newsnot: I also dont remember that place, where was it ?

probably flipper. i cant really remember but the bingo type were illegal if you paid off on them and there was no use paying if they didnt pay because they wer really no fun otherwise. some places had them and only paid off if they knew you. i think by the time i was around there they were all flipper type though.

Riverdale Rat... the pawn shop on East Third used to be Dafler's Pharmacy.... the soda fountain was open right up to the time they closed.... but I'm thinking the pawn shop has been there pushing ten years already! Not sure about a Mister Donut at Smithville and Huffman, thinking there was a little place near there that did ice cream and snow cones in the late 50's, but not sure I remember donuts, been too long and we weren't allowed to cross Smithville when I was a kid.

I was thinking there was a Mr. Donut on the Eastside for some reason. maybe it was out around Airway. Thanks.

Riverdale.... I have a Westclox pocket watch... has a button that turns on a little tiny light bulb at the bottom of the face... has a little door on the back cover where the battery goes.... probably pushing 40 years old... think it was only $4-5.... Great-grandma's gold pocket watch with the amethyst fob and the original box is way the heck cooler ....

I;m getting in here late, but the movie theater was the Alahambra. Every kid in the neighborhood would spend their Saturdays or Sundays there.
The market at Linden was Midnight Market, and they stayed open 24 hours. The building on Davis housed Master Electric, and the empty lots on Davis were parking for ME and Hewitts. I had a lot of family who worked at Hewitts. The building on the corner was where Stoddards were made before it became Huffy. It now houses a few small companies.
When you went to Franklin or Holy Family, it was a special treat to go to Winnies for lunch. That's when schools had real lunch hours. The teachers ate at Pappy's leaving Winnie's for us. On party days, Winnie always sold pop at a reduced prices to classrooms. On the other side of Pappys was Carolines, which was strictly a candy store.
The two large brick houses on E Third are now rooming houses. The one at VanLear was an AA social club for years, but they moved 1/2 block down the street.
Smithville and Huffman was a drug store. We used to take the bus there to buy my grandma "Carters Little Liver Pills". We went to Dr. Spitler on Huffman and our treat if we were good was to go there for ice cream.
East End Drugs was at the corner of Third and Irwin, next to WW Macs. The BBQ place was Old Hickory.
Rat, when did you live in the area? I still live here.

smurfana: Not late at all, you answered a few key questions that some of us has been talking about. I remember the Alhambra name now and also the name Midnight Market (I would have never have remembered either name without hearing them again) also been trying to place the location of East End Drugs. The BBQ place was driving me crazy as well, one part of me was saying it was Old Hickory and another part was saying "No Stupid, there was only one Old Hickory and it was on Brown Street". I forgot all about Pappy's. did you know Winnie ? do you remember Mr. Hicks Marathon ? thanks for all of the questions that you answered, they have been driving me nut's.

Avondale
Greenwich Village
Tipp City
West Milton
Fairborn
Tate Road (discontinued in the 60s)
New Germany (feeder line between New Germany and Wright Patterson Air Force Base)
