I do. When I was little we would walk down there (I lived on Demphle at the time) and buy broken pretzels in bags that were .05 or .10 cents depending upon size.
As a side there is a small soft pretzel factory on Fletcher St. in Barney Plat. Fletcher runs off Patterson road close to the RR tracks before Woodman. Good and cheap! Weird hours.... I think they open at 10 am and close at 4:00.

The one on Xenia is Smales.... think Chuck Smales runs it now, and is like the 3rd or 4th generation, thinking they have been in business for 100 years this year!
There was another pretzel bakery on S. Clinton street up until the early 1970's, I think.

Here in East Tennessee, where there are NO pretzels worth consuming, no one here believes that Dayton could still have working pretzel bakeries! I heard from a usually "unreliable" source that the Flesher Ave. bakery (K and R) has closed, but as always, the usually unreliable source was wrong. I remember the children of (memory check..Kay and Robert?) when the infant boy couldn't yet walk. The kids and mom (R is deceased, I think) were running the bakery the last time I was in town. ---------- Mikey, Gatlinburg, TN

FYI for anyone in Belmont or Kettering, there is another pretzel shop over there. It is called K & R Pretzel bakery and on Flesher Ave. It is off Patterson Road close to Woodman near Dot's Market. Hank's Pub is on the corner of Flesher and Patterson. The bakery is in the first block on the right side. The hours are Tues - Sat. 10 to 4. I think they are 60 cents now. They are delicious.

I went to St. Mary's school on Xenia Ave in the 50's. There was a pretzel shop east of there called Stauble's I believe. We used to go there and get the bag of broken pretzels for .05 cents. Smales is west of there towards Wayne Ave. I used to Bowl with Chuck Smales. He retired but his brother still runs the place. You have to go early, they only stay open till about 1 o'clock.

JOE STAUBLERS PRETZLES WERE MADE IN A BULIDING BEHIND HIS HOUSE AT 633 XENIA AVE. THE HOUSE WAS JUST BEYOND HORN`S DRUGS AND RODERER SHOES. IT WAS ON A ALLEY RUNNING BETWEEN XENIA AND CHURCH ST. I LIVED THE FIRST 18 YEARS OF MY LIFE AT 535 XENIA AVE ON THE CORNER OF ALLEN ST. IN THE REAR OF A BUILDING THAT HOUSED ZIMMER`S DRY CLEANERS. BEN WESTBROCK LIVED NEXT DOOR. ST MARYS WAS JUST ACROSS THE STREET, AND THE FEDERATION THEATER WAS STRAIGHT OUT THE FRONT DOOR. NOT BEING CATHOLIC I STILL KNEW BECKMEYER WELL.q

We drove by that Flesher Ave. bakery (K and R) a few weeks ago. It was on a Sunday so it was probably closed but it looked like a going business from all indications. Some day soon we're gonna buy some pretzels there. I was kind of amazed at a place like that in that neighborhood.

Generally, the choice of going to Smalles or K and R depends on where I am and when I get the urge for a pretzel. ("Bet you can't eat just one!)
K and R on Flesher Ave. is opened later in the day -- closing at 4:00 on business days. They can look deserted at times, even when they are opened. More than once in the last few months, I have driven by, seen a "CLOSED" sign in the front door, even during regular hours. I don't know who forgot to change the sign, or if some kid had tampered with it, but they turned out actually being opened. Their store is currently opened 10 AM to 4 PM Tuesday to Friday. They are opened 11 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. They are closed Sunday and Monday.
If you get the soft-pretzel munchies earlier, then Smalles is the place to go. They open long before I get there most days. I think they open at 5:30 AM each business day. They close at 1 PM. They are opened Monday through Saturday, and keep the same hours each day.
At both stores, customers who show up at the last minute may be disapointed -- when they run out they run out, and don't make any more until the next business day. If you are getting much more than a dozen pretzels or so, both stores appreciate a call-ahead, especially if you will be picking up the order late in the business day.
Smalles has a more yeasty texture than K and R. K and R pretzels are a bit more uniform in size and shape.
K and R sell some prepackaged candy and popcorn products as well as their pretzels. Smalles sells several types of pretzels (all made in house) and also egg noodles, which are very good.
My favorite -- Both are good -- they just are different, and some people have a preference for one or the other. I just like being able to get a real pretzel that was in the oven minutes, or in the worst case, an hour or so before I buy it.

Donw, yes K&R is still a ongoing business. I live just up the street from it. Their hours are 10 to 4, Tues thru Sat. They also have bags of candy, some old time kinds that you don't see much anymore, cans of pop, bags of popcorn, hard sourdough pretzels, etc.

I don't think K & R sells these, but Smalles still does (you can spend a lot more for whole hard pretzels).
