My parents owned a bar called Ray & Dot's 1200 Bar in the 50's,60's and 70's.It was located at 1200 Brown St. They bought it from Sopie Battigalia. The building had the Anna Rue Apts. upstairs and in the back. They were just one room. The former Mayor of Dayton, Dave Hall, owned the building. We served alot of food to NCR and UD students and the locals.Dottie opened up at 5:30am and Ray closed it up at 2:30am.It was a family owed business and my siblilings Dottie Jr and Joe and I all worked there at some times in our lives either in the bar or kichen. My Aunt Geri cashed checks on Friday's and my grandmother helped cook and serve food. Our special was "Dotties Big Hamburgers". ( before Mcds'1/4 lb )and home cooked food served from a steam table.I washed many a pot and pan in my day!I used to go to South Park and play when I was a kid and they had a shelter house and you could play checkers, chess, tether ball, baseball, basketball, volleyball, they had a park leader who passed out the equipment.
When I was 17 my parents divorced and Dottie ran the bar and she bought a bar on Warren St called the Pub and a place on North main called the Islander. Then she got sick and died in the 70's.That was the end of my growing up in a bar.So many memories of all the people I met.

They built an Arbys next door to us. Moonlight Bar and the bowling alley were across the street. The park was behind Arbys where UD has a child care center now. There used to be a drug store where 2nd time around is and Illa Tays' beauty shop was across the street.Do you remember the old florist on Alberta St. We used to call it the flower dump because they would throw out old flowers and you could take what ever was any good for free.I have a old picture of Arbys during the construction. I have alot of old pictures of people who used to come in the bar.

bevy: your place must have been torn down before I started hanging out on Brown st. I used to live in that grey two story house right next door to the Shed. Arby's was already there and had been open for several weeks. I remember the roast beef sandwiches were larger than the ones you get today and they only cost 69 cents, milkshakes were 31 cents. I remember a greenhouse that butted right up against the playground area. we used to have a secret hideaway right behind it. spent a many an evening playing in that park/playground. I dont know where the 2nd time around is now but I well remember a drugstore across from my house and down on the corner. I used to buy all of my Baseball cards there. the druggist was a guy in his 30s with black hair and glasses, I think his dad owned the place. the first game I ever bowled was in that bowling alley. I will never forget the first ball I ever threw in my life was a strike (talk about a fluke) I had very few strikes after that. arbys was already open by a few weeks by my time. good memories, thanks for your post.

When Dotties' Bar was open in the 70's we used to get alot NCR workers. They would call in for a "set Up " at lunch at the same bar stool or booth everday. Alot of them wanted food , Dotties' Big hamburgers, or a dish called a "Hotshot". We also had a steam table full of home cooked food. Alot of those guys wanted a shot of whiskey with a beer chaser waiting on them when they came in the door. We also had alot of UD students. We used to have a jukebox that had a screen and showed gogo girls dance to the song that played , shuffle ball , bowling machine, and then I think some of the first games that ever came out and you could play on a screen with a hand held control, we had a recliner in the back room where some of the regulars could go sleep it off.One time we had the Schoenling Beer man come in and help tend bar. He wore that red jumpsuit and cape.We also had 10 cent draft beer nite, lots of barf bags on those nites. Moonlight was caddycorner across the steet, also a laundromat with two apts upstairs was next door to a house next to the Moonlight. At one time there was a Layer Electric next to that. Next to Dotties' Bar for alittle while was a Rent-a-tool. There used to be a place called Judy's Head Shop on Brown Street close to Woodland St. She had some nice jewlery among other things.

Yes, I do remember the Speakeasy. It was on the corner of Rubicon and Jasper I believe.I saw the Allen Brothers ,a blue grass band preform there once. I rented the apt. upstairs in the back for awhile. The drugstore ,can't remember the name, was right on the corner Brown and Fairgrounds in the 50's and 60's. then they closed it and in the early 70's somebody opened a place called, 2nd Time Around, Where you could go and sell or buy records, eight track tapes, cassette tapes , now cd's. What's it called now? They have expanded the store too. Do you remember Judy's Head Shop across the Street by Woodland and Brown St? It wasn't opened that long.

RR: I did not know the owners of the Shed. I don't remember there being very many houses, just alot of busineses. There used to be an Italian food place in that area and they had some twin girls. There were some double brick houses before you got to Wyoming St. I knew the Mrs. Johnson and her three sons. Illa Tays' Beauty Shop. The owner had a daughter named Linda ,I used to play with her when I was little. They lived on Woodland Ave. by Woodland Cemetary. Their old house is UD Housing now, In fact that whole area is housing for UD now. It seems like they have taken over just like MVH has taken over the other side of South Park.I used to rent an apt. on Ashley St. back in the 80's and that whole street is now gone. Oh well! That's progress!

bevy: I lived in probably the last residential house on the block. I remember Ila Tays but I had long since forgotten it until just now. I know the brick houses near wyoming, as a matter of fact I remember when there used to be a diner there on the southeast corner with apartments upstairs. there was a tool rental/utility trailer place across the street. for a while the owner had a live baby bear that he kept chained outside and we use to go by and feed him peanuts. I think the City finally made him get rid of it. I understand what you mean by streets being taken over, I went on Google street view the other day to see if the old Toddle House was still there at Wyoming and Main. Imagine my shock when I found out that the whole intersection no longer exists. I remember when the maternity ward at MVH was being built as an add on. dont you just love progress ?

Bevy and Dottie. We lived in the Apts above your Mom's place for a few months in the 60's when attending UD. We (6 guy's) moved to Chamber's Street. House is still there. We used to frequent Ray&Dots several times a week. Sometimes after he closed up, Ray would come over to our house for a "continued party" and sometimes he end up sleeping on the couch. There was a character called "Mush-a-Doo" he ate there every night and a had a Ray Burger, fies and an RC Cola - every night. Hey Dottie, remember when you dropped my dinner on the floor and what happened?? Lot of good memories.

I remember about 68-69 I went to a party upstairs in an apt near that Arby's. All I remember was we parked behind the house and went upstairs. I worked the afternoon to midnight shift for McCalls on the UD campus and ate a lot of dinners at that Frisches on the corner near NCR and after work we would go bowling down there. Also spent a lot of time at Timothys and getting vette worked on at Ray Bryant.
