Does anyone remember the Virginia cafeteria?.....and the address? I went there as a kid and then would go to Sears to shop.

I have several posts that have mentioned the Virginia and you are the first one to say or ask anything about it. I would endure the shopping trips with my Mom to Rike's and Beerman's just to get a chance to eat there. I always got the same thing. Roast Beef, mashed potatoes, green beans; a brand muffin and a custard cup. I got milk for my drink. I miss that place. I was fascinated by the guy slicing the roast beef. Good stuff. ----------

It was located on E. Third St., between Main and Jefferson, south side. ----------

If I'm not mistaken, I think Culps was in the Arcade right inside the Fourth Street entrance. It is now located at Carrillon Park as a Dayton History restaurant. Our Red Hat group ate there. Very good food and service.

Yes, Culps was in the arcade. My mother worked there in the early 40's as a teenager.

At the Virginia, the food was all laid out except for the prime rib. There was always someone there that would slice your order and pace it on a fresh platevfor you. I wlways loved eating there. ----------

Only cafeteria still around is the MCL. For us oldtimers it stands for the medicare lounge. Food doesn't compare to the old places, Westward Ho, Carillon, Saksteders and a half doz others. Great food and very reasonable prices.

My favorite was Kuntz's cafeteria on Troy St just south of Stanley Ave. I worked on Troy for many years and ate there often.

The only one I remember was in the Woolworth's on S. Main St. I used to go there on my way to Deerwester's Piano Studio for my lesson on Saturday. This was 1948-1954.

That is NOT what I am remembering about the one on 4th? between Main & Ludlow. I seem to remember a long cafeteria line (like in High School) where you went down and picked out your food then paid and someone would carry your trays to a table. Seems like it was carpeted and rather nice and quiet? NOT a loud lunch counter type place. Am I having a Senior Moment? I had my last date with my first true love there for lunch when we broke up. I worked around the corner at E F McDonald. Vivid if not fond memories HA ----------

@tlturbo. I believe you are correct. You pickedout your food and the tray was carried to a table for you. I remember the Virginia being just east of Beerman's., but I am probably wrong. It was a quiet place to eat and i always thought the food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. ----------

I use to eat at the Virginia Cafeteria with my sister Lou about every two weeks for over a year in 1966. I loved their roast beef hot shots, mash potatoes and peas.

tlturbo- I mentioned this to my brother, who is more familiar with downtown than I, and he suggested it might be Kuntz's Cafeteria. ----------

From this matchbook cover (from Dayton History Books), it appears that the Culp's in the arcade differed from the Culp's on W. Fourth St. ----------

Thanks - didn't realize they had that many locations within a few block of each other in downtown. ----------
