Just read that the new train station will be located at 6th and Ludlow. Don't have a construction or completion date yet. Anyone know?

The article said it will cost $7.00 for a trip to Cincinnati. Not bad, IMHO.

Aren't you gonna have to rent a car when you get there?

I think if I traveled to cincy by train, I would take a taxi to where ever I was going (shopping, dinner etc.). I recently took the Amtrak to Philly. It was not for business, it was a lot of fun. Amtrak is the way to travel if you are not in a big hurry and want to enjoy the scenery. They are very hospitable and comfortable. We had a great time.(Had to go to Cincy t the Union Station. That is a beautiful building!!

My train rides other than jumping in boxcars on moving trains from time to time and riding a block or two, did rarely was going from Richmond to Dallas, 1959, Dallas to Richmond same year. New Orleans to Dayton, 1963, Dayton to New Orleans, same year. Miami to New Orleans, 1968, Phoenix to New Orleans, New Orleans to Phoenix, around 1970 or so.

Trains are fun unless you are going somewhere that takes over a day and don't have a sleeper. The next morning after trying to sleep sitting up all night makes the day rather groggy and tiring. Never had a sleeper, never could afford one. I rode the City of New Orleans and played in the club car. Arlo Guthrie wrote a song about that train.

I was fortunate to ride the B&O from Dayton to Cincinnati in 1965 and then the L&N from Cincinnati to Memphis that same day. I was traveling with my mother for her father's (my grandfather) funeral. It was fun eating in the Club Car. Dad had to drive down separately when he was able to get off work a couple of days later.

My first train ride was in 1963 on the New York Central from Dayton to Cincinnati. We took the train, instead of the bus, to Cincinnati for a Reds game. The train was late and we missed part of the game but it was still fun.

In the late 60's and early 70's I rode trains in and out of Dayton several times. The last time was 1977 when I rode Amtrak's National Limited from Dayton to Harrisburg, PA. I was worried about that trip as I had been told the train was always late, dirty, crews were rude and the ride was very rough due to poor track.

Well, the night I rode, in April, 1977, the planets were aligned just right or something. The National Limited rolled in right on schedule and we arrived Harrisburg a few minutes early. The crew was very hospitable, my room in the sleeper was spotless and I enjoyed a great night's sleep.

I've ridden Amtrak trains since, from Toledo and Cleveland, to various places in the east. It's a hassle to get to and from where the train is, though. But, there's nothing like a train trip.

When I went to Ohio University from 1965 to 1969 I used to take the B&O from Athens to Dayton leaving in the late afternoon. The line from DC to to St. Louis stopped in Athens and Cincy. (Much of that line is now abandoned in Ohio.) At Cincy, there was a connecting train running to Detroit with a stop in Dayton around 9 pm. The journey back meant an early morning departure from Dayton Union Station. If it was late, the conductor would have me get off at a suburban Cincinnati station called Winton Place near P&G, to catch the eastbound train going to Athens and onto DC. If I didn't want to get up early Sunday morning to go back to Athens I could wait until late afternoon, but this meant getting a car ride to Blanchester (NE of Cincinnati) and flagging down the evening B&O going eastbound. I really miss train travel.

No train service today between Dayton and Cincinnati. Amtrak runs passenger service 3 or 4 days per week between Chicago and Norfolk/DC via Cincinnati (The Cardinal). It doesn't use the Cincinnati Union Terminal which is now a museum center. Amtrak has a small station somewhere near the riverfront west of downtown. BTW when I did travel by train into the old Cincinnati Union Terminal in the mornings during the late '60's I would see the most beautifully painted train cars ever. The Louisville & Nashville RR (L&N) had a train that started in Cincinnati and traveled south to New Orleans. It was named The Hummingbird and had a livery color scheme of dark blue and gold.

Oh well. The project would have required taking taxes out of the pockets of everyday Ohioans to finance it (taxes on entities like "Big Oil" only hurt the little guy, who pays the taxes in the form of higher prices for gasoline as well as higher costs for stuff like plastic containers for take-out which are ultimately passed on to the end consumer meaning you and me). That's why Kasich scotched the project. It would be a "nice-to-have", but ultimately you would pay for it. Maybe later, but right now Ohioans need every dime they can keep away from the tax-man just to keep body and soul together.

By thunder, would I ever love to take an Amtrak to Cincinnati and transfer to Dayton. But I'm not willing to pick your pocket to do it. Here's to more prosperous times, in the Miami Valley and throughout our beloved home state.
