I was in Greater Dayton Corvette Club from 67 to 71 when it was the biggest Corvette club in the US (really, it was). I raced on Feedwire and 35 from Linden up toward Smithville. Never the other way. Wasn't into custom cars even though I had an Egyptian paint job on my 69 vette. I have NO idea why I never hung out at the Hasty Tasty on Linden. Where was it?

Hasty Tasty was (and I believe still is) east on Linden from Smithville, about a third of the way down the hill toward Eastown on the Northern side of Linden.

So it was just West of the old Bargain Barn? Still don't remember it. Weird as I hung out at all the car places.

3509 Linden Ave. Check it out on Bing maps or Google street view. It's still there.

I would go to a speed shop that was across the street from the barrel factory in Beavercreek that burnt down. Think it was and Ault & James? There was also one on Kemp about a 1/2 mile West of Woodman next to the Throckmorton Hardware Store. Not sure of their name.

I remember Ault and James being on Airway Rd. I don't remember it being in Beavercreek. Frye's Auto Parts was across from the barrel factory. They sold a lot of performance parts and antique car parts.

Isn't it funny how selective our memories get. YES, Fry was the one across from the barrel factory. But for the life of me, although I know the name Ault & James quite well (and Brockmans) I can't place it on Airways. Where was it? I also took my first corvette to a guy who was across the street from the West side of the downtown main library.
I also knew Dick Vest (had a fuel car) and remember Dallas Lunsford with the oxblood red Chevelle across from Lofinos in Knowlwood? Call it Red Baron I believe and had a pic of Snoopy on it?

Terry, Ault and James was, it seems like, about a quarter to half mile west of Woodman on the south side.
I believe the tune-up shop you are referring to near the downtown library was Frank Johnson's on St. Clair.

supersix you are right on i knew jerry and his dad very well the did some engine work for us on a couple of our engines. i also rember dallas lunsford , we raced him almost every saturday at kil kare. i dont know if any rembers our car , it was called bam bam. it had a pic of bam bam on the sides. tom willis did the art work. and i would say he was one of if not the best strippers and artists.(old school) we took the car to the nationals in 1966 in a stock.we lasted through three rounds only to lose to a 421 1965 pontiac who won the nationals the year before. BOY THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!!

For some reason, I never raced at Kil Kare even though I graduated and lived in Beavercreek. I raced at Shelby up near Troy or Piqua (actually Lockington)and occasionally at Hamilton (Tri County??) Also once at National Trails in Columbus. I made it to the finals once at Shelby and had to race Stepps Hemi Challenger. Got the hole shot but about 1000 feet out that hemi blew me away. BUT I got $50 for each pass down the track so that was cool.
Avatar is current toy and way faster than back in the good old days.

Really stretching here but around 1968 there was a car shop on the S side of Springfield St somewhere near the Stockyards. About 1969 they moved out to the N side of Linden about a mile or 2 East of Smithville. Any ideas?

Dick Vest, Dale Reckner I remember and there also was a guy named George Chatterton. I know the first two mentioned are still alive but what about George? He had a wife named Dodie I believe and lived off of Waterviliet. Mind draws a blank on a few others but it was in 50's and 60's that they were busy building and racing. Bunnys Hasty Tasty is on Linden going east after passing Lees chicken and before Eastown. Supposedly still have good food.

I'm not far from Lofinos so once the weather gets nice might take a spin down that way and see whos driving what. Is there anyone to take over the racing scene and cruise ins once us old fogies have all gone over the rainbo?

Absolutely - just look at all the ricers driving around in Hondas with 500 hp worth of decals on their cars and 3 ft tall wings on the back. They already think they own the street so I'm sure they will take over. I stopped going to car shows and now only go to cruise-ins after my Grand National got beat for best car at a show by a VW Rabbit with purple neon lights under it????? That did it for me.

Ithink that old street rods are in good hands for now and there are some good reproductions, however the interest and money does not seem to be flowing in to the hobby. The younger people seem to like (go over show)and seem to prefer vidios over cruise ins.In the not to distant future there will be a flood of old school stuff comming out of hiding. It will be nice to see if there will be interest in keepin it up or will it rust away.qb8h4a

tlturbo, you may have lost to VW at the show but Jalopnik still thinks highly of the 87 GN. Check out the site for a huge wallpaper of a GN similar to yours. The stance is more than a little off but it's still a nice car.

Yep - but I agree. With the added lift of the airbags and/or springs, it NEEDS bigger tires on it. It looks kind of silly with those skinny tires on the back and it's no wonder he says it spins the tires into 2nd gear. 295 55 15 M/T drag radials solve that problem hee hee
