hunt69 That was a very good tribute to our troops. I also have grave concerns for our country. It almost seems hopeless, but the faith of our young people laying down their lives for our freedom, gives us a shot of optimism.

I'm visiting Vicksburg National Military Park on the Fourth, part of a Civil War road trip. It's the 150th anniversary of the day the Confederates surrendered there. I didn't really plan my trip to have that timing, but it's a different way to spend our Independence Day.

It's hoped everyone has been having a safe and happy Independence Day ... with deep thanks to those that have made it possible.

My family many years ago, maybe late 40's early 50's used to go to Old River and watch fireworks. It was so scarey for my little sister and me as you took your blankets and sat in grass and those displays were directly over your heads and the noise was horrific to little kids. Don't remember when they no longer did the displays. Then off of I75 at the small airfield in Miami Shores they used to have displays that we took our youngersters to. Also remember when there were dozens of drive ins and they would even have small displays which made it great or families as they got to see movies then fireworks. Does anyone else remember these events?

luv my dayton Around the same time, my parents took us to Lakeside Park for fire works. I think they also had them at Frankies' Forest Park, but don't remember going there.

We used to go to NCR's fireworks. We watched them from the car, didn't have access to Old River, only when a family friend invited us. I remember hearing stories about the fireworks burning holes in blankets of people watching them. Never heard about people being hurt though.

I remember one year at the Melody 49 Drive-In, where a chunk of firework "ash" landed on the hood of our car.
