I apologize in advance if there's already a discussion about this neighborhood! According to the 1940 census, a family member lived at 9 Riverview Avenue, which is right on the corner of North Main. I'm sure it was an apartment building, or maybe a boarding house, based on the number of other residents at this address. Does anyone have any pictures or other info about this building or the immediate neighborhood as it was in the 1930s and 1940s? I'm pretty sure it's been torn down. Also, I'm thinking she probably would have attended Steele High School?

cynthia, you are probably talking about East Riverview Avenue (formerly Lehman Street). If you click on the icon at the right of this page that says “Dayton Images/Videos” you will find an image. Click on “Dayton in the 1950s” and then scroll down to image #150 titled: “New Main Street Bridge 1957”.

You will see a set of what appears to be three adjoining apartment buildings beneath the “Black Label Beer” billboard. This was called the Bellvue Apartments and the portion to the far right was 9 E. Riverview Avenue. Bellevue was there until, I’m guessing, the late 1980s when torn down and replaced with a high-end restaurant and business building. I think the restaurant was called Four Seasons. I don’t know what the modern building is today.

When I worked the streets as a Dayton patrolman, I took calls in that old apartment building (usually domestic troubles).

It has been a while since I have been down there but not too long ago, there used to be a small strip of East Riverview Avenue remaining with an apartment building still standing. That building was the Miami Apartments and may still be there (you will have to check). It is a building somewhat similar to the old Bellevue building.

To get there travel north across the Main Street Bridge and turn right (east) onto Emmet Street. Travel east and then turn right (south) onto to Linwood Street. East Riverview Avenue (if still there) and the apartment building (if still there) should be straight ahead.

Hope that helps, cynthia.

I can't remember the apartment building on the west side of Main street at Riverview. Just the White Allen lot and Russ's Market further north but then I don't remember back in the 50s or earlier.

I agree Bellevue was regal looking. I am always saddened when something from my youth is torn down.

The house numbers for the east side of streets out that way are even numbers. If the house number for the building was 9, it would have to be the west side of the street if that was N. Main. Now, north-south sides I'm not so sure of, but I think the north side is the uneven numbers.

... unless, of course, you are on lower Salem Avenue in which case even is west. :-)

My apologies. I just woke up here a day late and about two dollars short....

The street is Riverview, not N. Main, on which the house number "9" would be near Third & Main, be that on the east or the west side of the street.

There would be a "9" area both east and west of Main on any street out that way be it on the north or the south side of the cross street. And, presumably the uneven numbers are on the north side of the streets.

And, yes, there was apartment house on the east side of Main on the north side of the river kind of right there by the bridge for a long time. As for the west side of the intersection, a thousand or more trips by there provides no recollection other than Russ's Market (on Main) and some grass and sometimes flowers on the riverbank by the bridge.
