Many years ago prior to Moms going off to work, many of us belonged to some sort of scout troop. Brownies, cub, girl scouts and many more. A few are left but not every child may join as theres been a shortage of mothers to run the things. I remember going and at 70 yrs old still have a craft I made when attending. So much fun and important things to learn that added to the family values. My granddaughter about 8 yrs ago wanted to join the scouts and when checking on it was told she would be placed on a waiting list and it would be awhile as not enough volunteers were available. Think maybe sports has replaced these groups but as for myself it was something to look forward to each week and somewhat more relaxing. Fun was had by us all.

I learned all of my outdoor skills from scouting. I went from Cub Scouts, to Boy Scouts, to Explorer Scouts. I made life, but while working on Eagle, I turned 18. Game Over. I later became an Asst. Scoutmaster when my son wanted to become a scout.

My now 33 year old son, made it to Eagle, served in the Army as a "Ranger", and is now a Firefighter-Paramedic.

Scouting is so important to kids and in general, people. It teaches you skills, reinforces your initiative, strengthens your self esteem, gives you a basis of who your are and your relationship to God. Whatever you do with it or how you apply it is up to the person, but it gives you someplace to start from. I did scouting.... Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorers and those were truly important to my development as a person.

I began my scouting experience in what is now called Riverside. And as we moved to Xenia, then to Wilmington, scouting moved with me. It was a constant, a reinforcement of life-lessons, and gave me experiences that help me in my career today. Cookie-selling was one of the most valuable tools. Going out at 10 years old, braving the Ohio January snows to take orders all over town (walking mind you, as back then parents didn't coddle their young like they do now) and then delivering all those orders in February taught me that hard work gets results! The reward was enjoyed in July when we'd go to Camp Whipoorwill for 5 days of hiking, swimming, smores and big fun!

I loved my time in troop 516. I've used the first aid skills learned in Scouts more than once.

Fond memories of snipe hunts at Cricket Holler.
