Does anybody remember the little racetrack out on RT 4 right in the area of Rainbow Lakes and the treatment plant? This had to of been in the 60's. It wasn't there too long. I was a young boy then but I'm sure it was there.

Yes I remember that SMALL track. It only lasted maybe a year and I don't know who ran there.

I attended many races at the Dayton Speedway with my Dad(who loved auto racing) in the 1950s. It was a very popular raceway in the Midwest. I don’t remember the associations it was connected with, but one of the very popular drivers there was “Troy Ruttman”, who went on to race at Indianapolis. My dad and some of his friends went to the “500” every year. I think I was too young to attend with them as they left on Thursday night and spent the whole weekend. I remember them constructing in our backyard, a very tall scaffold on the back of two pickup trucks they used to observe the race. Does anyone remember or attended any of the late model car races at Dayton Speedway? One of the “Hot” cars at the time was the “Hudson Hornet”. One thing that sticks in my mind, is the track speaker system playing “Mona Lisa” by Nat King Cole before the races. I was also there when one of the pit crews was killed in the pits when a driver lost control. Also, a driver was killed when he went over the fence in one of the turns. Many of the races were on a racing circuit and I believe one of the most popular was called “The Dayton 500”, a 500 lap race. It was a high-banked asphalt raceway, and you could hardly walk upright going down to the pits. I hope there is someone here who remembers or attended any of those races. One of the fond memories of Dayton and my childhood.

It was a go kart track. I went and raced on it a few times in about 62-63. It was between Rainbow lake and the highway.

historybuff I was just a kid back then but I lived on the corner Stewart and Cincinnati Sts. and across the street was a Sunoco station and they were contracted to take care of Dayton Speedway ambulance service and I was friends with his son and we would go to the races with him. The day they had the big accident where there were a few fans were killed and the driver. My friends dad took the driver to the hospital. But when he got there they took the body the morgue and the doctor came back out and said they didn't hsve the hesd. And I think the car belonged to Charlie Engle. He owned Engles bar on CincinnaT St.
