Hello,
Does anyone know anything about the big house with a stone wall surrounding it close to Webster St.?
My husband passed the house and stone wall everyday while walking to McGuffy school in the 1960's.

You mean the old Kennedy mansion? Called Duncarrick, I think.... it's still there... the Kroc Center (Salvation Army) has partially restored it.

I've heard my Mom talk about walking past that house on her way to school, McGuffy. I think the lady's name was Catherine Kennedy Brown. There were lots of black walnut trees on the property. Her step Mom would send her over there to get walnuts. Had to climb the fence or the wall to get in. I recall my Mom being scared to death about getting caught for what she thought was stealing. Which in essence, I guess it was.

My husband says big house is definately gone.
Replaced by a large buisness of sorts.
He was surprised by the change in the area.
Did they tear down McGuffy School as well?
Who exactly was Catherine Kennedy Brown?

She was active in Ohio politics for the republican party. Husband died shortly into the marriage and one child who also died. She never remarried and her career became her life. So many important people in Dayton and evidence is many manson's scattered throughout the city and surrounding cities.

Pretty sure the old house is still there. It sits just behind the Kroc center. Its been redone as well. You can see it from I-75 going north. For along time you couldnt see anything for the overgrowth that was surrounding the property. Looks much better now!

I work for the company that guards the Kroc Center and that old house is still there. I worked on that post for one night when another guard called in sick. I had to make rounds every hour through the property. I also had to walk through that house as well, very spooky late at night. The basement of that house has about a 5 1/2 foot ceiling height with a dirt floor. It gave me chills up my spine to walk around inside that old house. Don't let anyone tell you it's not still there, it is, just drive by there, you can't miss it. The main office of the Kroc Center is inside that house.

When I went to McGuffy we would climb up and sit on the wall. We NEVER wanted to fall inside because the story was that they had huge dogs in there. Scared us kids enough.

The occupants had 5 Doberman's chained to the servant quarters facing Leonhard just down from Webster. I delivered their morning paper, the Journal Herald 6 days a week for 1 year. I also attended McGuffey in 54-55 for 7th and 8th grade. I've cut across their yard many a time as delivering the morning paper in darkness was a bit spooky. I wanted to avoid the dogs and on the north side of the wall across from the Brown mansion was a break in the large concrete wall, I was 10 and went to Webster at the time. Born in the summer of 42,

Mrs. Wallace was my homeroom teacher, Mrs. Weber was our music teacher who would not allow the class to sing, "There is a Tavern in the Town", or "Little Brown Jug." Mr. James was our gym teacher and was also the Gym teacher when I attended Webster Elementary for grades 1 - 6.

Mrs. Weber also suckered me into going to her church one Sunday and tried again the next but I hid out and didn't go.

I attended 7th and 8th in what I believe was 55 and 56 and then moved from 62 Messina Place in McGuffey Homes to Grand Avenue in Dayton View and attended Colonel White for 9th grade. Reginald Welborn was my buddy at McGuffey and he had a brother whose name I forget. Reggies father was a Dayton city bus driver who also lived in McGuffey, Wanda Allison and Judy McFadden were early childhood girlfriends during that period and I hung out at Clairidge Park were a lady by the name of Stacy was the park director. I learned to play chess there by watching the men play.

I think that Mrs. Thomas was the principal who was going to paddle me one time when Mr. James thought I had made an inappropriate gesture which I had not and the paddling did not take place.

Remember the weekend air raid siren on top of Chrysler Airtemp, I lived about 2 blocks away and man was it loud.

I remember Mr.James ( I never could climb that rope)LOL. The name Judy McFadden sounds familiar? Played at Clairidge Park also. Mrs.Thomas was going to paddle me once for fighting (2 Brothers beat the crap out of ME!) Ah the good old days. Can't complain though. Made a good life in Michigan and in good health.

Mr. James did his job, he was probably X military as he really worked us hard with hand stands, jumping jacks and deep knee bends, he got us ready for the military for sure.

I grew up with strong legs, in the Eighties when some genius invented a good, skate wheel for outdoor I would skate Marathon's in California and Arizona and this was in my Forties. Today I still have strong legs but alas, my human mammal body is deteriorating right on Schedule with Mother Nature leading the way. Good bye body.

At Claridge I took part in a bike race, a meet for running at another park, playing chess and going to Phillips Aquatic Swimming pool. Rolling down the hill at the park in a barrel and taking part in a bike race. I also would climb on the roof after the park was closed and play around.

I went to Colonel White for the 9th grade then headed West, living in Dallas, Tucson, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Phoenix where I am today. My brothers name is Butch, well actually John but he was known in the family as Butch.
