Looking to see if anyone can tell me a little about the large, now yellow home, which faces Woodman Drive near the Air Force Museum that may have any history of it. Years ago it was the color pink and it may have been a funeral home at one time. The home now stands empty. I was just curious to know the history of it.

yvonne57 You are probably referring to the Harshman Mansion. The Harshman family were early Mad River Township pioneers. They came from Maryland and originally bought 40 acres of land. A small settlement in the area was called Harshmanville. Members of the family became involved in many business ventures and banking in the Dayton area. The mansion is adjacent to Huffman Prairie, where the Wright Brothers did early flying and ran a flying school. It later became Wilbur Wright Field and later WPAFB.

I don't think its quite empty..I rode my bike past there a couple of weeks ago and there was some activity. The grounds were being worked on and it looked like some roof repair was underway.

Yes, it is the old Harshman house. I've been inside of it several times, and have taken my now grown daughter there as well. And there are people who are there that are related to the Harshman family, last time I had heard, that bought the place and turned the house into effentioncy apartments. I am proud to say that I married into the family, and my daughter and her children are apart of this long legacy, and although I am not sure if there have ever been any big articles done on the pioneer's of the family, and their contributions to help make Dayton the city it is today, with their humble beginnings, (but if not I would be willing to help in researching it with them. )There is also a series of books written with my (now ex) husbands family in it in the Downtown Dayton library. I'm researching the family now for the past 25 years and proud to do so.

Sharon Harshman: One cannot delve into early Dayton History without running into the name ”Jonathan Harshman”; one of the early settlers and founder of Harshmanville. I think we still have a "Harshmanville Road” around WPAFB.
The Harshmans married into the Winters family and started the early commerce and banking efforts in the Dayton area. Several of the early Harshman and Winters family members are buried adjacent to each other at Woodland Cemetery. The recently deceased comedian, “Johnathan Winters”, was a descendent of that family. If you search this site for “Jonathan Harshman”, you will find many references to that families presence in the early Dayton area. Maybe you have encountered this in your Harshman family research.
