Wasn't there also in the plaza at Stroop and Far Hills one of these pizza places? This would have been decades ago and in the vincinity of where the barber shop is now. Actually would love for someone to go right around that area and recall all that may have been there in the 50s 60s. This may be a job for Olds88.

There is one of the original Cassano's still on Stroop just West of Wilmngton Pike. I went there a few years ago when in town.

As I recall, back in the 60s Cassanos was called "Vic and Moms,Pizza King". As a pre-teen, I frequently went to the Pizza King in the 2100 block of East Third St. They had a commissary at the rear of the store. They had a sign with the Pizza King and all the lettering in neon. Now I want a pizza.

Lmd The little center on the southwest corner had a Meyers Meats grocery in there. And now that you mention it I'm relativity sure there was a Cassanos right next to Meyers. I almost forgot until remembered ordering a pizza there. Could the music store have been Hauer Music?

joey_m, I believe Marion's originally housed a Lum's restaurant.
Other businesses include Malone's Camera, SS Kresge,
Throckmorton's toy store, a Chinese restaurant for which I cannot remember the name (Dragon something?),
Posy Office, Fernandez Art & Office....

Luv: Cassano's faced Far Hills and was in the Castle Hills Shopping Center between People's Drug Store (which was at the south end) and Meyer's Meats. During the 1960s-70s Cassano's was always packed with kids on Friday nights after the Fairmont West football games.

Joey completely forgot Meyers Meat mkt. Do remember going to Savinos as some of the places you mention were on the back side of Town and Country. Mark Pi was in the front of complex up on the mezzanine. Place you may be referring to where Marions now is may have been Howard Johnsons. Do know I used to get their hot dog and it wasn't on your usual dog bun but a square buttered and grilled bun. My mother worked for years at the JC Penny co. where Steinmart now is.

Luv and Joey,

The Marion's was indeed a Lum's which was famous for their hog dogs steamed in beer, as well as having frosted mugs of beer and a variety of sandwiches and onion rings. OK, I'm getting hungry!

Speaking of Meyers meat Mkt. they also had a location in Oakwood on Park Dr. across the street from Police station they were owned by Mike Meyer. We were friends back in the 70's. He has since passed away. Who remembers how every mom and pop grocery had it's own meat dept. Your butcher was your friend and you could get you meat cut to your own liking. Not many around anymore.

If I recall from memory Vic Cassano Sr's mother in law was named mom Donisis. She originally had the recipe for their sauce and they went into business together. Their corporate headquarters in on Stroop Rd but their original store was on Patterson Blvd across from Neils Heritage House. Used to deliver Vic Jr's newspaper back in the day..

I moved to Ft Myers, FL in Jan 72. Sometime in the late 70's I believe, a restaurant in N Ft Myers closed (one of those places that over the years is many different restaurants). Anyway, one day I saw a Cassano's Pizza sign going up. I was thrilled and when it opened, I ate there many times because it was right across the river from work. It only lasted a couple of years and I HEARD that dad Cassano let son open it and he couldn't make a go of it. It then was a seafood restaurant next. Only Cassano's outside the Dayton area I ever heard about.

About 20 or more years ago, I was driving in Missouri and as I drove into the town of Hannibal (home of Mark Twain), I came across a Cassano's. I was surprised and pleased. I had no idea it extend that far west. I was driving through Hannibal again last year and I figured it would be long gone but ... there it was! Still in operation.

I'm just a young guy around here, but I remember about two thirds of all the restaurants on that page! Thanks for the link.

Cassano's tried to break into the Columbus market in the late 80s when I first moved here. It did not work. Columbus is a very competitive market in that space.

There was a Vic & Mom's restaurant on Salem Ave, around the 47/4800 block. Right around the old Autobahn Volkswagen. I don't recall if it was strictly pizza or a mix of Italian food. It went out sometime in the late 70s and a revolving door of night clubs after that. Not sure if the actual building is still there or not.

Hi RichC,
The spam filter usually ends up taking out posts that include links, thinking that it may be redirecting someone to buy something. If a post disappears you can either do as you did and repeat it, or wait a day or so and I will go into the spam filter and allow what you have written to appear. Sorry that this happens. I have no control over it and there is no way to turn it off. The site host isn't the best, but after nearly ten years I really cannot even begin to think about moving it to somewhere else. Thanks for putting up with the glitch! Curt

Mark - If I remember the location correctly (across from the old K-Mart location), the building was still there but appeared to be empty. I drove pass there during my recent visit to the Dayton area.

The original Cassanos was on Schantz Ave. across from Neils restaurant. Vic originally ran a small grocery there on the corner. He added a pizza oven in the store and thus was the beginning of Cassanos Pizza. My dad was in charge of the city's public courses and his office was at Community golf Course. After he got of we would stop by Vic's place and get a pizza. Dad and Vic were friendsand they would always talk when we got there.

joey, was it originally in a different location (albeit very close)to the store I remember at the corner of Schantz and Patterson? I would describe that as 'across from Neil's' still, but I wonder if it was in the exact same space. My mother and stepfather still have the house there on Patterson Blvd. in Hills and Dales Park that they bought in 1982, and we always got Cassano's from that store, until it closed (in fact, I think it was still there for a good long time after I moved out of their house, but I don't know what year it was, exactly, that it closed).

blueJ,the original Vic&Moms was east of Neils on the north east corner. Not sure when they moved across the street however they were replaced by a gas station which was a every day happening back then. They were moved by 1957.We used to get beer there and smuggle it into Sugar camp for a price usually a beer.Life was pretty simple.

Thanks, olds88-

I think that location, the northeast corner, is now an automotive service center. I know right where you're talking about.

I had a feeling it was somewhere other than what I remembered. I envy all of you who have so many memories of Dayton in its prime. My earliest memories only go back to the mid-1970s.

Mmmm. Cassano's Pizza in a bag. My parents picked up pizzas from the store on the 2600 block of N. Main St. (circa 1960). What was left over from the evening was left out or stored in the cold oven. My fond memory is getting up the next morning and eating cold Cassano's Pizza to my heart's content. Health Department's nightmare, right? I never got sick.

Back in the 1960's I lived in Kettering. Vic Donisi and wife lived across the street from me. As kids we were introduced to the wonderful world of Italian conversation! But they were great neighbors and we loved their pizza! I have never been able to find a pizza that comes anywhere close to their pizzas! Fond memories!

There was nothing like taking a Cassano Pizza home in that bag and opening it up and have that pizza smell waft out at you. I wish they would go back to them. the boxes have no personality. They said they did it because you could spill the bags. That's a bunch of crap. I never spilled a pizza ! As a side note, Vic Cassano was one of the WING Disc Jockeys in the late 40s. I was told he was ther about a year, but quit to develop his Pizza Business with Mom Donisi, who I think was his Mother In Law.

Since my dad owned Kettering Village Inn, I wasn't allowed to eat at other restaurants very often ;) (sometimes my dad would give me money to go eat at one of the competitor's restaurants and report back to him!) After KVI closed though, I loved eating Cassano's pizza!

Isbair joey m here KVI's Pizza was way better. I know you know that but your dads receipe was very similar to my pizza and the reason was that the original receipe was started by a friend of your dads and mine. His name was Tony Di Pasquale. I used to deliver pizza crusts to your dads restaurant. And I would like to say it again your father was a very nice man!

The last time that I was in town (lived on Schantz Ave for many years before move to Gatlinburg) The original Cassano location is now an ambulance/emergency vehicle location. Mom Donisi's store was on the north side of Schantz Ave. After the small shopping center was built across the street, Cassano moved to it (south side.) The store was demolished in favor of a (Sohio?) station. The station was then retreaded into a privately owned emergency vehicle station. Don't know if that still exists. Haven't been by there for twenty years. The original store was in operation as early as 1954. We drove all the way from West Carrollton to get a small pizza. Never had one before. Should have gotten a larger one because everyone in the neighborhood got one bite.

Mikey you got it all correct and ambulance business is gone and it's now a car repair shop. My dad ran the city golf courses in the fifties and in the summer time he took me to work with him which was at Community Golf Course and many times we stopped there and pick up a large pizza for supper that night. I remember there was a friend of my dads who worked there and I always thought that he was Vic because my dad was a friend of Vics. But later I found out his name was Brownie. Great Memories!
