I know Halloween was discussed in another post, but I was just curious if they still have Beggar's Night on the 30th, and if not, anyone remember how long ago they stopped doing it?

It looks like every city has chosen its own time for beggars night. Most have settled on the 31st from 6-8. The schedules can be found by google searching. beggars night in dayton Ohio and it also lists events taking place. Seems like years ago it was on the 30th and have no idea when change took place. Even had it during daylight hours when people felt the need to do something hateful to children's candy.

Gee, I'm sorry I didn't get the word out, earlier, but here in York, Maine, we had beggar's night last night (Oct., 30). Our neighborhood is a rather (relatively) large one, and we had probably 125-150 or so kids come to our door. There were two police officers on bikes that patrolled the streets, as well as a police cruiser with flashing lights that made it's way, slowly, through the neighborhood. It's great having police-presence, minimizing any "troubles" that might have to be dealt with.

That's interesting, because down here in SW Florida, when I tell people about 'beggars' night' and when I was a kid it was on the 30th, they look at me like I'm crazy. I thought it was just an Ohio thing but JJ say they are doing it in Maine!

jack - There was a previous thread on this subject (probably last year?) that addressed other areas of the country that have Beggars Night. The Wikipedia article indicates that it is primarily an Ohio thing, but is also found in "many parts of Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and western New York". Obviously, based on JJC's post, this is not a complete list.

Like you, I got the same reaction in Central Florida, the first time I asked someone when they have Beggars Night here.

Just returned from Austin tx and they do the trick or treat thing including decorating outside. Believe one of the posters has a good memory as years ago it did include two days which the 31st was for the adults and kids was the 30th. In my neighborhood last night I didn't see nor hear any beggars out and about. According to stats halloween is the biggest money maker of all holidays.

Beggar's night was last night in Dayton. Not sure what the rest of the city was like. But in the East end where I live. I can count on both hands how many kids came to the door and still have fingers left over.

None of it is the same as it was! Not many 'beggars' are coming out anymore, at least down in here Florida.

A lot of parties for the kids now at churches and such.

BTW Happy Birthday hawks46! We are now on the 'month' counting scenario until Social Security!!

jack - My post isn't about Dayton history, but I went out Halloween night to the street party in downtown Orlando and had a great time. It wasn't for kids (although some people had kids with them), but I really enjoyed seeing some really imaginative costumes on the partygoers.

Not sure where you are located in "SW Florida" (or your age group based on the "1971" in your username), but if you still enjoy dressing up for Halloween, you may want to consider a visit to Orlando next year.

jack - I spent a night in Fort Myers and paid a visit to Sanibel Island in late-April. I enjoyed my birding experience at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, and had a nice dinner at Doc Fords Sanibel Bar & Grille. Looks like you live in a nice part of Florida.

Sorry everyone for getting off the Dayton history topic.
