Remember all the great pizza restaurants in the Dayton area... Xenia had IT pizza, Yellow Springs has (still has) HaHa pizza, Dayton had the great Flying Pizza.. I remember when Godfathers first appeared on the scene, what a great, greasy tasting pizza. Not to mention Cassano's & Marions. Even Pizza Hut was good way back then...

Don't forget Village Inn and Shakeys. Not that I remember them because I was a Cassano's person. But now I can't wait to get Marions when I go back - but their darn CASh ONLY policy really sucks. Haven't they discovered that most people don't carry a lot of cash for the past 15 years or so?

Whenever I'm in town and visit just about any handy Marions outlet, the cash only policy doesn't seem to be hurting business. The stores have seats for two hundred pizza eaters for a reason!

In Beavercreek in the late 70's and early 80's was Mr Gatti's. That was the best "Garbage Pizza" ever!!! Their crust was always perfect and their toppings were always fresh. Marions on North Dixie was always the place to go after playing softball for a great pizza and ice cold pitchers of beer afterwards.

The Flying Pizza gets my vote, followed by Marion's. Either one is a big treat for me!

Sams on Linden was the best. So what if you could not tell the black olives from the roaches, I would still eat it

I still love Cassano's ... they have gone back to their original taste, in my opinion. Mike80 ... we still have a Gatti's here in Somerset, Ky.!

I would definitely recommend Cassano's. I know they bottomed out when the family sold a few years back, but now that the Cassanos own the business again, they've returned it to its past excellence!!

I have lived in Florida for the last 30 years and have still not found a pizza that could even touch a Dayton pizza. I have even thought of opening my own place and showing these idiots what a real pizza taste like.

It's funny, but back in the early 80's there was a Cassano's in Cocoa Beach, i don't know how long it was there because it closed shortly after i moved there and it was made like the ones after they changed in Dayton

Write to Cassano's and ask if you can have a franchise for the expats.
What's in Florida, anyway?
(Being susceptible to infections, I'd be dead if I moved to Florida.)

I too grew up on Sam's pizza. Sam Donisi was Mom Donis's son and Vic Cassano was her son-in law. The Cassano quality went south after their expansion and Vic sold out to Greyhound (yes, the bus company. Greyhound also had the concession at Sinclair Colleges Cafeteria. I think the Cassanos bought it back and Jr. brought back the original quality.
To the best of my knowledge

I just read a while back that Vic Cassano Jr. passed away suddenly a few months ago. I hate to hear it. He really brought his father's business back.

I lived as a child a 5 minute walk to Sam's Pizza on Salem Ave. My dad would call up there and order his usual, walk up there, knew the help real well, walk home, open a can of beer and watch Ignatz Homerschlob on the late movie. What a night.

It seems like I've already posted this on another thread, but...
My favorite pizza place as a kid was Jolly's Pizza in Trotwood - for those Trotwood people who don't remember, it was on Broadway, across from the Trotwood Aquatic Club.
Through the following years, I liked places like Sam's and Cassano's (including Vic and Mom's Family Pub on Salem Ave.). I also enjoyed the old Godfather's pizza on North Main for awhile - they had an extremely thick stuffed pizza (an actual pizza "pie") that was difficult to finish off.
I eventually broke down, and adopted the corporate philosophy, and have been eating at Pizza Hut ever since (usually once a week). I get the same basic sausage and pepperoni pizza no matter where I end up in the U.S.
Whenever I return to the Dayton area to visit family and friends, I usually end up with a visit to Marion's in Englewood.

My eye doctor used to have his office a block or two from Dominic's, and we always tried to get morning appointments since he went to Dominic's for lunch every day and absolutely loved the garlic dressing.

In the 50's I ate my first pizza and it came from Vic Cassanos on Troy Street. Later my mom worked there and made the pizza dough. She worked there about 2 years. I loved those pizzas from Vic Cassanos.

In all my life, I've never, never tasted pizza like a Vic Cassano pizza that we bought in the 50's. Remember how they used to cut it in small squares. It was so easy to eat a piece in one bite. Of course you paid the penalty because the hot cheese would burn the roof of your mouth. Within the next day or two, the skin would peel from your mouth. The pizza was soooo good but the hurt was sooooo bad.
