I remember a roller skating rink downtown in the 60's.
I think it was by the main postal building but can't remember what street. Any help?

I don't know if this is the one you are talking about but when i worked at the Dayton Daily News (1973-1976), there was a roller skating rink across the street. It was on the second floor at 4th and Ludlow. I could see the kids skating from the sidewalk below.

Dan - There was a skating rink on Nottingham (just east of N. Main) and across from Forest Park and close to the Parkmoor which was at Main and Nottingham. It's been torn down and is now a church. Would this be the one you mentioned?

I used to go roller skating in Germantown. I still remember in 1969 when they landed on the moon and they had it on a little tv there.
I remember the disco ball and the moonlight dances with the couples going around. I tried to pick up a girl to skate the dance with me once - she said yes, then never came out of the bathroom when it was time for the moonlight dance. I was so stupid it took me awhile to figure it out...
For awhile there was a man there who played his heart out on the organ at the rink... Man, it sounded great as a kid, but in my head it now sounds kind of cheesy...

There was a rink somewhere in Huber Heights. I was never there but my friend, Henry Garcia, played the organ there.

The rink on nottingham was commonly called frankies, like the park. However thru the 70's it was Dayton Roller Drome. Broke my leg there in 1973. Dated there in the Late 70's, The line to get in on fri and sat night was ALWAYS quite long and the place was ALWAYS packed. I remember the Coat room lady(Mrs.Cloud) and the Floor guard who used to skate backwards with about 3 girls on each side.It was a sad day when I drove by seeing it being torn down. Curt mentioned moonlight, DRD had snowball, where the girls were on one side and boys on the other. One couple started out and then you switched after one lap Roge is correct about the 4th and ludlow rink name. The rink in huber is still there and now called Orbit, it changed owners a couple of times. Vandalia and Kettering skateworld are now owned by different people, but run business the Same. At age 50 I still skate once a week at 36 skate club in Piqua. Nothing like trying NOT to break your neck tripping over children who have no idea of which way to go or how to skate = alot of great times mike

I learned how to skate at the Dayton Roller Drome in the fifties. My best friend's mother taught classes there. Her name was Phyliss Jackson. She was a competition skater and bought me my first pair of precision skates.I never did master those skates but I sure did have fun!
If I remember correctly, they also called it Nagy's Roller Drome.

Hi Curt Dalton, yeah Mr. and Mrs. Briggs owned the Germantown Skating Rink and for quite a few years we went every Saturday afternoon along with lots of others from the area. Did you live in Germantown. We did, out on Weaver Road which ran north right at the top of the Hill on Route 4 as you left Germantown. I graduated from Germantown in 1959. Take care

Faith- Rollerworld/Bus Stop started out as a Ice/Roller Rink, but the owners soon found out that the two rinks housed in the same building didnt work out to well. Ice lasted a season or two then was changed to a dance/ disco hall. Building is still there and is the salvation army thrift store. The Roller floor is still there and so is the outline of the ice rink. Makes me want to bust out my skates every time I go bargin hunting there.

I use to skate at Heights Roller Arena back in the 60 & 70's. Betty and Jack ( brother and sister ) owned it. Marty was our organ player there. He left sometime in the late 70's. Did not know a Henry unless Marty was his nick name.

Hi Jersey, I am not sure that I am allowed to ask the names of your relatives from Germantown on this program at all; however, my brother and I grew up just outside of Germantown and graduated from Germantown, myself in 1959 and my brother in 1961. We lived on Weaver Road, where did your family live and if we are allowed to give names, what is your family name? Thanks.

Rich-they were a few years older than you. I'm not sure if we can give names either but if you check Ohio Association of Track and Cross County Coaches-their website has his picture. He won seven gold medals in state high school track meets-four in the 100 and three in the 220. My maternal grandparents lived off of Route 4 and my paternal grandparents lived on Sunset Place. I still have many relatives in Germantown. If you can know who he is, you might know his younger brother.

he and Roger's mother, Bess, eloped and got married. I don't remember what state. She was my first step-mother. They lived off of Little York I believe. Their house had a swimming pool in the backyard. I think she moved to Houston after their union ended. Hence the start of Roger's career years later.

Im not goin to say everyones names on here. Any who the skating rink that was Downtown on the Sec floor was called Disco Skateland. I know the guy that managed it he now owns and operates Skateworld in Vandalia. This is the truth he has a copy or flyer from Disco Skateland hangin in his office. The guy that owned Disco Skateland I think his name was Max Rogers he ran several rinks at one point in time. Skateworld of kettering, Romar Skating rink in Germantown and a few others He now operates and runs the one in Middletown and the one in trenton. I think max sold the one in trenton. Now onto huber heights roller rink or Heights Rollarena as it was known. Jim and Leslie unsure what there last name is took over ownship ran it till it closed in the late 90's. The rink was only open on Fri. nite Sat afternoon saturday nite and Sun afternoon. When it closed in the late 90's The rink stayed vacant till early 2000 when a family bought it and opened it back Up as Coaters Rollerskating Rink. it was only Open on the same sch. as Heights Rollarena. When coaters Closed Mike Pinrod Opened it in late 2000. He changed the name to Orbit Skate center. Now Beavervue skate rink had several owners before it closed. Alan Leonard took it over not sure of the year he changed the name to Fun World Skate Center. He held on to Fun world till in 2007 he Bought Skateworld of Kettering and the miniture Golf Course Indian Traiils miniture golf From the Original owners The Corsons in 2007. He held on to both rinks then a few years ago Alan Sold Fun World and they turned it into a Doctors or Dentist office. he moved his whole Operation to Kettering. He put in the contract that the Building can never be used as a Skating Rink Again. Skateworld of Vandalia was bought by the Mangager that ran it for years. and its still ran by Him today. Also some of you mite or mite not remember this. Skateworld of Xenia was open in the late 70's by the same Family that owned Skateworld of Kettering which opened up in early 70's 1974 I think was the year it opened and Skateworld of Vandalia which opened in 1976. Skateworld of Xenia closed and sold in the early 90's to a private school. I have some of the Flyers and sch that Xenia had. By the way Bus Stop Rollerworld The floor is there and The Bus that was Stickin out of the wall is still there today.

@DJ1 Thanks for updating us all on the the dayton area rinks, Piqua is still owned by Madalyn(cant recall last name but family owned for many years). Also fairborn is now owned by David Ripp who used to teach Art skating their. He has several awards for the sport. Max does own middletown but it is run by a lady named linda. The few times Ive been their she has done a great job. Tom and debbie(unknown last name) had owned coasters. They had good intentions however her husband had his job transfered to michigan, and couldn't keep up the rink. Alan Leonard is also a releative to the woman who owns greenville.

Rollerskating is a small world within its self and after about 18 yrs of being around it some areas can carry alot of drama. But mostly a great time had by all

Ozzie Kraft was the organist at Germantown and a guy named Dean ---- can't remember his last name was organist at the Chatauqua Rink. Later converted to a bowling alley.
Curt Dalton. Are you related to Gene Dalton and his older brother Jim Dalton who runs the Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown? Gene was an accomplished roller skater and as I recall won a Ohio State Championship way back when. Jim and I are good friends. He says he'll bury me before he goes. He is about 4 years older. Just an update

dfDesign,
Nope, no relation. I did go to the Germantown Middle School while living in Farmersville. And I went to the roller rink a few times as well in the late 60s early 1970s.

Ollie Green was the organist at Skateland, closeby Island Park. He was good enough that his performance was broadcast on WONE on Saturday evenings. I remember listening to his broadcast while decorating our Christmas tree. We still lived in Westwood then, so it was probably ca. 1953.

Since we're talking about organists, does anyone remember the name of the gal that played at the Beavercreek rink around 68-70. She was probably around 20?

I remember our church would take the youth to the rink next to Skyborn Drive-in in Fairborn. Can't remember the name of the rink, but do remember the youth peeking through the fence to catch glimpses of the X-rated movies at the Skyborn. I wonder if the rink is still open?

Hi DaytonDennis, as of 2010 the rink was still open. I used to go there too, we lived not far from there. I was totally surprised about the Skyborn Drive-in going X-rated, must have happened after I left Dayton in '72...I did take pictures of the Skyborn Drive-in sign that is still there, and one of the rink building with current skating hours. Now, 4 some years later it may be closed, but if so, it has only been recently.

Dayton Roller Drome was called Frankie's until the early 70's. It was owned by a nice lady named Margaret and ran by John Glenn who actually helped design some of Snyder Skate Company's skates/plates. I worked and speed skated there in the 80's. The roof trusses gave out and it was deemed to expensive to repair. We actually skated in there the week before they tore it down lol. The floor was so warped it was almost impossible. I have the large rules sign that hung just outside the front door. Good times there.

JDubb, good info about Frankie's roller Drome, do you or anyone remember the rink that was located very close to Island Park? I can't remember the name of the street that went along that way, with the band-shell on one side and the small lagoon on the other side of it, which froze in the winter and we skated on that outside...very cold, but fun. As a child,I lived in Dayton proper, on the West side and that rink was usually where I went to skate. Last time I was in Dayton, approx. 2010 the building was there..but was closed of course.

Believe your referring to Skateland which drew kids from all areas of town. My friends and I were from Kettering and parents would drop us off. Can still remember how crowded it was. So much fun. Also got to meet kids from other schools.

Always loved skating and when going with grandchildren have to talk myself out of it. Have never broken anything in my life and don't plan to now at my age 71. Last time I went was back in late 70's and fell backward and was lucky not to have been removed by EMT's. Figured that should end my skating days. Thanks driver for the location as could never remember the streets yet could still get there today. Odd how the mind works!
