I lived about 3 blocks from the Dabel whe I was growing up. You know what I remember about the Dabel, besides the huge screen - it seemed like every movie from 'How the West was Won' through 'The Sound
of Music' played for a year! Different world.

I remember many Saturday afternoons at the Dabel theater. In the 50's my older brothers and I would pay 10 cents to go to the matinee.
The movies were usually Francis the Talking Mule or Abbott & Costello meet the latest monster type of the day.
I still remember the jujubes(spelling) and how much I loved them. They would last for the whole movie.

My Fair Lady opening night at the Dabel was on my 16th birthday in 1964. I tried to get get tickets for that show but couldn't; so I got them for a week later which was my mom & dad's anniversary. My dad took me and my best friend and her boyfriend (none of us could drive). Had a brand new dress and my first pair of high heels. My mom had to stay home with my sister who was only a year old.

My grandparents took us to the DaBel to see "The Sound of Music." We lived in Greenville, so that was a really big deal. I still love that movie.

The Dayton Ski Club used to hold their annual 'Warren Miller' film fund raiser at the Dabel up until the time it closed and then we moved to the Convention Center. Now, we don't do it at all.

Hey Joeferrara -
Dayton Ski Club? When did you get involved with this group? I skied with members of a Ski Club back in Dayton in the early 70's. I had a boat and so did some of them. We skied a LOT at Triangle Park off of Keowee and made several trips to Lake Cumberland in KY. I remember a great New Years Party in Dec 71. Were you involved with them that far back? If I remember, there were a couple of brothers we skied with that skied in competitions. I think some of them snow skied also.

I joined the Dayton Ski Club in 1991. They're still going strong (annual kickoff picnic is on the 28th of this month). The name has recently been changed to Dayton Ski & Board Club,(http://www.daytonski.org) they've opened it up to snowboarders. There's still some people in it who were members as far back as the 70's.

I found this blog recently and am hooked on it. I grew up in east dayton and remember going to Dabel as a young child. I think I was in the third grade when they tore it down, so I do not remember a lot about it.I do remember the marquee and large velvet curtain covering the screen. I remember driving by with my mom and seeing it half leveled. Does anyone have pictures of the theatre? I have looked online and can't seem to find any.

I remember seeing "It's a Wild, Wild World" there in CinemaScope with Spencer Tracey finding the loot at the end...a classic!

David: I think I saw the same movie there when it first came out. Could it have been "It's A Mad Mad Mad World"? It had lots of big name stars in it. We sat in the first row, and it was really something to see on that huge screen!

It's a Mad Mad Mad World is one of the great comic classic's and enjoy it every time I see it. Saw a lot of great movies at the Dabel including American Graffiti, Rocky, A Christmas Story and the first Indiana Jones movie. Can't believe they tore it down to put up a drug store.

As a kid before the Cinerama era (mid to late 1950's), I loved the Saturday afternoon cartoon festivals at the Dabel. You had to take a 90 degree turn from the Smithville Rd. entrance to the viewing area. Always a nice sweep of plush carpet to walk on. About half way through the turn was a "pop" machine. Put in a nickel and down poured the pop - if the cup descended on time. Otherwise the pop went down the drain and you were left with nothing. I remember two great Cinerama features I saw at the Dabel - "How the West Was Won" and "It's Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." I never did get used to the two splits in the Cinerama projection screens. Great place, the Dabel.

My first time at the Dabel was in 1960 to see 'West Side Story". I actually own the desk from the managers office!! My neighbor moved out of our duplex back in October and he worked at the Dabel when they shut it down, and he managed to grab the desk. I was so happy when he offered it to me!! It's got all kinds of names, phone #s,etc carved in the top. When I delivered mail in the 70s I used to deliver theirs!! The manager then (can't remember his name) used to give me HUGE bags of popcorn!!!
rtb51--back in the 50s my uncle Herb Neef used to own the Snack Shoppe, and my Mom worked there part time.

Yes, the Sound of Music was seen there, but I believe that Around the World in 80 Days was shown there, too.
