Search Our Site

 Hints for searching:
Try spelling out business names.  NCR, for instance, was usually referred to as National Cash Register
Those looking for the VA Center, also known as the Soldiers' Home, should also try National Military Home, or National Home, or Disabled Volunteer or just Military Home.  Be sure to try Soldiers' Home with and without the apostrophe after the s in Soldiers.  This is especially helpful if you also try the "Find All words" and "Find Exact phrase" options in the search window. The search engine sometimes does not work as well as you would hope.  If you put in Soldiers' Home for instance, it will sometimes bring up every reference for Home on the site.  This is because any apostrophe after a word makes the search engine think you are looking for the words separately, in this case both Soldiers' and Home. This can be frustrating, and will only grow worse as the site becomes larger.  But, if you are patient and try other combinations of words, sometimes the rewards are worth the hassle.  If you do not find what you are searching for, please do come back, as we do add more to the site every week.

Your donations at work!  I have upgraded the Site Search search engine to allow you the option to highlight the words you are searching for to come up on the page you click on.  Now, it's tricky explaining it, but if you try it then it (hopefully) will be clearer to you.

The next time you search you will see the words “Hit Highlight” next to the page line you would normally click on. If you click “Hit Highlight” it will highlight the words from the search on the page you are going to.  To not have it highlight, then just click like you  normally would on the page you want to go to. For instance:

I ask the search engine to find the exact phrase “North Dayton”.  One of the choices is:

Annual Labor Review     •     highlight hits
http://www.daytonhistorybooks.com/page/page/4868512.htm

If I click on the left (Annual Labor Review) I will get the page without highlighting the search words.  If I click on the right (highlight hits) then the words “North Dayton” will be lit in yellow.  If I were to ask the search engine to look for the term North Dayton and not ask it to look for the exact phrase, it would highlight North in yellow and Dayton (the second search term) in blue.  The only problem is that it takes the page a little longer to load due to the search engine having to find each word you are looking for to highlight it.  A word like “Dayton” by itself especially takes a while as it appears so often on most pages.

Now - one problem is, while you have words in highlight, you cannot use the buttons along the side to navigate away from the page. They don't work while the search engine is in this mode.  The two choices are to either hit the back button and go back to the search engine, or look along the top of the page and you'll see something like this:

"This is PicoSearch's hit highlighting of http://www.daytonhistorybooks.com/page/page/4868512.htm"

If you click on the http link above the page it will take you to the page you are on, only now without highlights and also make the side buttons work again. It looks confusing, I know. But it will become clearer after you give it a try.
