Didn't got to the Cassano's at the Salem Mall, but the
locations on Smithville and across from Carroll H.S. on
Linden. The feature that made the Cassano's subs great was not the meat, cheese or even the quality of the bread - it was the toasting/grilling of the bread
through their fantastic pizza ovens.

Cassano's, always great, always hot and always sure to burn the roof of my mouth. I've been away from Dayton many years but I recall a Cassano's around 1952/3/4, out on Dixie Hwy, near the Carillion. I think that was their very first place.

Hey Bentz, glad you finally spelled "Cassano's" right. I was beginning to wonder if there was some kinda copycat outfit I nevr knew about.

icsalum - darn right about the hearth ovens, there will never be a conveyor belt oven that will make proper pizza. That requires the eye of a pizza cook and attention to timing. Fie on conveyor belts.

Remember when Cassano's would put the pizza in a paper bag on a cardboard disc for carryout? Way better than a big clunky box that wound up taking up too much table space. Of course you coulddn't stack two or three of them, but since it was cut in those squares it made sharing with a bunch of others easy. If you were at a table at Cassano's with a couplle others and a pal came along, why just pull up a chair and "Hey, grab a piece or two and get yerself a beer". Can't hardly do that with wedge slices.

Cassano's is the best in my opinion.

I used to also love a sandwich there but all I can remember was it was smothered in melted cheese and had yellow banana peppers on it. Maybe a chicken sandwich of some kind? Talking about 1967 or so.

Lora Cassano handles the King Points rewards program out of Kettering. I've had a recent conversation with her. I live out in Madison Twp., Butler County. The Cassanos near me are in Trenton, Middletown, and Springboro. Used to be one in Frankilin, not sure if it is still there or not, and one gone many years ago from the Towne Mall at the Middletown I-75 exit.

That is so funny, I just made those sub sandwiches today for my grandkids. Not with chicken, but mixed lunch meat, and the kids didn't want the banana peppers..how could you not want the banana peppers..

That's exactly it, Kelly- that's the sandwich I was talking about, too- with deli meats, rather than chicken. Maybe tlturbo was thinking of a different one that also happened to have melted cheese and banana peppers, but I thought it had to be the original sub. Mmmmm! Great stuff.

I lived near where the Fairfield Commons Mall is and I remember a Cassanos on Col Glenn down near the gate into Wright Field before you went down the hill to Page Manor. I also went to one in Knollwood just a little ways East of the Knollwood Pharmacy. Got lunch there a LOT when I worked for Data Corp.

tlturbo--I remember both those Cassanos, the one on Col Glenn was just about where the Dave Dennis dealership is now. There was also a Cassanos in the little shopping center at the corner of Grange Hall and Kemp. I think there was a Cassanos there twice, the most recent one only a few years ago.

Data Corp sponsored my little league baseball team back in 1968.

We used to go to the Cassano's on Linden right off Spinning ... same little strip as the old Bargain Barn.
